Upcoming Retirements

The World Cup final is played on the 28th of April 2007. A lot of the Test team will be nearing retirement. This is what their ages will be.

Warne - 37 years, 227 days
McGrath - 37 years, 78 days
Langer - 36 years, 161 days
MacGill - 36 years, 62 days
Martyn - 35 years, 189 days
Hayden - 35 years, 181 days
Gilchrist - 35 years, 165 days
Gillespie - 32 years, 9 days

Keeping in mind that we don't want everyone to retire at the same time, who do you think will still be around, and for how much longer?

You won't find Macgilla retiring for a while yet

Warnie might have another 3 or so years left in him

If Martyn gets dropped from the Test team again and keeps non-performing in the One Dayers, you can gurrantee he'd retire from international cricket straight after

Langer and Hayden has a couple left in them yet

Gilly's the one that might be gone come the end of the WC, at least in ODIs anyway

Warne will outlast all of those players. I wouldn't be surprised if Warne tours England again.

McGrath will be gone from ODIs after the WC, if he makes it that far. Pigeon is a series-by-series proposition, although I reckon he's still world-class. Maybe this year's break will extend his career. It's hard to tell. I expect him to play the Ashes and the WC, and then probably call it a day.

Langer will play the Ashes, and probably another 12 months after that. Not in the frame for the WC, so that date is irrelevant.

MacGill - who cares? Warne's not going anywhere and Cullen should be blooded.

Martyn needs to score some runs if he wants to stick around, in either form. He's been ordinary in ODIs, and has been OK in Tests since being recalled. If he fails in the Ashes, his Test career will be terminated, and if he continues to struggle in ODIs then he's no certainty to last until the WC. The axe is more of a concern for Martyn than the pull of retirement.

Hayden could play Test cricket for another 3 years, especially if he stays outside the ODI mix. He's stated that he wants to play at the WC. I don't have a problem with that, but I think it's unlikely.

Gilchrist is a tricky proposition, because he's been struggling with the bat. I expect Gilly to retire from ODIs shortly after the WC. He might continue with Test cricket at that point, or he might just call it quits altogether. It will depend on how he goes over the next 12 months.

Gillespie isn't particularly close to retirement. His concerns relate to whether the side has moved on without him. Gillespie is probably 4th in line as a Test quick, but further back in ODIs due to Bracken's strong performances. While he's still a handy back-up, Gillespie will need to show decisively that he can still perform at international level. Otherwise Shaun Tait will go past him, and Gillespie will be relegated to bit-part player.

the guys of the future are
white
cullen
cosgrove
hartley
johnson
watson
jacques
clarke

they are our future after the world cup

If Australia win the Ashes, I believe that numerous players will retire from test cricket.

These players are Langer, Hayden, Martyn, Gilchrist, Kasprowicz and McGrath. Buchanan will retire as coach.

Jaques is the logical replacement for Langer. Haddin will be keeper for a few years while Ronchi and Hartley get a chance to establish themselves. Once McGrath and Kasper retire the squad of fast bowlers will be Gillespie (32), Lee (30), Tait (23), Johnson (25), Clark (31), Bracken (29) and Griffith (29) they should be able to get us through until th 2009 ashes series and give younger bowlers a chance to prove themselves. Martyn's and Hayden's replacements should be out of Birt, Cosgrove, Marsh or Bailey.

Team for 2009

1. Phil Jaques (29)
2. Mike Hussey (33)
3. Ricky Ponting (34)
4. Travis Birt (27)
5. Mark Cosgrove (25)
6. Shaun Marsh (26)
7. Luke Ronchi (28)
8. Brett Lee (32)
9. Shane Warne (39)
10. Mitchell Johnson (28)
11. Shaun Tait (26)

Back Up Spinner- Dan Cullen (26)
Back up Batsmen- George Bailey (26)
Back up Keeper- Chris Hartley (27)
Back up Pacemen- Adam Griffith (32)

Warne ....... player.

So that's

Warne (37) - In for another 3 years
McGrath - gone
Langer (36) - in for another 1 year
MacGill - gone
Martyn - in?
Hayden (35)- in for another 3 years
Gilchrist - gone?
Gillespie - gone?

I'm guessing your team would look something like this:

Hayden (35)
Langer (36)
Ponting (32)
Martyn (35)
Hussey (32)
Hodge (31)
Haddin (31)
Warne (37)
Lee (30)
Clark (31)
Tait (23)

With regards to one day cricket, barely any of them are in the team as it is, and probably none of them will be around come the next World Cup, so I don't think any of them will have much of a role there. Maybe Gillespie.

is the world cup the first duty after the ashes?

an ashes victory would see Langer definatly go and i think Mcgrath would.

if Gilchrist doesnt do anything special in ashes and world cup i think he should retire as well.

i think Hayden could last another year even if he performs below par

Warne could go another 3 years.

Gilchrist said he would retire after the World Cup, but I'm not sure if he is talking about both forms of the game.

gilchrist may seek some personal milestones in the test arena before he departs. this may make him play on a little longer in the longer version of the game.

*46 dismissals away from healy's record of 395 (boucher may go on and surpass both of them anyways)

*he's on 84 tests and after this test and the ashes it'll be 90 (postponed 2 tests v zim and postponed 4 tests v windies)...may see him chase down 100 test appearances (mid 2008)

*i'm sure he'd love to have a batting average of 50+. that may prove difficult for him as he maintained it for 70+ tests.

Interesting. But the way he bats I can't help thinking he doesn't really cares about milestones.

MacGill has basically announced his retirement for 2 years time as he has said he will never tour for Australia again

I believe he said that it was unlikely that he would ever tour again because he won't tour Zimbabwe on moral grounds, and it will be a while until the next tour after that. He said his best chance of another tour was if he got a shock call into the one day squad. Keep dreaming son.
