General Bombers Talk Umpires

I'm not going to be harsh on umpires before I've seen the replay. My question is was the umpiring as bad on tv as it felt at the game?

At the game you can let emotions get the better of you and can lack judgement but I thought the Essendon member section as a whole had universal hatred towards the umpires tonight.

The decisions against Hurley annoyed me but what was worse was watching Hurley get man handled, grappled and blatantly held by Firrito late in that last quarter and receive nothing.

No, it was shocking at the game. Honestly, it was shocking for both teams.
That decision in the last quarter where two north players smashed into each other with our player going up in between them and somehow giving the free away was the worst decision I have seen in my life, we ended up kicking a goal out the back which was disallowed.

North went on to kick 3 straight after that and almost cost us the game.

Other rubbish that got served up was little push in the back calls where players were already on the floor, 50 meter penalties that were very questionable.

I was at the game on level 3 and almost had to walk out and go down to standing room just so I had some space to vent my frustration, it was an absolute joke and sorry to say, but jordan banister ( 1st game ) just isnt up to it. Fast tracked and probably doesnt deserve his spot.

Yep it was pretty bad. More a case of nearly most of the 'close' or 'questionable' decisions going against us.

We have seriously pissed off the umpires department and it has cost us games in the past and will again in the future if last night is anything to go by.

Needs to be an independent inquiry now about the level of bad decisions we get. Hurley is unlucky because he isn't soft so Umpires let defenders do whatever they please.. He could have been given at least 8 free kicks last night in marking contest and instead LOST 3... crazy stuff..

Haven't seen the replay (thanks foxtel) but what did commentators say?

what was the free given for when Hurley marked 20 metres out straight in front in last quarter. was it there?

Petrie got held by hooker and correctly got a free but im sure Hurley got mauled by Firrito a couple times and no free?

and how many north free's ended up being goals to them?

Apart from umpires was not happy about our defensive transition when they got the ball and rebounded from defence, even if they got the free in back 50 they looked dangerous when they ran.

Umpires made a few bad decisions, but watching on tv I didn't think it was too bad overall. Umpires seem to be allowing play to continue much longer before calling for a ball up - I like it, as plenty of times the ball comes out if they give it another four or five seconds and it results in fewer stoppages and a more free flowing game.

The umpiring favoured NM significantly - of course the commentators wouldn't make comment - with Brereton, Roos, Russell and co calling the game being renowned Essendon haters!

A 5 goal win was made close by ludicrous umpiring.

Drew Petrie was given everything (5 free kicks) but there was a different set of rules for Hurley down the other end.

I just acknowledge that week after week Essendon go into games with a 5 goal handicap as they get screwed by the umpires every week. Until Gieschen is sacked this will continue to be the case...

Watching from TV, in the second half everytime you heard the whistle blow in our 50 you just knew it was going to be a North free kick. Other games this rd have been not to bad in regards to the umps but this one was a shocker and also Bris V Melb was pretty ordinary.

You can't seriously think that we're invariably screwed by the umps. There's a serious problem with umpiring in the AFL- worse than any other competition in the world IMO- but there's no vendetta against Essendon.

Last night North definitely had the rub of the green. Hurley was unlucky, but the umpire also let it go when Hurley held onto Firrito directly after that contest... at least he evened it out. Other times there were atrocious decisions made, but they also made good ones as well and generally let the play go. It wouldn't have mattered if we won by as much as we should through quasi decent accuracy.

I thought they ****ed us a fair few times, but at least they weren't paying bullshit holding the ball decisions, and they were rewarding dropping the balls and good tackling at the same time.

Still, Stevic has got to go. ****ing rat.

How can any sane person think that NM didn't get a HUGE 'rub of the green'... it literally got to the point that any time we entered our F50 in that last qtr the umps would blow a whistle and give the ball back to NM.. There were two occasions on the wing when the umpire blew a free kick and had to take a moment to decide what he was giving it for..

I agree Bris got a shocking run too.. some average calls early.

Also does anyone else think this 'double banger' goal rule needs to change? Doesn't EVER sit right with me that you can score a goal without any play.. perhaps a free kick out of the middle or a kick from the Fifty metre arc or something. I just think it stinks especially for something so unbelievably soft...

The poster that compared Petrie to Hurley was spot on.. Petrie only needed to be looked at the wrong way and the whistle would go, Hurley can be gang tackled, shoved, pulled, kicked, head butted and I doubt it would have been called, in fact he probably would have had to give the ball to North for "falling in an incorrect manner after push"...

Does anyone know what the hell happened to Crameri against 2 players 20m out in the last quarter? Took the grab but got free kick against, did he shove someone out?

Two North players ran into each other and according to the umpire this is an infringement by Essendon allowing this to happen...

Essendon should complain about the umpiring.

North Melbourne are a very average football club.

Essendon kicked 20 points, Zaharakis and Crameri were terrible tonight. Melksham stuffed up a few goals too.

Stanton (I don't usually say this) played a 3 vote game tonight.

Hep was amazing too, as was dempsey and NLM.

Still, 23-15 free kicks, 2-1 50M's, 12 point goals. They got a lot of free kicks and 50 meter penalities resulting in goal. At least Essendon earn there goals not on the back of cheap free kicks.

Free kick count means nothing.

Context of free kicks and ones that weren't paid speak more. Hurley getting mauled all night long with nothing being done about it is by itself enough to say North got the rub of the green. Then look at the rest of the rubbish; the dives, the non calls, the inconsistencies of both free kick and marking decisions, the inconclusive touched goal from Jobe where the goal umpire was about to give it the all clear for 6 (shit the umpires didn't even look like calling for the review until the North defenders got in their face, can we expect players to have a say in decisions ever week from now on?)

If you factor all of that together I don't see the problem with Essendon being disappointed with the umpiring. To be blunt, it was shithouse.

All this talk about the umpires having an ongoing bias against Essendon is just embarrassing. We're all passionate about the Bombers, but this type of purely emotional argument is pointless.

Also does anyone else think this 'double banger' goal rule needs to change? Doesn't EVER sit right with me that you can score a goal without any play.. perhaps a free kick out of the middle.

I agree - a second goal is too harsh a penalty for what's usually just a bit of push and shove. A free kick from the centre would be more appropriate.

I was a lot more concerned with our inability to kick straight in the last than I was with the umpires. Sure there was some bad decisions but there always are. On the tv it didn't seem obscenely bad just that we didn't have a good run of luck with the 50/50's.

Lol'd at the one where Hurley took the clear mark and got pinged coz the North bloke fell over.

Anyone else hear the mic of Jordie trying to explain it to Hurls?

"You sheppered him out of the contest thats why Michael"
"But I took the grab I wasn't near him when he fell over"
"Oh.. Uh.. Yeah... Nah it was the other guy mate"
