To borrow a line from a prodigy song...

Half of our bushfires are lit by some nutter, who seems to get off on destroying property and sometimes taking lives.

I enjoy a good bon fire\camp fire and can see the fascination in staring at the flames...however I'm acutely aware of keeping it safe and under control.

However these nuffies seem to hang out for Total fire ban days and feed of the attention, often they'll hang round the area the fire has started to view the whole thing.

The laws are very tough 10-25 years with a murder/manslaughter charge attached if people die...that doesn't seem to stop them.

I don't get it?

That would account perhaps for more of the accidental starting of fires (35%)

The 50% that's confirmed deliberate\suspicious has to be more to it then being drunk/stoned etc

Don't know about half or even what the number is, however you'd think there be a portion in the volunteer organisations like CFA. The professionals would have more psych evaluation and the like.

Short of getting a confession you would think it would be nigh on impossible getting a conviction for deliberately lighting a bush fire, be so hard to prove.

Didn't we all when we were kids, and I don't feel the need to go out there and start fires.
In fact, I don't really understand why anyone would deliberately want to start a fire.
