I'm currently doing Journalism at Curtin in Perth. This is my first year. I've only been at university since Monday, so perhaps this is all premature.

I plan on moving to Melbourne next year. I'd like to do the same course, Journalism, over there. It seems I'll most likely go to Swinburne, RMIT, or La Trobe. I'm not fussed on what one.

So, does anyone know how you go about this? Have you any experience –whether it be switching from one uni in your city to another, going interstate, or even going to a new country? Or do you just have tips in general?

I might just go and talk to someone at student services. But opinions and anecdotes always help me out a lot more.

Any help would great.

Cheers.

University Of Technology, Sydney.
That's irrelevant. There are dozens of other unis I could attend. But I'd like to live in Melbourne. The three unis I listed were the ones I could, and would like to, realistically attend.

I want to live in Melbourne. Thus the reason for switching, thus this thread existing.

Limiting yourself to one city is no way to broaden your horizons. Have you done a pros and cons list or is this all gut feel?
Mate, this is not a thread about lame competition between cities. I want to live in Melbourne. I have family in Melbourne. It makes a lot more sense to live in Melbourne.

Melbourne is the reason I'm moving. If there were no other options, I'd stay here until I finished my degree.

Unless you've constructive help (which I doubt you have), please try and refrain from posting in here. It isn't necessary.

Why not just stay?
Seriously, must every thread I create in here become some debate about how I'm idealistic or naive?

Honestly, there are no issues with transferring. It can be done, and very easily. I'm simply asking for personal experience, and recommendation.

Can a mod actually come in here and make that clear? Such comments aren't needed.

The reason you get stupid answers is because you ask stupid questions. Take a deep breath and actually call up the universities, only they will be able to give you a guide of what sort of GPA you'll need to transfer and how many subjects you can get credit for or whether you may even be able to transfer mid year if you were interested in that.

P.S. - get a license.

Could probably try the Tertiary board next time for Uni advice/recommendations/experiences.
Got some strange responses in this thread. :thumbsd:

RMIT will be the most difficult to transfer into I would say. It's got an excellent reputation for its journalism program.

Out of those three, La Trobe will suit what you're looking for in a non-academic sense. Plenty of clubs/societies, vibrant campus life, on the tram line to hipster central, i.e Northcote, Fitzroy, Collingwood, and plenty of alternative types roaming the campus.

Good luck Silent Alarm. Sounds like you're looking for a bit of an adventure.

I've heard Swinburne is the hipster uni?

La Trobe sounds like a solid option though. I'll be living in Fitzroy, so it sounds nice and easy.

Not so sure about Swimburne to honest.

RMIT has two campuses. The city campus is perfect given how close Fitzroy is to the city. The big drawback however is that there's little of the campus atmosphere which you associate with most big unis, this of course being because the campus is scattered across the city.

La Trobe is a good place. Not sure what your employment prospects will look like when you graduate though. It's a tough field and Melbourne and RMIT have a more reputable program.
