I liked the one where Jetta was tackled, and handballed it out as he went to ground, and was called for holding the ball.

I also liked how it was within 5 minutes of Lynch taking on two tacklers, getting caught the second time, with his arms held, and him dropping the ball a metre away from him, only to be called play on.
Yep. That one killed me, a couple of times I noticed Eagles taking on the second tackler and getting away with it. Essendon given absolutely no leniency.

Taking on a second tackle is prior opportunity.

What's your decision should be viewable now, can't see it because I am at work.

Apparently the ump who missed Kennedy's saunter over the boundary line is being dropped. What did he say about Reimers v Kerr? And no comment on the Melksham free for HTB?

In general, the entire umpiring system needs to be looked at... independently. It might not even be the fault of Jeff Gieschen who could very well be under the instruction of the AFL.

Reimers v Kerr - said decision was correct.

Kennedy v McVeigh high fend off - admitted it was a high fend off, however said umpire wasn't in a position to see it properly and would've expected it to be paid if he saw it. Bit of a cop out IMO.

Kennedy v McVeigh OOB - admitted a clear mistake and umpire to be dropped for rest of season. My feelings are that the boundary umpires get made scapegoats a lot and the field umpires get far more leniency.

Interesting that he didn't touch on so many others, like the 'throwing' call against Hocking or the Jetta HTB when he handballed it. Not really good enough IMO. As if they can't do a half hour show (rather than 5 to 10 mins) to go over heaps more decisions.

bit of minor justice...

THE boundary umpire who missed Eagle Josh Kennedy twice holding the ball out of bounds on Saturday has been banished for the finals.

In the process of pushing off Essendon's Mark McVeigh with his left arm, Kennedy held the ball about half a metre over the line not once, but twice, just metres in front of the boundary umpire, who had a clear view of the incident.

I see your point, but the job of a field umpire is much more difficult than that of a boundary umpire. The fact that this bloke, 10m away missed the ball go OOB twice..

I reckon his head was exploding that the field ump didn't pay McVeigh the free kick for high with the fend-off personally ;)

So a boundary umpire gets banned for the finals because of one mistake, yet the field umpires who made upwards of 30 retain their jobs?

having watched the replay I have fairly much come around to your way of thinking Whomb - on first watching I didnt think the umpiring incompetence was all that bad or biased:o, but second time round, well lets just say it was a fairly disgraceful effort allround.

must have had my 'green coloured glasses' on that day...

Feel sorry for the boundary umpire - Wouldn't have been suspended for his non-decision - If the field umpire didn't miss the Kennedy fend off.

Have no problem with the umpire in the play missing decisions due to being unsighted. It would be absolutely impossible for the umpire in the play to position himself to see every decision given the speed and unpredictability of the play.

However, isn't that why there are 3 umpires? Have been thinking about it, and I'm wondering, how many times do you see the umpire out of the play give a free kick for something that happened on the ball. Off the top of my head, I don't think it would happen as often as once per game. Sound about right? You would see them pay off the ball decisions often, and usually for nothing much, but very rarely for decision on the ball.

I think the umpires off the ball have been instructed to focus too heavily on off the ball wrestles, contact, etc. when there should always be a second umpire watching the play and providing an alternative perspective... Any umpire down the field would have certainly been in position to see Kennedy's fend off caught Mcveigh high as a perfect example and they should be ready to jump in for obvious oversights such as these. It rarely seems to happen.

Boundary umpiring is the easiest job in the AFL, particularly now there's 4 of them. The fend off hardly has any relevance to him missing the ball cross the line twice by some margin 15m away. No reason to fell sorry for him.

Gieschen and co have to be seen to be doing something re bad umpires. The boundry umps and others fall but the real controllers of the game get to keep their places .

for example the UMPS and MRP need to explain why this was allowed :

Cram was pushed in the back by Hurn by his 2 arms while trying to spoil/ mark a ball against another Eagle , Cram falls and does his shoulder in .NO free kick but play on is allowed to the Eagles way .Cram is out for the year .

Welsh was hit in the head by Hams and yet no MRP penalty by them .Welsh cant play again in the match and Hams escapes any penalty.

Watson hit in the head by Waters who found time to move his head but not his shoulder and collects Watson. No penalty on Waters and Watson cant play again in the match. The MRP was wrong in its decision .

Umpiring this year on the whole has been dreadful, the efforts being shown in WA tonight are right on target with the rest of the season. I think a good hard look needs to be had at the entire umpiring department, not just Gieschen dodging fair questions.

It is probably worth mentioning how bad the umpiring was tonight. It was horrible one sided bull dust. It was just that this time it was in our favour. Umpires were worth more then 7 points to us tonight. I watched it at a pub that had the races turned up and I could see it without the influence of other Essendon supporters or commentator opinions.

That free kick to Hurley in the square was ridiculous.

A whole heap of shit served up by the umpires tonight.

Bloody ordinary, and I feel for the Port fans. What the hell was that free to Reimers? The umpire who was about 50 meters away plucked a high out of nowhere.

Ah, well.

"A-ha, a-ha! Now you know how it feels!"

Trengove backed into Hurley with no intention to go for the ball and Sheppard for a teammate. It's in the laws, you cannot Sheppard in a marking contest.

The deliberate out of bounds against them was stiff, reimers got taken high twice. Robbie gray got a free for a high tackle, early when he threw his head back and wasnt taken high at all.

They go both ways
