Hi.
Just a quick question, my mate has an unsecure network for his wireless and we where havin an argument on if it was dangerous to have one.

Can someone please help.

Dangerous probably not, stupid definetly. Most wouldnt care about a non secure local network

To teach him a lesson steal his internet and download torrents, serves him right dont secure your stuff deal with stolen ip

I have to leave mine open for my PS3. For some reason it doesn't connect with WEP enabled.

Really?

try changing it to WPA, if your router handles it.

people could upload viruses onto his computer/network. So from that point of view it is dangerous, but the chance of it happening is quite low.

My neighbors is unsecured, I use it occasionally when mine drops out or if i'm over my quota.

Router, Wifi card, adapter?

I have the same problem (which I made a thread that has gone unanswered! :p)

Works unsecured (sometimes ). Bloody wireless networks are a prick to set up.

kick your roommate in the nuts

if you've got a reasonable modern router, it literally takes 1 minute to set up the security settings.

click on WPA or WPA2, choose a network key, set up said network key on your computer and bobs your uncle >,>

WEP has been cracked years ago...... takes minutes to break through with the right equipment.... its amazing the amount of ppl who still use it though..... I carry my psp around and there are at usually 1 or 2 networks that are vulnerable whereever I go. Hax0rs going wardriving would be licking their lips.

ps: if he is that stupid to leave his network unsecured...... he probably stupid enough to have left his router with the default password on........ie: "password"

kick him off the network and he'll get the point.

So how do you put a network key on the an unsecure network?

im guessing u mean im supposed to have a webpage or something with the settings of my modem?

If she doesnt know what you're talking about then the default user/pass might still be set which you should be able to find in the manual.

The default log in is normally admin//password or administrator//password.

Not dangerous but very stupid, anyone with a unsecured wireless network deserves to be leeched from.
