Why the f*#k is this clown the umpires chief?

He couldn't play or coach yet they have this guy in charge of one of the areas in our game that needs heaps of improvement.

I have umpired junior football (6yrs) and understand that you make mistakes and can't make everyone happy.

But for the love of god I don't understand how the 3 blokes on the ground can have a different interpretation of a particular rule in the one game.
Then this bloke Jeff comes out and never shows or acknowledge the mistakes and inconsistencies made.

Two Questions;
1. Is it worth having an independent review from a source outside of the AFL admin?
2. Who would you like to see in charge of the umpires and why?

The biggest joke is how goal umpires are treated more harshly then field umpires.

Examples; A few weeks ago Taylor Walker almost broke a young Tigers neck with a crude tackle, yet Walker actually got the free kick, the reward for that umpire was to umpire our game on Friday Night.

Then this week, and an umpire mistakenly calls a goal a point in the Tigers game (it should have been referred to Video but the field umpire turned it down) and the goal umpire gets suspended for 2 weeks.

Seriously, how the **** does this happen, the field umpire in the Walker case probably should have been fired, let alone suspended.

It's time to get rid of the Geesh, and replace him with either an umpire or a just retired player who both understand the modern game more than he ever has.

The ones who should get their collective arses kicked are the rules committee.

They have made the game almost impossible for the umpires to reasonably and consistently interpret.

There is not a minute of any single game goes by that you have 50-50 decisions on ...

-incorrect disposal or not
-holding the man or not
-holding the ball or not
-fair tackle or otherwise
-shepherding out or fair
-in the back or fair
-running too far or not
-deliberate OOB or not
-did a kick travel 15 metres for a mark or not
-the advantage rule
-incorrect disposal or not
-tackle too high or ducked
-ruck infringement lotteries
- the whole friggen thing is a lottery now.

On top of all that, they pay a free kick once out of every possible 4-5 that they could potentially pay, imo which just causes further confusion many times.

The rules need to be both simplified and clarified.

We have the Perfect Man for the Role right here on this very Board! :)

I haven't seen Gieschen's show for a long time, but I remember him being surprisingly candid and happy to call a bad decision for what it was.

I think he has a tough gig and one that we (the collective supporter base of all clubs) would probably find a reason to complain about anybody who filled the role.

Not to mention that before calling holding the ball, these players must have had a prior opportunity to dispose of it. Players are being tackled as they touch the ball and still getting penalised when they have four blokes sitting on their back with arms and legs preventing the ball coming out. Would love to know where they think the ball is going to come out from and why having players sitting on your back is not an in the back infringement.

The next passage of play, someone takes on three blokes and spills the ball as he is tackled by the fourth and it is play on because the ball came out in the tackle (if the tackler isn't pinged for holding the man once he has dropped it). No wonder no-one understands how the rules are applied when there is so much inconsistency.

The bloke in charge is left in the job because he is the only one able to keep a straight face when declaring the game clear of umpiring mistakes week in week out. Umpires are human, they stuff it up regularly, why not admit it? At least fans will then feel justified in their belief they were robbed and we can all move onto the next game.

It's not his fault it's the AFLs. My best mates Uncle was the interchange steward and he sais they use to have meetings togather with the umpires and Geoff. He said Geoff was clearly telling the umpires to favour certain sides which deffs are the GWS and GC. He wouldnt have tofl them that unless he has been told by thr AFL. He quit after that angrily. If it wasnt him then it would be someone else, he is only doing the job that the AFL ask him to do. It's blood pathetic and a shame to our game but ah well there isnt much to do about it. I feel sorry for the umpires for the amount of crap they cop, they are only human and doing what is being asked of them.

That's odd....because the Suns get nothing! Almost as little as the pies do.

I agree mate, same as GWS, I think they both get treated roughly by the umps but maybe I just think that becuase I want them to win becuase they are the underdogs.

I don't think umpires have any bias or lack of towards Collingwood.

However It is frustrating that they make mistakes and I agree about the interpretation when it comes to incorrect disposal.
