Although he's being marketed to trade by Carlton, Yarran is ahead of Varcoe on av disposal count 2013.
And you're so passionate about Varcoe?

But he isn't a player that will rack up huge numbers every game. Not all players are like this. Rioli, Garlett or Yarren don't rack up consistent high numbers week in week out so why should Varcoe?

When he's fit, you give him the ball like Motlop and he runs and breaks lines. That's how he damages you, not by 30+ possessions or contestant hard ball.

Right now, Motlop is the only one providing that since he is fit. If Varcoe can get up and running then we have 2 players that can break zone's and pressers.

You need to have a balance in the side. Some are hard contested and win the ball and flick it out and some are outside runners with good footskills to can hit a forward on the chest on the run.

But you've stated on many occasions that anything less than 15 touches a game is not good enough for players like Varcoe. So why would Yarran be a trade worth entertaining if he only averages 10.3 touches as opposed to Varcoe's 9.3?

You keep saying you want to talk facts (stats in your language). There they are.
 
Wouldn't look to trade him yet, but he'd want to start doing something soon. His defensive efforts are greatly exaggerated too, regardless of "tackle stats". He got thrown aside with ridiculous ease last week. Didn't even look like sticking a tackle yet on the sheet he had 6.

Talk of trading is premature, misguided even, but the leniency he is given by most is ridiculous.
 
No way would GFC trade Varcoe.

For sure his output is well below par right now and it is hard to argue for his inclusion on recent performances.

I think GFC are hoping he comes good as we need more pace in the side to win this year's flag. They are just hoping he comes good by playing him in the seniors. I hope they are right - but he just isn't getting the job done right now. More of a passenger than a player right now and that worries me with the finals so close.

The question we should be discussing is how do we get Varcoe back in form and keep winning matches. Does he need a few weeks in the twos or do we persist with him in the seniors - and if he plays badly risk losing matches - especially the Sydney and WC games ?

Really hard one for me to have a strong view on - but I just hate players playing poorly for games on end and still get a game in the seniors. Just does not sit well with me.

Yarran is an example, yes he's been patchy as well,.. but over the last 5 years getting a kick for an outside player would've been a heck of a lot easier at Geelong than at Carlton considering our dominance during that period and now with Mick things are different again.
I'm just thinking he might enjoy the ball movement at Geelong,.... because he can play!

For those that are saying no way with Varcoe!!!...then I suppose you roll the dice with him and just allow him more but it could be like shooting yourself in the foot for nothing, and big match payments to boot.

Personally I'd like us to size up in the midfield like Freo, Fyfe, Mayne, Barlow and Crowley, the smallest is Mayne at 188cms, that's where we need to go imo. Big Mids.

we have drafted a few of those types in recent years, Thurlow has the game to eventually become a utility and play midfield, still lean and a good 3 years away, Caddy will become a serious player next year or after....those two boys are around the 6ft'1 & 6ft'3 mark but Smedts is another who has recently been rotating through the middle at various stages and they have been doing so in the VFL as well. I suspect it's part of his development and at 190cm, that's another tall mid who could become a weapon when he adds another 5-8kg's in 3 years time.

Horlin-Smith, Murdoch & Guthrie have all played midfield at some time this season and they are over 6ft'1 in height but starting to bulk up considerably since joining the club.
 
I thought we were great rnd1 with Stokes, Mortlop, Bundy and Varcoe in the side. Worth keeping Varcoe because Stokes is coming to the twilight of his career.

That GHS is a tank in the making, I know we're not into the artificial stuff like the Bombers, but can you image his potential with some of Hirdy's gear, .... he's 186cm, perfect if they develop him as a heavy inside type a la Mitchell. Same goes for Caddy.

I agree, we started to stock a few around the 190cm a couple of drafts ago but most of them are still a bit to light imo, If you look at Barlow, Mayne and even Fyfe they just look that next step up, just thicker through the arms, chest and legs, then you throw in Crowley, they are intimidating compared to our guys.
That's probably why I don't like playing them.
Can see a future for Thurlow in midfield, the kids got all round talent, he's not just a minder. His possession stats as an U18 were massive, he's just out of juniors so how much should we expect atm.

not really, they aren't anything special though apart from Barlow and Fyfe.

You also have to remember that they have a fairly mature list, it's not as young as people think...Barlow 25, Crowley 29, Duffield 28, Griffin/Sandilands 27 & 31, Mayne 24, Pearce 27.
The younger blokes they got coming through that midfield are Fyfe 22, De Boer 23, Hill 23.

You compare it to our youngsters and there's Duncan 22, Caddy 20, Horlin-Smith 20, Hunt 22, Christensen 22, Stringer 22, Guthrie 21.
So give our guys another two more years and our midfield will be really starting to peak.

Just hope Wells picks a tallish mid this draft, someone to go with Duncan and Johnson.
Those Fremantle guys are 190cm and solid, big midfielders!

Who have terrible disposal efficiency. 56% kick for Fyfe if my memory serves me correct.

Look! without trying to be aggravating, I'd have to say in most cases yes!...mainly due to he's not getting them on early enough, he's starting from to far away, and most of the time they don't even effect the kick but that's just my observation. From the congested ball situations I'm saying.

Other than that I think at times there's initial hesitation, stats on their effectiveness would tend to support a theory like this I believe, since he's supposed to force turnovers
I don't pretend to be an expert on all things, that's just my guess through observation.
