Triple J have just announced that over the next month they will be conducting a Hottest 100 of Aussie songs, voting has just opened and the countdown will take place on July 26 starting at 10am.

We're counting down the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs - here's everything you need to know

Importnat dates:
triple j's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs
  • Voting opens: Tuesday 17 June, 8am AEST
  • Voting closes: Thursday 17 July, 5pm AEST
  • Hottest 100 countdown day: Saturday 26 July from 10am AEST

I haven't voted in the regular Hottest 100 for 10-15 years at least, I don't find modern music as exciting as music of the past, but this version is one I can get behind, so I have already put in my votes.

Olympia's Smoke Signals is a bit of an outlier, it's only song on my list that was released after 1993.

Also, as much as I like my list, I feel I left 40-50 great songs (at least) off the list.

The dilemma of whether to only vote from the shortlist or to go with written in favourites.
I'm not sure 1 month is long enough for me to get a proper shortlist done.

I usually vote twice anyway so maybe I will do a best 10 from the shortlist and then a best 10 overall written in.

Smoke Signals is a stellar choice and a good chance of being in my top 10

One of the best Psychedelic Pop songs of the past 50-55 years

That's a pretty good idea, shame I didn't think of it, my list is a mixture.

I think I'll have to do another list as well.

I'm sure I'm not the only old man yelling at clouds unhappy with the voting options, but here goes:

It's a bit annoying (for me) that I can't easily vote for a band like Screamfeeder, who have been out busting a gut for three decades, but I can vote for Strawberry Kisses by Nicki Webster or What About Me by Shannon Noll.

Here endeth the rant.

Excited for this, could be very controversial with the split of votes, probably won’t do a prediction for this one just sit back and watch it all unfold

My Happiness is my fav and pick to win it all, but it could be one of hundreds in close proximity to each other

Don't really think you can predict something like this with a straight face tbh. Too hard.

Sportsbet have Powderfinger as their favourite, so you probably aren't too far off. Rufus, Tame Impala, The Veronicas, AC/DC, Gotye, Flume, INXS, Jimmy Barnes and Hilltop Hoods round out the top 10 in the betting.

those are basically all the ones I expect to be in the top 10 or so anyway alongside Violent Soho.

cant wait for a bbq and some beers whilst its on, hope the weather gods give us a nice day for it.

It depends if there's a large number of older JJJ listeners who vote.

If they do then it will be a Silverchair/Powderfinger winner you would think. Although when they did the H100 of all time, Hilltop beat both of them (I don't know how).

And again in the last 20 years one. Weird.

I'm no Powderfinger fan but Hilltop.. yikes.

I feel like alot of the older listeners will vote in this one as it'll be their chance to hear their favs on jjj which lets face it, isnt a very common occurrence these days.

Hilltop has appeal to some of the younger crowd too, I agree though, would be rough them winning :tearsofjoy:

That's what double J is for.

Lots of old stuff played on there daily. Zan even brought back Tool Tuesday :D

They're capping the shortlist at 3 tracks for every artist, given its an all time countdown. Not unreasonable.
And I would suggest this will lead to far more write-in votes than the usual hottest 100. I think I will vote for the first time in a few years, it's certainly got me thinking. I will probably try and think of my 10 favourite Aussie artists and pick one from each.

Had to laugh when listening to triple j this morning and people nominating Untouched by the Veronicas, Torn by Natalie Imbruglia and other songs that tripl j would not have touched at the time. A sign that pop is in ascendance at the moment.

The voting list has definitely thrown "what triple j would normally play" out of the window. It's absolutely a free for all on Aus music.

The voting demographic of this is the most interesting thing for me. For example, would I really be surprised if Spacey Jane ends up in the top 10?
I suspect not, but as you say, it will be interesting. I think a lot of 90s listeners will come out of the woodworks, there will be some love for 80s classics that have stood the test of time. I think the opposite of recency bias will kick in, i.e. 'can a song that is only a couple of years old be better than ones that have been popular for decades'.

Reckon Tame Impala, Rufus du Sol, Gang of Youths and Gotye will be the most recent to threaten the top 10.

I'm interested to see where songs that topped the poll in their years come, like No Aphrodisiac, Buy Me a Pony, Big Jet Plane.

I tend to agree that the opposite of recency bias should kick in for the majority. Especially when you get down to a very recent song versus an all time classic, I'd imagine the deciding factor for most would be "well this one has already stood the test of time." I only specifically mentioned Spacey Jane as that fanbase has a history of blindly pushing some very ordinary songs into higher spots than they deserved, so I imagine Booster Seat will get a fair push.

Only other recent one I can really see threatening that isn't on your list is Flume.
