THE oft-debated future of veteran Shane Tuck at Richmond has taken a positive turn with the Tigers opening negotiations with the 29-year-old for a new one-year contract.
Richmond football boss Craig Cameron confirmed last night he had moved to re-sign Tuck after the defender had become out of contract by failing to play the required senior games to automatically remain at the club next season.

We are also close to re-signing King and Nahas as well with King having reached an automatic renewal clause as well when he played 16 games. Both players look like getting 2 years deals.

So he wasnt part of the future but now we are giving him another year....hmmmmm whilst i am a supporter of tuck, and have been disgussted at the way the tigers have treated him....what does this say about the brains trust?

Are they saying we got it wrong ealier in the season or are they simply incompetent?

Noone ever said he wasnt part of the plans, no doubt were looking at signing him to take the stress off developing mids and win some inside footy good move

Had to laugh at the use of the word 'defender'.
Can't be easy for Tucky, i think he gives it his all. Good on him for not giving up, or getting all bitter and twisted about it.

I think he will be signed for next year comfortable in the fact that next year the team will be picked on form alone. I think for this year not playing him everygame has been far more beneficial for the likes of Cotchin , Martin , Edwards , Grigg , Conca etc the list goes on!

Tuck would understand this and he will also know he needs to spend plenty of his pre season working on his disposal because he still turns it over more times than not.

Great move by the Tigers. I hope they resign Miller as well but I also hope he only plays a maximum of 10 games next year.

NQT, I'm taking this as an admission they got it wrong as well as appearing willing to learn from it. I hope they sign him if only to show the rest of the team that if you do the hard yards, you'll be rewarded.

Couldn't have said it better myself. He's been an absolute trooper this year, I'll be wrapped if they can agree to terms on a new contract.

Tuck is way underrated!!

If only he could kick better!!!!:)

Glad we re-signed him. He will be of value for at least a couple of years.

MIller I am not keen on, never have to be honest. I just think he is getting in the way of developing our other players.

Tuck simply offers ball winning ability we simply don't have in certain areas. Plus he must be a solid character to keep plugging away!!

This made me smile and i hope he signs. Congrats tucky
I dont think it matters if the club has changed its stance, because if you dont change and move on you give up any chance of change/improvements etc. A good example of that is alex rance. Dimma basically said in a few interviews that he didnt think he had it in him, but look at rance now, and look at the change in dimma, we have a new coach pet.
I think as a club they have to be tough, they have been and i think it working. :thumbsu:
Sign him up boys

Thats my thoughts too i probably didnt word it properly , lets hope next year isnt a repeat of last year and this year !!!

THe most important part is that he had a contract with a special clause in it......"failing to play the required senior games to automatically remain at the club next season. "

It is clear that the club managed his number of games in order to not trigger this clause, thereby keeping him guessing as to next year.

It aint pretty but maybe that is the way to best manage him.

He will probably play until he is 40 on rolling 1 year contracts!

A one-year contract is a "stay-of-execution" rather than a "change of stance".

Was thinking the same thing.

He was clearly out of favour, now getting a new contract? Still same old Tucky and still plays exactly the same way as he always has. Why have they deviated? Making it up as they go along? Worrying, especially when there's been considerable media and fan pressure on this issue (moreso in that run of bad games mid year before he came in). FWIW, I don't think it's a massive issue if he actually goes on for 1 more year or not but looks like the club have not only confused me but themselves with this one.

Like who? I reckon if we had any long term options fit, they'd be playing (i.e. Griff/Astbury). We're pretty thin forward IMO, so I'd imagine Miller will remain on as a mature rookie, but Griff will be option #1 for the role Miller's been playing, if/when he's fit and healthy. I'd still like to see Astbury given a shot forward, especially with Moore and Grimes likely to be available in defence next year.

I reckon Martin's form in the forward line has potentially helped Tuck's chances of playing on. Would like to see Martin forward more, and it leaves an extra spot open in midfield for someone like Tuck.

Thats the thing with Tuck I can see him playing well into his 30's.

He doesn't rely on pace or skill just hsi hard body and therefore I can't see his abilities dropping away quickly. Players that need their pace are the ones that battle when they get into their 30's imo.

I believe he will go onto the vet list in a couple of years. Probably 2013 along with Newman. He will therefore not be taking a spot off anyone. Next year we should be playing for finals. We have our high end draft picks its about filling the gaps now with picks in double figures. Games should be played on merit. If he's best 22 keep playing him. If not, then he plays at Coburg. Pretty simple.

Magic, in regards to Miller taking someone's spot, WHO?? Griffiths got games when he was able to and wasn't up to it. No point killing his confidence completely. CHF is toughest place to play. Hope Miller is kept with Griff getting first crack next year if he's available.

I've always said - I'd rather Tuck get the ball and kick 25 helicopters into out forward line than have some kid with a beautiful kick who can't get it in the first place.

And I don't think he's that bad a kick anyway.
Agree. Sometimes his helicopters into the forward 50 would be causing defences to be a little nervous. I think when possible he should look to handball off.

Yep. Well said. Although a year too late for me unfortunately. I am confident the club has learned from this mistake however.

P.S Congratulations Tuck. Looks like the club is now starting to show you the respect you deserve.

Deserves another year and I don't have a problem with him getting it.
But what's with the conspiracy theorists? He was told, along with Miller, that opportunities might be limited, but was given the chance and has taken it and has been given another year. It's pretty simple when you actually look at rationally.

Hey I'm with you Tugga.

Looks to me like the club has decided this year worked out well with Tucky, and have offered him another year for the same reasons he was kept on this year, and in the same role. He's a good mentor for our young mids, and good backup in the midfield when needed.

Pretty sure the club did the right thing and put him on the draft table last year, but there were no takers. After this, the club offered him a role which he no doubt gets pretty well paid for. I'm sure he is welcome to leave any time he likes, but the truth is, he probably won't get a gig anywhere else - not even GWS it would seem.

Hardwick was reasonably clear about this when asked about Tuck and Miller last week.

To me, the club has handled the situation very well, and continued to give the bloke a spot on the list when others wouldn't.

Agree. Someone mentioned well done to him for not being bitter and twisted. Crikey. If every player took their bat and ball and went home cos they deserved a game and missed out there would be a lot of AFL players homeless. He did what the coach in a professional sport asked of him. All good! I've got no problems with Hardwick, Cambo and co. getting as much as experience into Conca, Batchelor, Dea, Edwards, Grimes, Grigg, Helbig and Houli. Foley needed games in to him too due to his recovery so someone had to miss out. Well done Tucky!

FInally, some posters who can actually see it for what it is and not think it's some personal vendetta.
Like I said, Tuck has earned another year to help the kids adjust. No more, no less. And good on him.

Agree here. Wanted him to stay on and the RFC did the right thing in a few ways. By not playing him all year some kids were able to develop. Second of all by not activating his clause means we had all the power. Imagine if we activated it and he did his knee on Sunday. We now have quite a few games into our kids and think we are at the stage of just playing our best 22 regardless of age next year.
