Hi guys, I apologise in advance if this topic is up somewhere already, but I can't find the information I want.

Basically, I want to upgrade my 32Bit OS to 64 Bit (Win 7). Although I can play most games from the last 5 years on high settings, I am noticing a lot of games coming out that specify 64Bit. So, I need to know if there is a way of transferring all my programs, files, and folders to 64Bit, or am I going to have to reinstall everything?

Check that your hardware can deal with 64 bit before doing anything. If your machine came out with Win 7 pre-installed and it sounds like its an older machine it may not be capable of running 64 bit software. You could post your system specs on here to get a confirmation on that but even if if you can run it, you will need to buy another copy to do so. Not all that cheap you'll find.

Nah, it wasn't pre-installed. It's a decent machine, but I stuffed up making it 32Bit OS when I had the chance to make it 64.

It's an i5-2500k, ASRock H61something mobo, Antec 650 PSU, and a Sapphire 2GB HD7850 OC.

Then you should be good to go but MS will make you pay rather a large sum for the 64 bit version I'm afraid...assuming you can still buy it.

Personally, investigate if your games are available for Linux and if so, use a 64 bit version of that (I use Mint) If you play your games on Linux, it employs OpenGL instead of DirectX and gives around a 25% framerate improvement

I'm kind of leaning towards building a new machine tbh, cos I just have way too much on this PC to reinstall and swap over. At least if I build a new one I can throw this one in another room and have it as my office computer, and make the other one my gaming computer.

Sounds fair. I'm currently building a new one for my son based on a Gigabyte mobo and 4th gen i7. Gunna be better than mine

I'm building a pc, am a novice at doing this. How do I go about putting a OS on the machine? Do I have to drop +$100 on Windows and get the disk? I was thinking booting from a USB... Pls no hate :p

Thanks

Couple of options. You can put Windows on a USB but you'll need to get someone who has the 64 bit version as an .iso image to make you one.

Or if your new pc has an optical drive then just load it via that.

Or go with a free distribution of Linux if it's just for browsing and emails

But if your a novice why not just buy a decent laptop and everything is set up for you

Thanks for your help :)

Not sure on what the iso image is.

I'll be using the computer as multimedia center including games.

I'd also like to build my own computer for dem feels.

I was hoping I could download windows onto a USB and then just buy a product key to save some dollars $$

Just get a pirated version. Microsoft will give everyone an automatic update to windows 10 in a few months.

Dont know what a iso is..... it's a virtual disk image.
