Train derails: fears for passengers
January 31, 2003

SEVERAL people are feared dead and dozens remain trapped following a train derailment in Sydney's far south this morning.

A Cityrail spokeswoman told NEWS.com.au the train was travelling southbound from Port Kembla to Central when the four carriages derailed.

The accident occurred 200m south of Waterfall somewhere between Helensburg station and Waterfall.

The train left Port Kembla at 6.24am and was due to arrive at Central at 8.17am, the spokeswoman said.

The NSW Ambulance service were unable to confirm casualties but media reports suggest several people may have been killed in the accident and dozens more remain trapped in the overturned carriages.

Emergency crews and a rescue helicopter are at the scene, which is believed to be inaccessible by road.

Hear on the radio just before that there sounds like there could be a few fatalities from this. :(

Awful news. Where it happened, where the railway line goes through the Royal National Park, there's no roads or access for emergency vehicles to get through. It took hours to get the survivors of the wreckage out.:(

If it was really attempting to travel southbound from Port Kembla to Central, it's no wonder it derailed.

Very sad indeed, gee we are having a run of terrible events lately, let's hope that no more bad things happen. :(

I saw the front of the train all smashed up, did it hit the mountain when it derailed?

Sad news. I was up in Sydney and was called in to work in Wollongong on Friday so I travelled down by train on Thursday night after considering but deciding against catching that train from Sydney on Friday morning.

According to a few people I've spoken to, the line is in a state of disrepair (particularly considering there's a viaduct with a crack in it). Hopefully, after this tragedy the NSW Govt. and State Rail will act and improve the line and passenger safety.

Sydney fan..... you have to be joking dont you... i hate people who say i was going to catch that train but decided at the last minute not too. give me a break

Hate whatever you want to hate.

I was just stating fact that I was in Sydney the night before though decided to head back to Wollongong that night instead of in the early morning and that would have been the train I caught. As it happened I was waiting for the very same train to take me from my local station here to Wollongong city when I first heard the announcement of a derailment from the station master.

It shook me up a bit to hear about the derailment since if circumstances were different I would have been on it. I feel strong condolences for the family and people affected by the derailment since I often travel to and from Sydney that way.

Did anybody see on the front of the Herald Sun today that one of the passengers tried to ring 000, but the operator thought it was a hoax call?.
