hahaha, read up on rock history mate.

So look, I'll give you a brief history lesson. Into the 50's and onwards rock music basically went into two directions that can be mostly but now wholly defined as "black rock" and "white rock." "Black rock" went in the direction of Doo Wop, motown, funk and in the late 80's rap music, while "white rock" gave us hard rock, prog, punk, metal, arena rock and many others. If you don't believe me, then just have a look at the variety of artists currently in the Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame.

So as you can see, rock has become an extremely diverse and broad genre, consisting of a number of highly different sub-genres...U2 fit into a few of these sub-genres...certainly they are post-punk they're also probably alternative and arena rock - the point is, they are without a doubt, a rock band. No, they're not hard rock but that's just one of many sub-genres that can be classified as rock.

They're a pop band mate, deal with it. I dont need your cut and paste of someone else's opinion to change what I already know.

I dont believe they have always been a pop band, in their early days Id call them political/idealogical Rock, but they moved into Pop in the early-mid 90s and have never looke dback since.

Next thing you'll be trying to tell me Rogue Traders and Shannon Noll are Rock too:rolleyes:

As I said, there's many sub-genres that can be considered rock. The Beach Boys for example are in the Rock'n'roll hall of fame and are consistently in the top 10 or 20 of any top 100 rock artists list made by, for example Rolling Stone Magazine...would you say they're not a rock band? Would you say the Beatles are not a rock band, how about the Eagles? Would you say Aretha Franklin or Tina Turner are not rock artists?

If the answer is yes to any of those questions you're very, very wrong.

And you should read what I cut and pasted, because that's the historical truth - it's not an opinion. You see there's a difference between what you think you know, because it's what you and your mates believe, and what is actually true. Face it, you have no idea what you're talking about.

So everyong else's opinions are wrong and yours are THE right ones. Geez, you must be God... Care to enlighten us on what your definiton of both "pop" and rock" are?

So you're saying that "Beautiful Day" wasn't a rock song. Funny, sounded like one to me. Sure they dallied with electronica for a few albums, but seem to have come back to that stadium rock sound.

The trouble with whacking a band in a genre is that quite often they straddle genres. For example, try putting The Cat Empire in one genre. they go between Latin, Rock, Hip-hop and Reggae. Are Radiohead not rock because most of their songs are a little bit retrospective and melancholy? They're certainly not pop. And to answer your question I'd call U2 rock, Rouge traders are dance although they seem to use some aspects of rock, And Shannon Noll is rock although he seems to use mostly aspects of s**tiness.

Can someone explain to me why a band can't be both pop and rock?

Especially as pop in its basic form means popular music. U2 are rock musicians who are popular, in effect they are both.

U2 have such an amazing career, better than these throw away pretend-fake punk-rock bands such as Simple Plan and Hooberstank. Listen to any U2 concert and you can tell its rock.

Bobby Giovani wouldn't know good rock if it slapped him in his face and dragged him around by his trousers.

Totally ********in agree OXX

Since when is Coldplay "Rock"

Voted by the "peers" hey ....

Who nominates ?

Compared to that shyte lot U2 wins hands down

It's amazing how precious some people are about small issues such as these, U2 not a rock band and so on.

Whether their judged as best Rock, pop, folk, whatever, at the end of the day, everyone knows that they fit into the "Best band in the world" category.

The proof is all their, as for those who say that they are very much overated, well, 30 years together and still as strong as ever, 30 years together and still selling out 50,000 seat venues in 20 minutes, 30 years together and still topping the charts all over the globe, 30 years and not one line up change, a band not affraid to re-invent themselves to keep things nice & fresh.

I'm not having a go at a band like Judas Priest, but do they fit into the "Rock" category? even though they recorded with 80's / 90's bubble gum pop producers Stock Aitken Waterman?

Hmmmm.

U2's latest album is mellow, boring and overrated. Not much of their music over the last decade has never had me as excited as the awesome/very good stuff that was the norm of the 80's/early 90's U2.

One really great thing about U2 concerts though is that they play a lot of their 80's stuff.

You can judge how good an album is by how long it's been on rotation in the cd player since the time of release, it's still very much on high rotation on my cd player, probably more so than any u2 release since the Unforgettable Fire / Joshua Tree days, some of the tunes in my opinion are classic U2, Species, Miracle Drug, Blinding Lights, Sometimes - to name a few.

But that's JUST my opinion, and ive been a fan since the War / Red Rocks days.

Agreed 100% - that's what johnnyhoward was saying earlier in this thread.

U2 may be not as good of late, but they have made some great music

5 nominations = 5 Grammy Awards.

Easily the most overrated band in the world today. They are not even 1/4 of the band they used to be in the mid to late 80's.

I think they are now just a overly commercial pop/rock act, too commercial, you dont see as many huge bands sadly latch onto every latest marketing trend because hype and reputation is what is currently fueling this band.

I thought the band was going to retire after this tour.

The one sadder case is the new incarnation of INXS and the Strolling Bones, well they have not added anything new to the table.

In the end, artists such as Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Paul McCartney are still as creative and understated as they ever were.

Errr, who the ******** do u like then? I tihnk poptart summed it up best why they are not ovverrated. And they never said they were going to retire after this tour. In fact they are going to bring out a new album, u know what that means??? More hit singles, more awards. Deal with it.
