Trent Knobel you little beauty!

you have made your point. we will have to wait and see. in the meantime a little less robert and a little more silence please. :)
it is better than ottens, because knobel will take the bounce better and simmonds will take the forward position better. ottens couldnt do both positions at the same time.

Cheers Darth, this will be my last word on Otto, but you clearly didn't see many games at the Dome, when Richo or another tall was missing. Ottens took the hit outs and went straight to full forward. Man for all seasons. Unfortunately Frawley usually started his replacement follower at CHF rather than CHB and Ottens opponent ruckman usually drifted forward unchecked and created havoc.

Final word - I like Otto - beautifully balanced and athletic tall player, great mark and kick when fit and firing. I think he is a bit simple though - Disappointed with his lack of nouse around the ground and field kicking. If used mainly as a forward should suit Geelong down to the ground. If they had him in the prelim against Brisbane with 69 entries into forward 50 to 40 for Brisbane they would have won easily.

Also I think you lot liked him too as the time capsule showed most of you picked him for B & F this year (and some Brownlow I think).

I have moved on however - Looking forward to seeing Patto and Meyer live up to the faith invested in them and to seeing the Simmonds/Knobel double act. Would have preferred in an ideal world (where we weren't broke) a Simmonds/Ottens partnership though.

Will be following Ottens with interest at the Catters but will not be unhappy if it all falls apart for them.

SOTR silently logging off - Shhhh

lol. sorry, couldnt help but say that - with a name like that you were asking for it. ;) i pretty much agree with you, i would have liked otto to stay, but acquiring simmonds and knobel for as little as fiora and 1st pick in the psd AND meyer and pattison for ottens, i think we came out on top. it is a shame that we will never see ottens in the yellow and black again, but at least we are not going to suffer too greatly from his loss you would think.

Knobel a key in coach's plans
By Dan Oakes
The Age
December 15, 2004

Richmond coach Terry Wallace yesterday described new ruckman Trent Knobel as a pivotal figure in his two-step plan to rejuvenate the wallowing club.

The Tigers picked up the 202-centimetre former Saint in yesterday's pre-season draft to lift ruck stocks depleted by Brad Ottens' departure for Geelong.

The Tigers have already snared Fremantle ruckman/forward Troy Simmonds in the trade period and veteran Hawthorn defender Mark Graham in the national draft to counterbalance the promising youngsters recruited last month.

Wallace said that although he was engaged in building a team for the future, he could not ignore the fact that the Tigers' long-suffering fans needed something to lift their morale in the short-term after the team finished 16th last season.

"We wanted to be able to change the list immediately so that our supporter base had something to look forward to going into 2005, but also that gave senior players something to look forward to going into 2005," Wallace said.

"Players like Wayne Campbell and Greg Stafford and Matthew Richardson don't want to be hearing about five-year plans; they might not be around to see those things out. Trent fits into the immediate future, when you have a look at Mark Graham coming to the club, Troy Simmonds and now Trent, that's the immediate future, that we have got a different structure about the way we'll go about it straight from round one next year.

"But Trent also fits into our long-term plans, being 24 years of age . . . with Troy and Trent being in that position, we know that we've got two key big men that are going to be around for an extended period of time."

Knobel will form a new ruck trio with Simmonds and Stafford, who at 30 is coming towards the end of his career. Simmonds, who kicked 35 goals for the Dockers last season, also will be deployed as a forward.

"Any sort of competition is very healthy, but I see those guys being able to share the duties. Gone are the days where you had one bloke who just plays in the ruck, he plays out 120 minutes of football," Wallace said.

It looked until late last week as if Knobel would end up at Carlton after training with the Blues in the lead-up to the draft. Wallace said the Tigers had contacted the big man as soon as he announced he was leaving St Kilda, where he played 24 games last season, but it was unfair to invite Knobel to train at Punt Road unless the club was sure it could afford him.

Knobel was unhappy with the deal the Saints offered him and elected to try his luck elsewhere, but he said there were no hard feelings over the manner of his departure.

"I've made my decision to leave St Kilda for a lot of personal reasons. I knew there was always a good chance of finding a new home, but I always wanted to make my decision to leave St Kilda and I think it's definitely been the right decision," Knobel said. "I have no bitterness towards St Kilda. I had a great three years there but unfortunately, things didn't work out."

From the rookie draft, the Tigers picked up Will Thursfield, an athletic 191-centimetre key defender.

Ottens & Simmonds would have been ideal. However; Id much rather the Knoble & Simmonds parternship if we got to off load Fiora and pick up Meyer and Pattison.

Best possible outcome imo.

Good logic - I see you agree that it take two players to replace Ottens. I note that Simmo and Knobel will be receiving over $500k combined. About 100k more than Brad would have accepted. Finally if it takes two guys to replace Otto then we are effectively playing with one less player in the side so a young gun like Deledio or Tambling may theoretically miss out.

Not really. Simmonds and Knoble are not direct replacment for Ottens. Rather, we have replaced both Ottens and Stafford with Simmonds and Knoble (26 & 24 years of age repectivly i beleive) not to mention picking up a few kids in the process.

Just wondering who people think will play number one ruck?

Next year will be a bit cluster********ish situation with the ruck if none of the talls have injuries, but Staff should retire at the end of next year.

Knobel will probably ruck off the bench.

Depends on whether Simmonds wants to start a game in the ruck or move into it later on in a game.

Id say Knoble would start no. 1 ruck thus having a forward line set up something similar to;

Brown Richardson Simmonds
Campbell Stafford Krak.

Everyone seems to be forgetting though that Simmonds left Freo because he wanted to play a lot more in the ruck.

As he stated in an article around the time he was traded, he considers himself a Ruckmen/Forward rather than a Forward/Ruckmen!

Unless Simmonds chagnes his mind somewhat, i think we'll see Knobel and Simmonds sharing ruck duties almost equally, maybe a bit more time to Knobel.

Stafford will go in there from time to time.

The writing is on the wall for Hall ain't it!!

What annoys me is didn't the swans offer a 20'ish draft pick for Hall a couple of years ago and we said no?

Weaver, reckon Wallace will give Knobel a go camping at FF sometime next season?

I know his stats suggest this is barren land for him, but i remember him taking a couple of strong packs marks sometime through the season.

I imagine we will try EVERYTHING next season. It is not as though we are going to be cruising to 16 wins with a settled 22.

Wasn't overly keen on getting Knobel, but at least it will mean some decent competition for ruck spots between Simmonds, Stafford and Knobel. In the past Ottens and Stafford have been able to cruise no there is no one to replace them in the side.

Wouldn't expect to see him ruck until at least 2006-2007.

He will play as a Forward/Ruck in about 5 years if his good enough.

Patto is 19 i beleive.

5 years? 24? Thats what Knoble is now.

Id Hope Pato can be a KKP/ruck at 21/22

Schultz has been KKP at only 19 for us.

lol!
too right :D

i reckon Knobel will be the starting ruckman more often than not, but hey the good thing is we have options there now and competition for places

thats why schulz has such huge wraps on him. it is unusual for a kp player who is so young to show such promising signs. i hope patto is the same but wont be expecting it.
