My little bro has one of those older 360 models, without the HDMI connection - he recently purchased a Samsung 1080 LCD, and I told him to buy the converter box and HDMI cable, and now his 360 plays in 1080p which is great.

However, he gets no sound. Any ideas?

Does he have the official 360 HDMI cables? If so, there should be the 2 HD plugs (1 for TV and 1 for 360) and another connection (it looks like the standard component plug, but has 2 female points on it) where i think you plug in optical cables to surround sound.

Not 100% on this , but check it out

Well he bought the converter, so you take all your AV cables (four in all) and plug into one side, then hdmi out the other and the HDMI output goes into your tv.

There shouldn't be more than one input into the tv with HDMI from my understanding?

There isn't

the plug i'm talking about, is more of an attachment than a plug sorry. It hangs off the side of the cables, so you run the HDMI to the converter and the other end into the 360. Then plug optical cables into attachment and into surround sound

As i said, have never run it with a converter, only HDMI to HDMI

Ok, it sounds like what you're talking abuot doesn't really apply.

All I've done is connect the AV stuff to the Converter box, then a HDMI cable comes out of the converter box and plugs into the HDMI slot in the television - this should provide audio and video, right?

Only vid is working.

See, this shit doesn't happen with PS3's. You just plus one cable into your tv, and the PS3 configures everything for you! FFS I hate microsoft sometimes.

It could be the XBOX, Converter Box, Cables or TV. Try to work out which it is.

Test the TV with your PS3 or another HDMI appliance to test if the HDMI port isn't stuffed. Connect this directly to the TV, don't use the box.

If that works, test with another HDMI cable next using your other HDMI appilance to rule out a faulty cable.

If it works, attach the Converter Box using the working components.

If the converter box is working, then you know its the XBOX.

Tried all that.

The Xbox can send the audio data fine when using the standard AV cables. The HDMI port must be working because it recieves the picture, and we tried using a different set of AV cables.

Only thing that hasn't been tried again is the box (only have one box) so I guess that's it then?

Yeah but he just spent a few grand on a television and bought all these cables...

Not trolling here, but **** Microsoft make it hard for people sometimes.

What did Microsoft do?

Designed a console that didn't have an HDMI output. Its just a pain in the arse in general.

My PS3, when plugged in to any television, automatically assesses the optimal settings for the television and console, and applies them. Piece of piss.

It'll play in 1080P with component cables. Just use that mate. Its what i do

Seems like a lot of bother to go too for no real improvement

Yep, plug them in, switch the little switch to HD on the cable input at the 360 end, go to settings, select 1080P and whoila

HDMI does the same thing with less ****ing around, but the picture quality is basically identical on component.

KK I'll give it a shot

If he has the new desktop, system settings is under My Xbox, then furthest blade to the right. Then console settings>>>display

Old desktop, its just the furthest right blade, system i think its called

Correcto

Plugging them in via HDMI converters (or anything for that matter) is purely a waste of time too

Are you talking about the Red/Yel/White/Blu/Green cables?

As an aside, you most likely already know this mate, but the yellow is for composite video and is just hangs unused when you use the component cables.

Just use the Red Green Blue, and 2 audio jacks

The red and the white mate. They just go into your audio input.

The red blue green component cables are split from the yellow red and white in case you want to plug them into a separate amp.

Red green blue goes into the red green blue component jacks on the TV, red and white go into the audio inputs of the TV or your amp.

1080P picture guaranteed

I can get the picture and sound fine just using the cables, but it isn't as good a picture as using the converter.

Using the covnerter though, I just get picture, no sound. :(

Sounds like I'm stuffed.

I tried putting just the red blue green into the converter, and the other two direct into the sound ports on the tv - but it still didn't recognise the sound.
