For the life of me I cannot understand what happened after Ugle took that mark ( 4:25). He's going back to take his kick and he gets tackled from behind??? WTF is that???? He didn't play on he was just taking his kick. Should have been 50m a penalty

Play on was called too early imo. Gave me a heart attack.

Notsureifsrs.

He took to long to take the kick (judged by the umpire, it's irrelevant as to whether it was accurate or not) and was called to play on.

Play on was called and he was legally tackled from behind.

Correct free and (lucky for us) advantage given to Watson.

Hope that helps :)

Then his Teammates should of said to kick it or Your Hot

so he was called to play on? the video doesn't show that but I suppose it's the only explaination. I don't think Ugle even knew it was play on.

+ he didn't hear the call from the umpire due to 150,000 pie supporters making all that noise.

and as above, advantage given (damn that was nerve racking)

Was called play on, look around the 1:35 mark

the link you gave does not have the umpire commentary.

it was a fair call

Isn't it 15secs before play on? He was given 8-9..

can't really blame the umps, everyone's adrenaline is running high (umps included) and quite hard to keep your concentration with 85,000 people yelling at you. Considering the stage the game was in the last 4-5 minutes, I reckon the did an alright job.

Anyways there were far worse decisions for both the teams early on in the game and it pales in comparison when compared with them...

It was 10 seconds from the instant the ball landed in his arms until the time he got tackled, which was around 2 seconds after the call to play on.

A very short time to get rid of the ball for sure.

Perhaps the umps get as excited as the players, but it seemed a ridiculously short time.

But I must confess I don't even know if there's meant to be a certain time players are given... I think it's 20 seconds to shoot at goal, but not sure if a time exists in general play.

Very tight call on a first gamer, with so much noise that there was no guarantee at all that he would have even heard the ump's call to play on.

He took too long, he didnt hear the play on call, he got tackled.

Pretty simple.

Its irrelvant if the play on call was early or late. Once the umpire makes the call, you know you only have a second or three to kick the ball.

He learnt pretty quickly about one of the downsides of playing in front of a big crowd....you often cant hear a thing.

It was a tough call from the umpire, but you can clearly hear the umpire say play on. Ugle didn't hear it though. Added to the tension in the dying seconds!! I thought Ugle looked good in the last quarter. Has something we don't have heaps of - blinding pace. Hope he gets another gig against the Bulldogs next Friday.

Play on is called when......

Rule 17.2(f)
where a Player, awarded a Mark or Free Kick, fails to dispose of
the football when directed to do so by the field Umpire;

No time limit is actually given and I cant find one among the rules. I believe it is up to the umpires descrection in the spirit of the game. Given the circumstance of the time of the game I have no quams with the umpire calling play on when he did as they want the game mving along and no time wasting.

The umpires are told to call play on fairly quickly when a player is showing signs of winding down the clock late in the game. It was absolutely the correct decision, and we are quite fortunate that advantage was called immediately after.

I remember reading somewhere (not sure where) that you have about 10 seconds if it's a mark, 15 for a free kick and 30 for a set shot. Might be wrong but that's what I remember.

Btw he did well to jump up and harrass Watson. He had Jetta all on his own in the 50 but he pulled the kick and we won the ball back:thumbsu:

I just love that he apoligised on twitter for scaring us all!!

Play on was a quick call and I'm sure his teammates warned him but couldn't hear him over us screaming!!

Was good of him to take the mark under such pressure when he had played for a total of 15 minutes!

It worked out. Thank God!

you start counting seconds when the ump offically blows his whistle to confirm its a mark. Its 7 seconds until he blows it again to call play on. Big mistake by the ump.
Not sure how long you are allowed but i have heard it 10 seconds before he can call play on. Needs clarification...

You're right. Called play on far too early and I'm not sure Ugle was aware of that. Someone interview the young bloke.

Inexperience, umps don't Fk around late in tight games, he'll learn from it, luckily it didn't cost us 4 points IMO, not trying to blame the kid (even if we did lose) FWIW, i don't know how you train for such situations lol, all in all i think we found a player in this kid, he just has something.
