Analysis Umpires

Bagging the officials in any sport is a cop-out. Pretty simple really. If you are good enough the referees/umpires are irrelevant. I know many cannot see that which will always be the case. Of course, many of those who do complain vociferously, have rarely done any decent level of officiating.

Agreed Thy. Umpiring has been lost in the migrational quagmire and I feel for them. Good people trapped in isolation who have sacrificed significantly (generalistaion perhaps). League influencers have a bit to answer for, been a contextual professional for 12 years and, I would hate to be forced to interpret weekly like this. Mistakes were made today but, where I’d the basis for equitable decision making?

have a close look at that video - as in a real close look...Cripps didn't deserve a free - all he did was drag his 'tagger' and fall into another Norfs player, spread-eagle himself on the ground with no Norfs blokes on him and get up and appeal for a free - he needs to change his tactics with taggers AND umps....we've already got Murph for the flop around and beg for a free role at Carlton.

Really? Anderson grabbed his jumper, dragged him down and the pile on began. Cripps gets monstered every week. He needs to be removed from the contest but he can’t be blamed for being dragged to the ground.

Well there ya go - two Carlton supporters looking at the same incident come up with two different interpretations - no wonder umps have a hard time of it in officiating AFL- it isnt the umps -- it is the stupid AFL rules it is a structural fact of life , part of teh rich fabric of teh game blah blah blah

every top player in AFL gets tagged - some learn to handle it better than others.

Not sure where to go here. Cripps needs to be better but, I wish he was given a fuc*** chance to actually contest. Feel like Cripps is disadvantaged more than any other in the comp but not sure if he responds well. Qandry?

He has lots of options - one of which is to play in a way that frees up his fellow onballers - accept the tagged role for parts of the game and try and take two taggers out freeing up team mates thats one way, the other thing to do is exactly what Martin/Dangerfield Bont do - is drag the tagger to a place of disadvantage - the forward fifty...today was a no brainer for that - we were down to zero talls anyway.

Cripps seems to want to stay on ball regardless. I’m at the stage where I want him to break tags regardless and fill the team obligations. We need to block for him or take him to places where he can capitalise. His hands are clean but, his impact is not quite there atm.

Cripps played a very good game from my point of view - other blokes are lifting and improving each week - Setterfield is a far better player today than he was 4 weeks ago...Kennedy needs to keep being played he is a very very smart footballer...when Setterfield/Kennedy become more reliable - Cripps wont be able to be tagged out of games...

I reckon. 2 points - I hate seeing Cripps begging, it does nothing but make him look vulnerable and weak. And supporters bleating about umpires after a win.........I mean........seriously? Any wonder people just drop dead from stress. Nothing will change and this? Every single week? Every club, every game, every ****ing week. You think perhaps one might wake up and say "Hey, you know what? I'm just gonna concentrate on stuff under our control - team selection, training, drafting, DEVELOPMENT, injury treatment". But no..........for some reason we have to ignore the actual performance of the players and bleat and whinge and moan - and it WILL.NEVER.CHANGE.

We need a Max Rooke; someone who, when a very good player is being unmercifully scragged, just absolutely slams into the scragger to the point they're seeing stars. Someone who's a role player, so they can get suspended without hurting us, but who does it legally with a tackle or bump.

Preferably, I'd like 3-4; that way, if things start to go poorly, they can start hurting people until it sorts itself out.

No issues, JAB. Too good a weapon though. Hoping Crippa can still respond like the champ that he is. Injured? Want to see him take the game by the scruff of the neck and own it. Watch Bont, De Goey, even Danger et al to see how to break a game open at the elite level.

Need smart mongrels for that - we dont have much in the was of mongrel depth yet - no brainer today was Martin into on-ball and Cripps into forward 50.

Cripps doesn't have the leg speed or kicking skills of any of those blokes - he is a fantastic big bodied extractor/ handballer and a very good mark - also he bleeds Blue atm.

I think he needs to hit the scoreboard more often. He is capable...

Some get paid free kicks for being held off ball.

Also ... I have a 50% Specsavers voucher somewhere if you're interested.

Anderson clearly tackled Cripps to the ground.
