swoop is magnificent ...hes a fantastic source of info ,video etc ...
He won me over in his 23GF vlog when he started bawling his eyes out at he final siren and genuinely nearly fainted and his mates had to help him back to his feet. Genuine love and devotion to the Pies

Finally we got a report on training coming through. Fb Annabele again

Players were sighted yet again prior to the advertised starting time.

Conditions: - there was a raft of benign clouds sporadically covering the deep blue sky. - it was very warm before the players emerged, later becoming hot with a burgeoning wind which started to affect matchplay.

Who was missing? Hill and Cameron. Nick made a brief appearance late to shake off the cobwebs following the State of Origin match as he moved around bouncing the ball and lightly running

Points of interest ? - every player entered the arena wearing black today and it stayed that way until matchplay segments when they cleaved into a black and white attired arrangement - Nick making an appearance following Saturday night’s match

Rehab: it was quiet today - Howe appeared at the start of training and he undertook some fundamental skills with a trainer for a brief time. Moore moved there late in the session following participation in most of the drills and completed some high octane agility work around cones and lots of running, including sprints and longer distances at full pace - he looked in good shape today and has building up incrementally towards full integration into training - Reef who completed some matchplay today returned to his physio mentors to engage in some running and strategic movement drills to round off his session

How did the players warm up? Following the customary desultory kicking there were the routines using the resistance tape, short distance sprinting, running with objects above the heads, triangular running drill requiring rapid movement with players grouped in clusters

What else was on the menu? Multiple drills involving paired players with some orange and green vests - focus was invariably on close-in handball skills, evasion, agility, high marking and kicking over various distances. A rucking drill went for most of the station rotation activities with Steene, Frampton, Smit and McCarthy involved here. Eventually Stafford shed Zac and Bill and he worked intensively with the Smit and Steene - therein followed two matchplay segments - grid attack which is a quasi match sim and the skinny match sim taking place across the ground from wing to wing. - all of these various segments were punctuated by rehydrations breaks in order for the players to be refreshed during the oppressive conditions

Random observation of players:

Beau - completed all the drills and matchplay so rumours of his demise by the punditry early doors were exaggerated. In the skinny match sim he was weaving his way through players, using his pace to advantage and he hit the scoreboard. When he’s in the maelstrom of action he makes us look like a swifter team.

Swadling - returned to action today and was busy - still occasionally fumbles but has an appetite to run and carry the ball, showing a liking for bouncing and he seems to know where to run to receive.

Pendles - harbour some concerns about our defensive plans for him. Clearly his footy nous is an asset in organising stoppages deep in defence but today opponents left him in their wake on occasions. At one stage he was isolated with Jamie who took him on and powered into goal virtually with a smile on his face and he knew he had the brilliant evergreen vanquished. This aspect of defence will have to be strategically managed.

Howes - also returned to action today and took some emphatic grabs. He, Buller, West and McCarthy being added to the mix recently certainly provide some options for the future

Buller - continue to be impressed by his marking, running patterns and ability to mark

Harrison (we seem to have a lot of aitches) also never stops building on his impressive body of work over this summer. He is moving with celerity and appears to be more involved in play than prior to his injury.

Moore - entered the arena last but bounced out with high energy which was probably reflective of his growing confidence in his rehabilitation which was in turn reflected in his high work output today. Barring no further setbacks he should be ready for some matchplay next week. Today he completed the majority of the drills, lots of running comfortably, agility work, kicking practice over short distance and a high marking routine with a trainer.

Reef - was great to see him playing in the matchplay for the white team which should be a boon for his confidence. Surely all the extra running he has undertaken cannot harm his chances of improving his deficient tank.

Houston - was interesting to see him line up in the white team as the black and white clad during matchplay seemed to consist of the probables (black) against the possibles (white). His disposal was an immaculate joy despite his ‘demotion’ and he’s looking cherry ripe now after a slow build-up during this pre-season with regular journeys back and forth from rehab to mainstream until recently.

Schultz - a little ball of power who adds some muscle to the midfield when thrown in there. Shows possibilities in terms of adding to our rotations in this area but is peppering the scoreboard in a forward role.

Long - getting a lot of the ball, seems to be trusting his feet more and gleefully carried the ball and finished off with a medium range goal.

Roan - unobtrusive but highly effective whether in drills or matchplay - surely he’s a shoo-in for an early berth in the seniors

Allan - was happy with his workrate today playing for the white team which performed pretty well against the more fancied blacks. Also effected some deft moves to link with teammates.

Ryan - would have gained some confidence in the moment when he cornered Jamie who did everything possible to extricate himself from Jakob’s tackle, all to no avail. This followed encouraging signs on Friday night.

IQ - busy again and dynamic at times, he’s rebounded very well from his post-Christmas injury

McStay - took a few very strong grabs playing for the white team and shrugged off any concerns about a reported shoulder injury today

JDG - how refreshing that everything about him this summer has revolved around his continued rude health and competence on the ground. He’s looking fighting fit and he was a key figure in the black team.

*Note - the skinny match simulation consisted of three team - black, white and green

The quasi match sim just prior to this showcased the aforementioned white and black clad possibles and probables

Vibe of the session? Overall skills were pretty sharp and though not a long punishing outing, activities were executed at relatively high intensity, especially given the heat.

There's so much to like in this write-up but gee, Pendles is a real worry.

There's no doubt that Pendles' brain and foot-skills remain elite but his glacial slowness is a big liability and very difficult to hide. He can probably still play short bursts in the centre square, or maybe somewhere in the forward line but he could leak a lot of goals in defence. Opposition sides will certainly try to isolate him against faster, more agile opponents.

IMO Pendles should have already retired but now we're stuck trying to nurse him to Boomer Harvey's games played record. If he gets there, I hope he hangs up his superhero cape shortly thereafter.

+ 75% disposal efficiency and averaging 5.9 score involvements per game.

Doesn’t strike me as someone being nursed to a games record. Still brings heaps of value.

If he plays out the PF we win. It’s a ludicrous call to be doubting him as of mid Feb. If the Daicos’ can survive as HBF’s, they’re the worst cover defenders on our list, then Pendles will be fine. My only worry is the attrition of the season catching him out again come September.

yeah..... those stats are about what he does WITH the ball. I have never held any concerns about that. But I do have big concerns about Pendles being exposed to the team's detriment when his opponents get the ball.

Every coach in the league will try to isolate and expose him whenever we push him back into defence. Its the obvious thing to do.

I would have preferred to see the greatest Collingwood player of all time retire at the end of a season with all due fanfare and celebration, rather than being pushed out of the side part way through a season, which is now what I expect to happen.

This rarely happens. There are plenty of half backs in the AFL who can’t defend and they rarely get exposed like that.

Writing off one of the best players to play the game based off one pre season TRAINING report from a fan is something else. Perhaps wait for the real stuff to begin.

OK, in what position(s) would you play Pendles against Brisbane? Below was their midfield and forward players from the 2025 GF (with Levi Ashcroft on the interchange).

You maybe right. But Old players should never be judged early season. (No WHE references please). They typically take extra time to get into a season. As an on-field coach and mentor Pendles can offer a huge amount. The club and Pendles did not extend for token reasons.

Luke, Jen, Annabelle and other regular track watchers and reporters are the glue that binds us to the team during pre-season. I love their work. Places where they post and share could give more recognition of their effort, generosity and the time they put in, this drives traffic to these boards and keeps us all in the loop (pardon the pun).

I think i remember similar judgements in 2018, 2021 and early last year. Never write this bloke off while hes still on the list. Even if this is the last hurrah he deserves the record that's coming and i'm confident he'll play games this year that will make us wonder why why wrote him off prematurely. Again

I wouldn’t want to be a chicken on luckys farm. You could lay an egg 364days in a row but miss the 365th day and it’s the axe for you
