Under Age U17s - 2027 AFL Draft General Discussion

The big Aus Boz lived up to expectations on Saturday's scotch vs carey game. He started up forward and suffered an injury early. Ive heard reports its a broken nose. He decided to stay on, and ended up kicking 2 and having 20+ in the forward line. Watch him rise up the 2027 draft board as we get closer. very underated

Thanks for the self appraisal Boz.

Hey Jen, just wondering if I could get your opinion on a young gun sammy mccall. He sort of flies under the radar as he hides behind some other raw talent in wayde spence and Lochie Gnatt. Mccall is a gun down at the hawthorn citizens and it is to be known that on the weekend for school he had 40 and 3 in the B's! He is best known for his football IQ, agile footwork and sneaky goal sense. Sammy also has the adaptiveness to play as a rebounding defender and videos have been leaked of him locking up Eli Kravic in a 1v1. He is a Collingwood NGA reject, which is suprising as I'd put in top 10 for this age group. keen for your view and opinion on him.
Cheers, the big Plugger

Thanks Sammy, not an easy ask in locking up Eli from what I know, good job. Gotta have some real physical traits to go 1-1 with him.
Unfortunately the pies nga is very hard program to get into, sorry about that. But sounds like very good traits to have. I'll have to make to another game to get a better sense, maybe take some footage.

What makes you say that? Do you know how they determine who makes it? Do they have a cap on it in terms of numbers?

Now sure of the numbers prior to being 16, but from what I was told by a member of the academy, its a dozen players currently in the PDA (high performance). 12 or so.
Maybe they have to be selective, not sure.

When you're around 15, I think there is a development list of players that get to play in the U15 NGA games, but at the end of the year, you have to be accepted to progress further
From last years U15, Eli, Luke De Valle, Cooper Brancatisano made it.

I assume thats 12 in each year? Hawks have about 10 in 16s and 17s year but only 5 this year

Yeah, thats about right. Around a dozen per age group. Sometimes they train with the older kids, sometimes not. They have sessions every fortnight.

Ours is combined with the FS academy.
So this year includes Mcguane, Lonie, Wolff, McCarthy, Saxena. The overagers still qualify with Older McCarthy (Tadhg), Luke Quaynor, Doug Kerr.

I know teams such as Balwyn will nominate eligible players to Collingwood to be looked at for NGA academy. Another Balwyn boy has just been accepted

do you know his name?
yeah generally the kids come from YJFL, but noticed a couple from this years U15 have come from South Metro Junior football league.

Hey, over the weekend I went to watch the Ashburton vs Balwyn Tigers U16 Div 1 game (115–6, Balwyn’s way). I don’t usually catch many games from this division, but if this is the standard of footy, I’m keen to watch every week. Balwyn absolutely dominated.
Even though the First Qt scoreline was 8–2 in Balwyn’s favour, they really broke away in the last three quarters it was unreal. Would love to know who’s behind recruiting all these gun players!
Best players
Sonny Johnson #4
Koby McDonald #1
Oscar dogget#18
Max Wapshott #13
Archer smith #11

Have seen Doggett's name before.

What are his basics?

Sonny is Zac’s brother (making his debut for the bombers this week)
Bounced around a fair few clubs. Has a fair bit to do to follow in his brothers footsteps.

Thanks for the insight Jen. Im not actually Sammy, Im just an avid football fan (the big plugger) and I can tell talent when i see it. Scotch is realising some serious good players. Their year 10 cohort is dangerously exciting with their fast ball movement. One player in particular, I noticed while at their training last night was Wayde Spence. Wayde (dossa) Spence is a lockdown defender, who also has the ability to switch up forward and impact the game. Last week Wayde had 5 touches not including kickouts. In the third quarter Dos took an absoloute screamer on the Geelong ruckman, coming off a back-to-back BOG performance. Wayde was robbed of an eastern ranges trial last september. He's also amongst some of the young brewing talent out of the Kilsyth Football Club, this kid a genuine ripper. Can't wait to see him make it big time. Silly not to have him in your top 5 cal tomey!! one to watch out for.

When I was a youngster SANFL had so many star players of German heritage. Not so much anymore it seems? Where did they go?
