Jen, what type of role did he play? What were his possessions / decision-making like? Did he run and carry?
Seemed to be KPD and was OK, but he looked undersized compared to his opponent. He won't look as good against a decent forward line.

Does anyone know who the number 22 with long hair was in the first half? He obviously wasn't Sidebottom (though he was also later wearing his 22 jumper).

18 year old, Jos Landy from our vfl side.

Prob the Howe role. Some run and carry. Used the ball well, and intercepted.

Howe with a fresh calf injury according to Cleary
Geez, we’ll have virtually no tall defenders available for the start of the season.

Perhaps we’ll get away with it versus StKilda in our first match but not against the Crows in our second.

Moore would be back by round 1
But in terms of howe.. I think we will need to learn to play without him. Time to expose some youth.

Hurts to say but I’m all for prioritising the youth over Howe now. I just don’t trust that his body can cope with the demands of the game anymore. That calf won’t go away. He’ll need even longer now.

Reef has showed great signs, debut Cochran and see what he can do. No better time to start exposing these kids. Who knows, this injection of youth might rejuvenate us like we haven’t seen before. Wouldn’t the media hate seeing that after calling us old and slow.

To think we could see West, Harrison, Hayes, Reef, Cochran, Steene, Prindable etc play some senior games this year has me pretty excited.

Intraclub - Feb 13th.

Those that didn't participate or absent:

  • Pendles
  • Howe
  • Howes
  • Reef
  • Swadling
  • Nick (SOO)
  • Cameron (SOO)

VFL players:

In white:

  • Max Mahoney (#1)
  • Ned Byrne (#26)
  • Jos Landy (#22 )
  • Ben De Bolfo (#28)
  • Michael Lewis (#34)
  • Oskar Faulkhead (#5)
  • Teakle (good to see he is okay) #9
  • Woewodin (#45)
  • Hamish Collins (#38)
  • Xavier Laverty (#40)

There seemed to be lots of rotation of players.
Saxena played early, but didn't play the whole thing.
Houston I think only plated the last two quarters
Mcstay did the first quarter
Beau two quarters

Steene, without DC probably played the best I've seen him. Yes it was againt Teakle/Smit/Buller, but not like anyone else he could have gone up against. Can only play against who is available, and I think we should be pleased with how he is developing.
Dominant in the ruck. As he told me after the session, he likes to run and jump, so I think these new ruck rules are gonna benefit him greatly. He dropped back into defence like DC does and intercepted. Went forward and took some marks, kicked a goal also.

Anderson, I was pleasantly surprised by, he kinda had been flying under the radar during preseason, not really noticing him, but did come to light when we got into compeitive match sim. Performed pretty strongly for Team A.

Prindable performed well for the white team (before he went into the black late in the game) given Team B was being smashed, he could only do so much.He showed some good signs with his ball winning capability.

Lippa was excellent. Played a fair bit half forward, deliverying he ball inside 50 with precision. He was thrown on ball in the third term where he performed quite well in there as well.

Buller - who I constantly got him mixed up with VFL player, Michael Lewis... they look similar and for a time wore the same number lol But he was quite mobile and performed his role well. Played some ruck, and some forward, and some time in defence.

The breeze was a big factor, but Jamie with his experience, knew how to judge it and kick to the advantage of where the ball needed to be to go through.

Josh D spent most of the game through the middle, before playing some time in defence later in the piece. Was pretty dynamic. His parents were there to watch him, not too far from me.

Schultz also found himself some time in the middle in the last quarter, and didn't look out of place there either. I kept saying.. who is that #8 in the white in the midfield haha Perryman too spent the last Q in the middle.

Mcstay played for Team B. Didn't find too much of the footy, given the lack of delivery but took a couple nice marks up the field. He then did some rehab after the first term.

Allan provided some good run along the wing, and using his pace.

McCarthy played the whole three quarters, and showed some promising signs. Took some nice marks, and a couple shots at goal. His skills on show.

Ryan showed some nice moments in defence with some good intercept marking and dashing out of half back. Used the ball well from what I can recall.

Beau did a couple quarters and played a bit through the middle of the ground.

Hayes and Harrison swapped beween black and white, audtioning for that spot in opening round. Harrison I think is ahead from what I could see, starting in Team A.

Team A:

  • Steele
  • Harrison
  • Long
  • Jamie
  • Anderson
  • Allan
  • Steene
  • Lippa
  • Buller
  • Frampton
  • Crisp
  • Jordy
  • Schultz
  • Maynard
  • Sidey
  • Josh
  • IQ
  • Perryman
  • West
  • Houston
  • Parker

After the first term, it becomes a bit mixed.

Anyone know who the guy wearing 10 was. Kicked a few goals in 2nd and 3rd stanzas I think

Might have been Michael Lewis. I was getting him confused with Buller. lol

Ryan won’t be playing as a KPD, so a trial in that position really doesn’t impact his prospects.

The whites started with Cochran TJ Ryan and maybe one other as their tall defenders
Smit started the game in ruck but went to defence I think in 2nd and 3rd

Thanks - makes sense. He looked about his size
The indigenous boy Collins looked like he could be handy in the VFL. Nice mover
Ned Byrne also kicked 2 good goals in the breeze.
I was near the Mahoney parents and Harry, good people.

Crisp looked solid enough. Should still be in the best team most weeks. May even add some height to defence in early rounds
A surprise for me was how well Beau McCreery was looking and moving. Played first 25 min period and about 18 mins of second

A few great burst aways from centre clearances and a trademark long goal on run in first. Looks in as good a nick as I have seen him in terms of body shape

Going into the 2026 season with question marks over Howe - will his aging body stand up? - has uncomfortable echoes of the 2024 preseason when we weren’t sure about Murphy. And he didn’t make it.

I’m probably panicking a bit early, and our defence was excellent for most of last year, but geez we’re vulnerable.

From the footage I watched, 2026 'boom recruit', number 14 and 11, in the midfield he looked fantastic......As did number 7, In the middle too....Keeping my fingers and toes crossed on the health of 31, could be the final piece of the midfield puzzle!

Think it is obvious our draft strategy this year will be to go hard at key defenders .

Cant see howe playing more than 10-12 game. Think Moore will be managed at stages this year.

So really is a great prove it year for reef and Cochrane and a make or break year for Ryan.

I can see us having a slow start before kicking into high gear. It is very likely we will have fair few new faces lining up in week 1, it will take some time to gel on field.
