Roast Umpiring

I don't think it's the umpires fault entirely. Must be so bloody hard adapting to a million new rule changes every season and it's obvious their being told to crack down on certain areas which would throw even more doubt into their mind.

How about we don't change the rules for the next 5 years?
Players will learn to adapt to the rules = less free kicks
Umpires will learnt to adapt to the rules = more correct free kicks

On top of that players in the prime of the career won't become obsolete just because they play a position affected by out of the blue rule changes i.e. small forwards who can't play midfield and big physical traditional ruckman.
And on top of that test out new rules before they are brought it. The sliding rule has shown that needs to happen. Even though it is supposed to be for "sliding" into players, most of them are for players jumping on the ball and someone running into them.

Who else heard the umpire talking to a Cats player when he was standing the mark for Jake King's shot at goal. At about 13 minutes into this video:

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2013-05-04/round-6-tigers-v-cats-q3

Sounded pretty friendly, having a laugh and calling him mate. I find it hard to imagine him talking to Jake the same way. Not saying we lost because of umpires, but they're familiar with the Cats and respect them, so they get treated well.

Just watched the coburg game and what stood out was the quality of the umpiring. Simple common sense stuff just like the old days. The guys at the top level make it more about themselves than the game. Send Geish and his crew back a grade and bring these blokes up!
I know right? The crappy umpiring in the AFL stands out like dogs balls when comparing it to the VFL.

It is entirely the fault of the "rules of the game committee" and their ability to ruin our sport so they remain relevant. Too many rules in an "already complicated" sport, with different interpretations depending on different viewing angles and the context of the decision. Kevin Bartlett and company stuffed up our great game with the "hands in the back" rule and the rot has set in since. Five years on and the game has not improved as a spectacle.

The Bulldogs game in Round 3 was the worst I've ever seen - and we won the game easily. But the umpires this year have been pathetic. There's a 5 goal start at Subiaco - that's a given - due to home ground umpiring. Certain players are looked after - and based on Saturday night's game - you can't touch Selwood as he collapses like a soccer player if he feels any contact. Cotchin SHOULD be looked after, but it is within the rules to hold his jumper and pull him off the ball when he does not have it. Two rucks against Maric is permitted and nothing is done, but it it happens to Jolly, then it's an automatic free kick.

While the umpiring dept is run by a bitter ex Richmond coach, we will never see a game that WE had the run of the green, yet opposition supporters are fast become aware that they WILL get an unfair advantage when playing Richmond. The chant of "Bull****" that echoed around the MCG after ANOTHER disallowed Richmond goal, reversed free kick to Geelong with obligatory 75M penalty and goal is typical of what we are used to. But no one at the AFL will stand up to Geishen and his cronies because it involves Richmond. Of course, we are about to make finals, and Geish is embarrassing himself week after week.

They evened the frees up in the last quarter after Geelong were way in front.

Yep, noticed that as well smasha. We got a few our way in junk time once the contest was over.

Even with the 2-3 soft frees we got late in the last quarter, the count was 13-18 their way so probably would have been more like 10-18 without the junk time ones.

The umpires really killed our chances in this game. I went expecting a Geelong win but when we managed to skip out to 19 odd points in front and had the momentum and run, the umpires really got Geelong back off the canvas and into the game - against a quality side like Geelong, you really need to ride your luck and make the most of your opportunities.

Geelong fans probably happy to get the win but IMO, that would be a hollow one for them (even though they would be used to winning most weeks going on for 5 odd years!). Umpires really influenced the game to their advantage.

Also, did many people see the Hunt-Newman-Selwood incident? It happened right in front of me at the game but I wasn't watching it closely at the time as Newman had managed to get his kick away and I was following the ball.

From what I recall, Newy was running towards the 50 and scrambled a kick to the top of the square whilst Hunt was in pursuit. Hunt brought down Newy after he kicked the ball and they may have had a bit of a scuffle (not sure what sparked it - did the replays show?). Umpires somehow then paid the free to Hunt (not sure why) but then Selwood came in to intervene and obviously the wrestling stuff happened.

I was a big fan of Selwood's before this game but that dump/slam he did on Newy was very reckless and dangerous. Hopefully he gets punished as it could have been a lot worse had Newy landed on his neck/head instead of his back. No doubt Newy will probably cop more of a punishment though than Selwood for his part

Yes it is. The illuminati are behind it all. And behind that is Geelong.

Carry on with the excuses.

How about you check the date of the post you're responding to? Thanks for your input though.
It's quite funny when someone goes to another team's board chipping in with some sarcastic comment, trying to sound so smart and clever, but actually makes a complete fool of themselves.

Well played joe444 :thumbsu:

Just on the nominated ruck rule, the reason a team has to nominate their ruckman at stoppages, is so the umpire can enforce the 1m rule before the contest.

As long as no opposition player goes near the other the other team's nominated ruck, prior to the throw-n, ball-up, etc. then it does not matter who contests the ruck.

This tactic has stifled Maric's effectiveness at stoppages at critical stages in the past two weeks, and we need to come up with a plan to combat it asap.

I am of the opinion that the constant rule changes and different adjudication of rules on a weekly basis, would make it hard for any umpire at an elite level to keep up with it let alone understand the dribble that comes from the powers that be in the afl.
I am not defending umpires because I am certainly of the view that certain umpires are a bit chatty and more respectful to those teams that have been more successful than those that may be mid table.
Now why is that? Have we got a group of players that are just a bunch of arrogant, nasty, undisciplined sooks that continuously whinge? Or do the umpires just genuinely hate us for no apparent reason?
We can sit here and bag the umpires all we like but being brutally honest, its not their fault. They take instruction from those who are higher up and it is those big headed men like Demetriou, gieschen and to a lesser extent Kevin Bartlett. These blokes continuously change what was a great game, into a game where im sure fans do not understand half of what is going on out on the field. These are the same blokes who enjoy the big fat pay check that goes into their pocket after they create a rule and say 'IT IS TO BETTER OUR GAME...' It is not making our game better, it is becoming a farce. They players are great and have arguably to best talent that has been seen at afl level. FFS (excuse the french) would we just let them play FOOTBALL! None of this ' you slid into his legs, free kick', 'you touched him in the side, free kick', 'you are not a metre away in the ruck, free kick' etc.....
This game has become disgusting to watch, what the big wigs of the league are asking the umpires to officiate is comical and the umpires are only human and I believe majority of them are also confused as to what the actual rules are. Fix the game, its a mess!

Rant over, go you tigers.
