I actually think the car is underrated, in that they’re simply taken for granted in many western societies. Efficient, reliable transport that is affordable for individuals to own. Can’t think of any other invention that has done as much for personal freedom.

Agree with this. I'm sure they were appreciated when they were a new invention but now it's all about the aesthetics rather than practicality.

I drive a shitbox though so maybe I'm just jelly.

You could say that for any invention. When it's new it's 'Wow, this is brilliant', progressing through becoming a part of life so it's handy, but you still remember it was worse without it. Then you get people who've had it since birth (or at least a small child) so it's always been around - you don't think about it unless it's not there.

Which is a good way to rate whether things are that essential or not. Take away your mobile phone and yeah, it'd be annoying, but you'd get by. Take away your indoor plumbing and life would be a pain in the arse. The underrated (these days) inventions are that ones that aren't 'sexy'.

Agriculture, until humans sorted out reliably feeding ourselves we didn't have time for anything else.

Without agriculture we were nothing more than a primitive hunter gatherer society, with no spare time/resources for any development.

Agriculture, the cornerstone of society.

Television. Can someone tell me how the hell that shit works? How do they take a picture and get it to travel through cords and shit and then onto our tv screens. pure magic.

Bikes.I often wonder if the person who invented the bike didn't do it would we have invented it by the present day? are there seemingly brilliant simple inventions that are perfect for human daily life that haven't been invented yet? The bike is such a simple invention yet is so good in getting us places quickly with virtually no strenuous exercise. You can get from one side of melbourne to the other in 20 minutes without raising a sweat. I reckon if you went back and got a bunch of cavemen and brought them to the present day, bikes would be among the things they would be most impressed with. Imagine if they had a bike when they were hunting on the plains of Africa? Underrated.

The microwave. I mean you put your food or drink in a small box for a couple of minutes and it comes out hot. What a ripper invention.
Not only that... The fact that the rest of the inside of the box doesn't get hot either. Crazy

So as I lie in bed, trying to sleep because I have to catch a flight in the morning, I think about many things.

I've been amazed at the concept of "time" lately. Humans invented it. We rely on it every second of the day (pun slightly intended), yet we never really appreciate it. When you think about it, nearly everything we do relies on time. Work; Sports; Health; Finances. They all use time to properly function.

What are some underrated human inventions out there?

All your avatar is making me think of is Bird Law and Kitten Mittens

This one is right up there, and when talking about physical, tangible inventions the plough has gotta rate highly.

I still think the greatest invention of all was/is:

Written Language.

It is this I believe that allowed successive generations of humans to truly grasp and improve upon the learning and achievements of their ancestors the best. Before this we were limited to only what our own communities could remember and describe to us directly through vocal words or demonstration. It has allowed ideas that failed t ocatch on or be mastered at first survive long enough to be fully exploited when the time was right for it.
