i didn’t vote but off the top of my head my top 10’d be something like (in no order)

1) new species - iglooghost
2) j/d/f - hammok
3) ashes - asian glow
4) 365 - charli xcx
5) frownland - chat pile
6) bussit- joey valence & brae
7) blackwater - bloom dream
8) flowerfields - samlrc
9) 주마등 (A Lot Can Happen) - parannoul
10) sleep hygiene - uboa

I'm not a country music fan, but they could've at least made Waxahatchee and Adrienne Lenker* eligible instead of this shit.

*More folk/Americana.
agree with adrienne lenker, bright future was such a devastatingly good album

I don't mind Royel Otis, but this isn't it. A very mediocre cover of a pop classic. Glad it didn't win. I'm gonna be honest, Good Luck Babe is one of the better winners in recent years. Yes, it's mainstream pop, but given the direction the station has gone, I'll take it.

I have not heard a single song in this year's hottest 100.

I have never felt so old in my life.

I'm not much of a pop fan but "Good Luck, Babe!" is a genuinely good song. She can actually sing. No whispering, no mumbling, no obvious autotune - she just belts it out. Best winner in recent memory.

The lack of Australian music however was diabolical. I think that was actually the lowest amount of Aussie music to ever appear in a H100.

agree with this

29 Australian songs is soooo bad.

That's a really strong sign that people aren't basing their tastes or their votes on what Triple J are playing.

if there was ever a clear sign that triple j is just another pop station, this countdown was it

it’s sad they’ve felt the need to gravitate in this direction since TikTok blew up in 2020 to stay relevant, in doing so they’ve completely gone against their mantra from the first 40+ years of their existence

Good Luck, Babe! is atleast way better than that Doja Cat shit that won last year, but yikes the countdown looks like a Nova/2DayFM 100 with a few triple j songs scattered in it the past few years

nothing will change come next year either, infact it’ll probably continue on its own self inflicted downward spiral into mediocrity and irrelevancy

gotta appeal to the primary demographic. the only real highlight for me is the genre specific shows that they run at 10pm onwards. beyond those it’s unlistenable. late 00s/ early 10s was when the station was at its best in my opinion. good mix of personalities, good music, good stuff.

they’ve adapted to what their listeners/demographics want, if you’re not in the majority, you won’t be serviced.

i’ve been disinterested in triple j for a while, ever since they gave artists like drake, billie eilish etc lots of playtime despite being some of the biggest stars in the world didn’t really sit right with the primary ethos of the station, but the straw that broke the camels back is the presenters. gone are the days of genuinely interesting and engaging comedians and music experts, now it’s just YEWWWE Yeah the boys/girls i’ve been to festivals since i was 18 ok my parents money types.

Before I listen back to the 100, my impression was it’s not too bad a year.
Yes lots of girl pop and could definitely do with more variety but alright.

7 of my 20 votes made it in which is pretty high and then there were another 5 songs from my personal Top 200 of the year so that’s enough (actually it was 6 not 5 maybe, can’t remember if Lucy snuck into my Top 200).

You could shuffle the order around (especially in the Top25) and maybe substitute a couple of Charli and Billie songs out and it would be a perfectly serviceable reflection of music in 2024.

I was at the Amyl and the Sniffers show last night, the same day as the countdown. They were pretty chuffed to have two songs in the 100.

Love Chappell Roan, although it's an odd quirk of the rules that not a single song off her album polled at all, released too late to be popular enough for last year's poll and ineligible this year. If it had been released slightly later, she'd have had at least 6 tracks in, and probably both the top 2, with Hot To Go edging out Good Luck Babe.

With any luck, the win this year will draw her attention and she'll tour here.

People complaining about the homogeneity but frothing the 2004 countdown make me laugh.

Also, as someone else said, people always go "the countdown is a clear indicator that triple j isn't playing enough x", but it just isn't true. Look at their top 20 artists played last year:

12 of those did not make the 100.
Of the 8 that did, 5 are Australian.

The problem is the voters not the station's playlist.
