I recently travelled on the Melbourne train network to visit someone and as I was returning to Spencer St so I could return to Geelong I was noticing the amount of somewhat dodgy people on the stations and hopping on the train on the way back to Melbourne (It was fairly late).
So what stations do people feel unsafe at and are there any scary stories people have about travelling on trains at night or waiting at stations.

Sometimes for night games I park at Granville and get the train in from there. By the time I'm coming home, usually on the last train for the night or a Nightride bus if we've stopped off for late drinkies, it's very dodgy around there.

Midland Train Station! urghh! if you are a teenage girl by yourself at night at midland train station you are definately looking for trouble! Every time your there, there is about an 80% chance you'll be asked if you have a lighter  and most probably more than that....

Despite being in the middle of leafy suburbs, East Camberwell station is dodgy plus.

I know in the early 90s the Belgrave-Lilydale line was the most dangerous line in Melbourne. The most dangerous stations included Nunawading (no.1 in Melbourne for assault) and Laburnum (no.3 in Melbourne for assault). Guess which two stations Rusty had to travel between regularly to catch up with a good friend. Luckily nothing ever happened to me although there was some pretty brutal bashings and a rape at both stations.

I did see a skinhead get his arse handed back to him by an Asian guy at Box Hill station. Probably got what was coming to him I reckon. I copped a bit of a bashing there as a teenager and mates were mugged there as well.

Other bad ones -Spencer St (mates got mugged although the coppers caught them), Northcote (a bit isolated, always seems to be homeboy types there) and Collingwood (junkies shooting up in the waiting area).

Ah, the joys of catching public transport.

I have never had problems with trains...
I use the Werribee line and always feel safe. I have never been asked for a light or seen anyone even remotely dangerous. I use the Werribee and Hoppers Crossing stations. Pretty safe as far as I know!

Werribee and Hoppers safe???? you must be kidding.

I know of many people who have been randomly beaten and robbed for absolutley no reason, certainly a couple of the worst stations I know of

Sunshine (Scumshine) is a pretty dodgy station, basicall all stations in the Western Suburbs are a bit daunting even at the best time of day.

Two that I reguarly encounter - Yarraman and Ginifer. Yarraman is the one before Dandenong, and Ginifer is the one before St. Albans.

On the way back from a roadtrip with Mocca, Goalden Hawk, and Chris to Shepparton pre-season, my mother called telling me there was a murder at Yarraman the previous night. I was meant to be dropped off and walk home from there by Mocca. The night of the murder, I was at the station around an hour before the attack.

I use Yarraman at least six times a week, and often walk home alone at night.

Scary stuff.

I took a ride on a 19th Century steam engine train. It wasn't a real trip. It was an hour long 'there and back' scenic trip. Anyway, about half way in I had to take a leak real bad. I looked around the car I was in, and there was no place to go that I could see.

So I went out the back door between cars and stood on this metal balcony type thing. Leaned way out, almost fell off the train (yup, I'd been drinking heavily). There I am taking this big long Austin Powers type whiz. Skunky too because of the steamed asparagus I had with lunch.

When I came back in the car, I nearly ran over a guy coming out of a closet type space. That was the latrine. Funny how I hadn't noticed it before as it was now quite obvious.

When the ride ended we all stepped off and headed back for the depot. I heard some, "Oh my God" and a little "That is sooo gross." I turned to see what the spectacle was.

Well, on the car right behind the one I was riding in, there had been a paper banner/sign that used to say "Ride the Old West Express" or something like that. It was now crinkled up, blurred and soaking-dripping with my funky asparagus relief.

I walked over there and offered up a "People are so ****ing sick and disrespectful."

A few months later, I showered the walls at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Not long after that, Ozzy Osbourne was arrested there for doing the exact same thing. Ozzy - metal god - amateur public whizzer. Peace,

Mooster

i like catching the train better than driving for this reason, that u meet so many dodgies and get a bit of a laugh. Epping is one of the worst and the ones that go through Footscray. Saturday nite there were a few weirdos on smacked off their head trying to make conversation with me  but u get used to it after a while.

Go for a trip on the last train to Broadmeadows ,that's always good for some fun, tripping over the drunks & crackwhores & drug F***** morons.
East Camberwell ,scary you must be joking mAAAAAAAAnnnn:) :D

I was on the trains alot of the time when I was in Melbourne in Grand Final week.

At Richmond Station after the Grand Final, there was this p*ssed off his face middle-aged Brisbane fan with his wife. He was on his mobile obviously talking to someone back in QLD. He slurred out "Sh*t weather!!! WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO LIVE HERE?" then..."YEAH WE WON IT AGAIN!!! 2 IN A ROW! I said it loud becuse there is a d*ckhead Collingwood fan around me."

I wasn't very happy. He was very much adding fuel to the fire after an already heartbreaking afternoon. I stayed calm though. Then he came up to me and pushed the phone in my face.."HEY! TELL THEM HOW GOOD THE MATCH WAS. TELL THEM HOW SH*T IT IS TO BE A COLLINGWOOD FAN!" I nearly lost it and told him in no uncertain terms what I thought of him and that if he stirs me any more, there would be trouble. That was the end of it as his wife then told him off. (Pussy whipped pr*ck. :D)

As a matter of fact, the most disgusting thing I ever saw happened on a train last night. I'm still a little traumatised by it, but i might see fit to post what happened later on today:D

Werribee line's pretty dodgy late at night, I'd say the St.Albans line is safer and has less nuff nuffs. Seems that nuffs are the only people allowed on trains after 9pm. They're not scary or threatening, just as annoying as ****. At that time of night, all I wanna do is get home and get into the Beck's, not listen to some space cadet's friggen bull**** hard luck story.

Le Petit Train in noumea is pretty shoggin. The driver we had wasn't very good at gear-changing and we ended up with a bit of mild whiplash.

In Melbourne, I consider Glen Waverley to be fairly safe. Haven't had much contact with any other train stations.

It's design doesn't help much. Lots of narrow little walkways, heaps of bushes...it doesn't surprise me that its high up in the danger list.

I've had a few unpleasant experiences at Central Station in Sydney, at any time of the day there could be lowlifes, druggos and deadbeats causing troubles. It seems to have improved a bit over the last couple of years. Always feel a bit uneasy at Redfern Station and when I've been to Hurstville Station. Wollongong Station has a bit of a dodgy feel to it.

Up on the North Shore line, which is an affluent part of Sydney, people were concerned about the drug trades and violence up there but I never had any problems since the trades and violence were directed at rich school kids and the 'tough' guys up there were mostly cowards anyway.

Argh knew that station was scary it creeped me out last time when i got on the train there after a Box Hill game. It is pitch black, stinks as there r overflowing rubbish bins everywhere and its totally isolated. Thing i dont get is the train line much like the Belgrave bus is full of old hill billies so how can it be number 3 for assault?
