Opinion Travis Varcoe

Assuming Varcoe is worth pick 10 in any draft, would you trade him?

Some good discussion going on here. I'll admit, the contested ball stats surprised me.

However, for me, there is never a question about Varcoe's ability to do anything he likes on a football field, even winning a very hot contested football and dancing away with it. My issues is he picks and chooses when he does these things and that leaves us very frustrated as a supporter base.

I will accept this though if he goes back to kicking the bloody ball and not the stupid handballs that filtered into his play. SJ's 6 kick stat is a good one.

Anyhow he was pretty reasonable on Friday, so I will lay off him this week and hope he can improve again this week. I have ups and downs with Varcoe, I am not a hardliner against him. I will jump camps pretty quickly.

Can I ask you this?

Is Motlop more of an inside player than Varcoe?

Varcoe averages 13.31 disposals, 4.33 of those contested. And 3.56 tackles.
Motlop averages 15 disposals, 4.93 of those contested. And 2.02 tackles.

Pretty similar huh?
Better trade Motlop too.
Silly question, doesn't have to be this early in his AFL life as long as he preforms his primary role well and he is,think about this Motlop today would get you a first round pick,Varcoe couldn't find a home last year and nothings changed I'd suggest.

Is it actually true that Varcoe was on the trade table at the end of last year? I think I read somewhere he was never put on the market.

if you take the likes of jon ralph as gospel, then yes...so many rumours float about in trade week that one doesnt know what is true or not.

The answer will undoubtedly be split along party lines.:D

I'll say it freely - if Neil Balme or Steven Hocking or even Chris Scott say yes he was put up for trade I'll believe them. Not before. There are too many rumours in footy as it is, and I strongly suspect a good portion of them are pure fantasy. Journos are desperate for stories, and they can and do make stuff up. So I'll reserve judgement on that.

The main thing, which has been said, is that it was a much better game from him. More of that and there won't be any complaints.

And then there's this year.

14.33, 4.66, and 5 tackles
vs
16.33, 3.33, and 0.75 !

Admittedly there isn't enough data on Motlop this year.
Dammit! I hate it when stats break down like that, just when the story was getting interesting ;)
I think you'll find a similar pattern with more Motlop data. It'll be interesting to revisit here later this year.

Stringer has had stuff all games and opportunity compared to Varcoe and stood up well enough inside and out by comparison, didn't notice him put in the short ones like your bloke.
Disagree
His lack of opportunities are self inflicted

Varcoe in 11 was brilliant

To be honest, if 1/2 the list isn't on the table come trade time every year I think the club are idiots.
But the deal just has to be right.
i.e. Duncan is probably worth pick 12 and 30. Would anyone offer that? Doubt it. Would the Cats even take it? Doubt it.

So to question if someone was up or "there were no takers" is BS

I dont see why it's silly.
You go, or you dont. OR, it's not the role. Did Selwood go at 19?

You like many others refer to a couple of incidents in his career and now years later want to gift him games because he kicked a goal or tackled Buddy, the trouble with that my friend is you're patronising one player over a few possession acts over 8 years of football.

Like any on the list he should be judged according to his 2014 contributions to the team, to keep dragging up this blind support stuff of the past is the perfect example of media and herd mentality brainwash.
Fact is no team enquired for his services in the off season and he hasn't put his body on the line in years, and that's why no interest, obviously they're not interested in that sort of player in their teams.

We will not win a Premiership with a player looking for cheap kicks, I've seen them rather look for alternative options when Varcoe's on.
1. You don't know that.
2. You said that in 2011.

I'm pretty sure either Scott or Selwood were asked the question in an interview earlier this year and the responce was along the lines, yes and Trav has responded well and has moved on.

1.. Any more outside and he would have to pay to get back in to the ground.
2..It is if he's not being used. And why would the club try to flick him last year if he was doing what was asked of him?

dont agree with the 46 pages of bagging Trav. Yes he could do more and go harder but he is playing a role.
All that shit aside you pick one, that made me laugh really really hard. Well done.

Go Catters

For me there is one pressing question, which is quite distinct from Varcoe's ability to do what he likes, and that is whether there is indeed anything he would like to do.

Shame he couldn't kick like this at the end of the Prelim final last year...

Yea yea….but he wouldn't have done that if the bin hadn't moved into the correct position….and set it up for Varcoe.

Didn't see him dive into the bin to get the ball back either……….….soft!
