According to AFL.com....

"Varcoe on the go?
West Coast has shown interest in Geelong speedster Travis Varcoe.

The three-time premiership Cat is contracted for next season, but the Herald Sun reports Geelong is prepared to trade if the right deal comes along.

There was some speculation Varcoe had been discussed between Melbourne and Geelong officials in the construction of the Mitch Clark trade, but AFL.com.au understands that is not the case.

Varcoe finished 14th in Geelong's best and fairest, which was held last Thursday nigh"

For a club that is crying out for a guy who can play the small, pressure, speedster forward role, surely we should be having a look at him? 3 time Premiership player, 14th this year in their B&F, can be a legit midfield rotation, 26 years old so should be at the peak of his powers - seems like a good fit for us i would have thought - would much rather we make a play and give up a little to acquire him, than taking the cheap and nasty version with is Gartlett.

Thoughts? Seems obvious to me, so surprised to not see our name linked to him

Always rated Varcoe (even if some of the Cats fans seemingly don't) and is the right age for our list too. Would bring some much needs run and carry to our side.

What kind of price would he command both pick/player wise and from a salary perspective? Second rounder be enough?

i would think a 2nd rounder, or a player equal to that. Whatever will get them Clark i would think - we would have to convince Varcoe he wants to come to us then do a 3 way trade perhaps with the Dee's to make it happen

Surely he'd rather join us than Melbourne (unless he's looking for extra coin since he's already got a few premiership medals).

Matty Thomas/Hampson + Grigg to Melbourne.
Varcoe to us.
Clark to Geelong.

I can dream ;)

So far past his best it's not funny.

what, at 26?

You gotta be confident sometimes that getting a player to a new enviroment in a slightly different role might get them back to their best, otherwise you should never trade for anyone.

apparently a rounder rounder is where Geelong see his worth according to the board over there.

I dare say Varcoe's role at Geelong has changed a bit over the past year or 2. From what i can tell he has became less of a forward specialist and being moved more into a midfield role - as the cats have had a few younger guys take up those small forward roles. He hasn't really stepped up and embraced that bigger role - but that just might mean his best football is playing as small forward, used sparringly in the midfield - which is probably what we need.

If we got Varcoe, we would not want him playing as a midfielder - we need him to be a forward or flanker ( what we had in Matt White basically, but we let walk out the door ). His pace could be useful in the midfield at certain times and adds another weapon to that - but we would be recruiting him as a forward, where he played his best footy. What he would add to our midfield is just a bonus - but everyone knows we need more grunt in the middle, which Varcoe won't really bring us.

Varcoe is meh to me. Hardly gets the pill in gun cats teams. No for me.

averaged 15 possies a game and has a career average of a goal a game...hardly a stat that suggest her "barely gets the pill"

I'm not really sure if our supporters know what they want. One second they are whinging to the hills that we are not trying to be pro-active in trading to improve the side - then every player people put forward we all everyone thinks is not good enough to play for us? Guy had 3 flags to his name, averages 15 touches a game and quite literally plays the position that fills one of our top 3 needs. We are not going to get a big name player like a "Dangerfield", at least not this season.

I'd be more than happy to try and move on a some players like Grigg, Hampson, Thomas, Knights, Batchelor and replace them with Varcoe. Even if we traded a couple of those blokes ( ie Hampson & Thomas ), got only a early 3rd round pick ( ie Dee's pick 39 )- then trade our 2nd rounder for Varcoe.

Trim some fat and get a player we need @ the right age - and pretty much just downgrade our 2nd rounder 8 picks. Free up some cap space for next year's Free agents

ok - so are we going to go with Gartlett or just have another year with no small speedy forwards?

How are we going to fill that hole?

Garlett is infinitely better than this hack. Played a good grand final and has done nothing since.
you are off your **** if you think that.

Garlett lacks the discipline and maturity to ever be a great player. He has spent that past 5 years in a team full of players that has clearly shown a lack of respect to its club & coach - and this nitwit has been one of the worst players for that.

Varcoe has played for probably the most discipline team in the league for the past 7 years.

why the **** would we want to take a bloke like Gartlett who has proven he can't live up to the expectations expected of him, @ a club with extremely low expectations - as opposed to a guy that has made several grand final teams with the highest discipline team in the league?

Gartlett is Clayton Collard & Marty McGrath take 2. Bloke is, and always will be immature.

Sometimes you are recruiting more than just raw talent. Their character, experience & professionalism are probably more important qualities to a club like us, who are trying to raise our standard.

Interesting prospect but I'm not completely sold on Travis. Just a hunch about him, doesn't seem the kind of player we'd go after. I know he fits the mould of the player type we would chase, but just something about him that says. He could go either way, a bit too risky...(hope that makes sense?)

I haven't followed him that closely but 15 disposals a game is not that high in today's football. And good luck to him that he landed at geelong and got himself a few flags... but I don't think he would produce much on the field for us.
Rookie maybe?

Get what you mean & agree. We would need to get some insurance on that pick that we used to tradde for him. That's why i think we then would need to really be proactive and trade ourselves back into the early 3rd round by moving on multiple players from that list i made above, so that essentially we are just downgrading some picks and still giving ourselves some decent chances of getting some new talent through the draft. Just waiting for their contracts to expire is just paying them a senior wage to play at Coburg

Varcoe is pretty overrated and I'm not a huge fan, but we do need speed and he'd provide that.
But I'd rather stay away tbh.

Sounds like you're having a $1 each way ;-)

mate he is no chance of being in the rookie draft - lol

15p's in a team that flips the ball around a lot, isn't much to me. I watch a lot of footy and I think he is overrated.

Far our, surely we flip the ball around as much as Geelong?

Ok then how do we fill this hole. If we go into next season with the same side we got now, i doubt we play finals & i dare say DH gets the sack & gives us sweet **** all chance of getting anyone decent through free agency, except if we over pay big time - we need to at least try and fill those holes now, show that we are a team with relevance & make the bloody finals

Varcoe to me just seemed the best option available and we could probably get him on a reasonable deal. Despite his overrated-ness, he still just finished 14th in their B&F which means he is no schmuck. The did finish top 4

His skills now are pretty awful. We can do better by keeping the draft pick. Don't know why you rate him so highly.

I'm not sure if he falls in that special category where he is an average player in a very good team thus he is perceived to be a good player or what, but I'm not really keen on Varcoe...
