Collingwood trained for the first time since its opening-round defeat to Adelaide on Thursday, but Mick Malthouse is still no closer to knowing the make-up of the side to face Hawthorn on Sunday.
Several players are under injury clouds - including James Clement, Alan Didak and Travis Cloke - and Malthouse will not be aware of their availability until late Thursday at the earliest, despite having to name a team by 6pm that day.
Malthouse is acutely aware of the public's thirst for accurate knowledge of his team's composition, and he thinks they deserve better.
"There's teams playing tomorrow night that put their teams in at the same time as I put mine in for Monday or possibly Tuesday - I just think it's ludicrous because we're not giving you blokes a fair indication of what the side's going to be," he said from the Lexus Centre.
"Under the current rules it doesn't matter what 25 I name (on Thursday). Contrary to what you may believe, I can change it like that (with a snap of the fingers).
"One of the things that I just detest is that I'm so vague with you guys because it's Thursday for Sunday after we've played a Monday game.
"I can (change the side) on Sunday morning, so how fair's that? At the moment I can't give you a realistic side - I'll be very honest with you."
The Magpies' coach was a little more forthcoming on his thoughts about the Hawks, who opened their season with a win against the Dockers.
"They've refined (their gameplan) a little bit and they've got a bit more maturity about them," he said.
"The kids they played there last year are now a year older and a year more conditioned to the program and playing some very, very good football."
He's particularly impressed with Hawthorn forward Mark Williams and admits the young Hawk will probably provide him with headaches whether Clement comes up or not.
"He's fantastic, he's the next step up from Phil Matera," he said.
"Phil played out of a forward pocket, but he comes out of the full-forward zone and is roughly three inches difference in size and plays with the same pace and the same accuracy - he's a fantastic player."
His interviews are all the same. ******** all about Collingwood really and spend more time applauding and complimenting the opposition. Hes been doing this for years. Could try complimenting his own players for once.
