Masked gunman fired 'random shots' at passing pedestrians before taking hostage, police say

Clad all in black and carrying two rifles, a masked gunman who fired shots on a shopping strip on the NSW South Coast is now in custody, with police saying they don't yet know why he did it.

Following the arrest police searched his Windang home where they say they discovered two unsecured firearms, five gel blasters, military knives, six replica handguns and a police uniform.

Police also allegedly uncovered more than 1,600 child abuse images and two videos.
