Triple J's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs

The rules are that only songs released post 1975 - i.e. the 50th anniversary of 2JJ - are eligible. Otherwise, The Easybeats, The Seekers and Master's Apprentices would also be glaring omissions.
I thought that was the case as well when considering including The Easybeats and The Bee Gees on my shortlist, but the eligibility line states:
An eligible song must have had its initial release (online or on-air) before triple j's 50th birthday, on January 19th 2025.

Not anything about after 1975.

And The Loved Ones songs from 1966 and 1967 are on the Voting List.
So I had just assumed that they weren't considering The Easybeats and Bee Gees as Australian enough.

I think you’re correct. from any era as long as it was prior to Jan 2025 that just happened to be the 50th anniversary

could’ve sworn Eagle Rock was on there as well, might be misremembering

Yeah, just re-checked the rules and you're right. Not sure where I got the 50 years from?

anyone reckon some local yearly #1s will miss the cut?

Hoops looks the most vulnerable, only #46 in the 2010s decade countdown a few years back

then you have Wish You Well (Fanning) & Say Nothing (Flume) having to compete with other #1s more likely from those artists, although recency will help the latter. I think the rest for various reasons will scrape enough votes to have a shot. Buy Me a Pony might be vulnerable, as it didn’t make the 2009 all-time and there are more subsequent Spiderbait singles to compete with now compared to 1996 (depends how many or few got shortlisted). A lot of the others are still relatively defining tunes for those artists in the main.

that’s all without a glance at how they all fare on modern streaming

Damn, forgot about that song.

Hoops won't make it on my shortlist.

I know I'm in the minority, but I was never a fan of Powderfinger/Bernard Fanning, so I won't be nominating any of their songs.

Eagle Rock is on there. I shortlisted it for myself.

Former number 1s that are on the voting list (sorry Wiggles, no LAVs)

1996 - Spiderbait - Buy Me A Pony
1997 - The Whitlams - No Aphrodisiac
1999 - Powderfinger - These Days
2000 - Powderfinger - My Happiness
2001 - Alex Lloyd - Amazing
2003 - Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
2005 - Bernard Fanning - Wish You Well
2006 - Augie March - One Crowded Hour
2010 - Angus & Julia Stone - Big Jet Plane
2011 - Gotye & Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know
2013 - Vance Joy - Riptide
2014 - Chet Faker - Talk Is Cheap
2015 - The Rubens - Hoops
2016 - Flume & Kai - Never Be Like You
2018 - Ocean Alley - Confidence
2022 - Flume & MAY-A - Say Nothing

As a bonus, Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better won the best of the 2010s countdown in 2020.

Given that's already 17 songs, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them missed.

I think of these, only the Powderfinger songs, Jet, Gotye, Vance Joy and Flume will feature.

Bolded are the songs I think deserve to be there, though I suspect Say Nothing will make an appearance. Likewise, I think One Crowded Hour may not, but that may be the best number one that a band was never able to really follow up on.

Geez, there's been some bog average number ones in the past 10 years.

Oh, and The Less I Know The Better I think will be top 10, and a chance for the win.

I tend to agree that Powderfinger x2, Flume x2, Gotye, Vance Joy, Tame Impala and Jet are probably the locks to be in the 100. I can definitely see a lot of the others being right around the 100 mark - no actual threat of winning, but could sneak in.

I don't think Jet will make the 100 but I think Angus & Julia Stone could.

I think Angus & Julia Stone could appear early in the day. They definitely fell in my fringe group.

Reckon you could absolutely lock Jet in. It was huge at the time, fell out of favour, and has had a resurgence.

yeah hasnt it had a massive blow up on Tiktok lately? I think it'll be in the 100-75 range myself.

Can't see Hoops making it myself, and think Alex Lloyd will struggle to as well.

I saw on X/Twitter that Warm Tunas isnt sure about doing a prediction for this countdown as he feels there's too much potential variance in votes and that its harder to collect data for the mid year countdowns.

I dont blame him, would be near impossible to do for one with such a wide array of eligible songs.

🎲
Not a bad effort considering how wide the field is for this.

Not sure Gflip and Troye Sivan will manage multiple entries though.

Also, even though they're big currently I don't think Royel Otis will make it.

Booster Seat up so high and surrounded by absolute classics is hilarious, but probably accurate. I say this as someone who actually quite likes that song too.

Can see Troye Sivan being like the Ruel of the 2010s decade countdown popular now, big fan base so if they vote could get all 3.

Hoping G Flip dosent go this well but her fans will probably vote for all 3 of her songs.

Only slipped in Royel Otis last second so who knows. Going to be super interesting on the day
