Another tall bites the dust.

Too much too late. We hold on to these duds too long until it gets to breaking point, then we chuck them all out together. We should have kept Fanning or C Cloke as a backup.

I pity the poor tall skinny draftee who arrives at the club and gets thrown immediately into the ruck the first time Richards goes down.

Will we get Peter Evritts Brother Now?

Very Sad to see Tex to Go.
He will never again play AFL Footy!

Wow, is it 1999 again and we're about to draft Josh Fraser? :p

njac3 was wrong... he said that Walker walked out.
Well, close enough, I suppose. :thumbsu:

And Timmy, I'm not saying we've got the number one pick, but Josh was just that. Picked at 1, not "meant" to play in 2000, but played every game. And yes, he should have had more injuries, and we're lucky he hasn't so far.

Oh dear. If he was actually delisted, ie. Walker had no influence, then it is a shocker. Cam Cloke should have been kept in reserve before the Ranger, and now we are pretty much screwed in the tall department.

We must take a risk, at pick no.10 I feel, in securing the best ruckman at that time, ONLY, if Clark Keating is off the cards. If we believe Keating will be precious for the next 24 months, then sign him on, and pick up a ruckman late in the draft, that is not there for depth, but to take over when Keating leaves the club.

Don't panic guys.Besides richards and josh,we have no big men.But here's what could happen draft day
6 picks now
pick 8-possiblyselwood/proud
pick 10-possbly sellar(if available) or Tippet (ruck)
pick 28- middie or renouf (ruck)
pick 44-middie or ruck option/Goldstein
pick 63-best available
pick 73- Clarke Keating or nominate in psd
So even if i'm completely off the mark the pies will pick up pick up possible 2-3 ruck options,so any of those have to be better than tex walker, fanning and cam cloke....We will be ok.....probably better off than we have been.

I can't subscribe to this theory. Walker wouldn't have been a viable ruck option. Seriously, I can't believe we would have ever had that in our minds when delisting Cameron.

Secondly, Cameron will still be on the table with our last pick in the National Draft. We won't select him, but will I presume select a mature age ruckman. Why would we keep a guy we wouldn't redraft?

No risks need be taken in the top ten. Best available, both times.

I feel we have used the knife well. It's something which should have been done some time ago, but we have waited for a more suitable time. That time is now, and whilst there's a heap of pressure on next Saturday, then so be it. It's far greater than the pressure of knowing you're carrying a player who will never ever make it.

As if Tex Walker was going to be played as a ruckman anyway

Besides, Kurt Tippett and Todd Goldstein are both 96kgs already, while Sam Jacobs is already over 100kgs, so it's not as though they're built like a young Josh Fraser if we were to draft one of them.

Here is the problem right here. The kids we pick up are no guarantee to be better than Cam, Walker, Fanning and Hall and if they are going to be better they will not show it for 2 or 3 years. I felt that Cam was dealt with harshly, only getting 2 years on the list and I still believe he would be of more service to the club than Keating.

Hope you're right, but it would be a miracle if these guys were able to step straight into league football and compete for 22 rounds.. It happens rarely, superdraft or no superdraft.

We'll just have to wait, see and hope. And we have to be lucky enough to draft them first, and that other clubs dont snare them. The other clubs will know what we're chasing, and will be able to read us like books, so there's likely to be some dirty tricks on draft day.

Half agree. I agree we hold them too long and I wouldn’t disagree about keeping Cam 1 more year. The problem was listing Fanning in the first place and not delisting Walker a year or two ago. I would have re rookied fanning if we thought he might make it but at the end of 2005 I never thought he was going to make it anyway. Had we gone into 2005 without Walker and Fanning we would have been forced to get a ruck option via a trade or through one of the drafts. Then again maybe not. Maybe the problem is the coach just doesn’t think we need quality rucks.

I reckon that might happen where you have clubs with multiple early picks as in the previous priority pick days. Freo taking Haselby to keep from Richmond in 1999 for instance as opposed to possibly Pavlich had we kept 3. Who knows if that was even true. I don’t think a club would draft a different player when both clubs don’t get another pick until 16 places down the track.
