How long would you spend in Orlando?

2 years ago, we spent 10 days and that was a bit too long.

I'd say a week but that would depend on if you wanted to visit all theme parks and do some other stuff.

Kennedy Space Center is a must IMO. It was excellent.

Magic Mountain near LA >> anything in Orlando.

Both Universal and Disney in Orlando have more than their LA counterparts. Disney World has about 57 different theme parks (ive only been to Magic Kingdom and the Hollywood themed one) and Uni is two parks as well as the Harry Potter area. Rip Ride Rockit ftw.

If youre a rollercoaster fan head down to Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay. Theres a bus that leaves from Sea World if you cant/dont want to drive.

Only thing the LA Universal Studio has that the Orlando does isn't the Back Lot Studio Tour.

Anybody been to Orlando and Miami and what did they think?

Depends on what you're there for. Beaches are nice - but no greater than any nice Aussie type beach. Nothing much downtown. Club scene is ok but extremely expensive (paid $18 for a bottle of Heineken in one joint). My advice would be to go to Cancun if you're in the vicinity because i) beaches are better ii) clubs are way better (all you can drink $50 etc) iii) things around cancun are way better eg Chichen Itza.

Orlando is great for theme parks. You could probably stay there for two weeks and go to a different theme park / attraction like Kennedy Space Centre, universal studios, disney world every day.

I liked Miami a lot. I did a lot of tourist things like take a jet boat tour of the mansions on the waterfront. Went down to the Everglades for an alligator and wildlife tour. Went to little havana and watched the oldies play dominos and buy cigars. And of course walking south beach during the day and partying at night.

went to Miami but my main purpose was to get some beach action to break up my trip of being in cities all the time.

I found its overall vibe to be quite thuggish, big guys with tatts and i thought the girls were just as feral.

however i didn't go during its most popular time so i enjoyed the peaceful time on the beach and seeing some cuban areas on a bus tour i did.

but in the end ill never go back.

Reading this thread makes me glad I'm only booked for one night in Miami, a few mates that have been have said it is pretty over-rated for what it is really. In Orlando for a few days beforehand, only in Miami for one night then off to the Bahamas for 3 days. When we get back into Miami it's straight to the airport & off to Vegas

I spent 4 nights staying at the Miami beach international hostel last December. I thought it was a great amount of time to go for. Going on pub crawls organised by the hostel made nights out soo much cheaper. I could get 3 redbull vodkas and 3 shooters for around $20 but as soon as I went to a fancier nightclub it was $14 for a lemon vodka. The beaches there for awesome, soo much talented to look at! I also managed to go and see the Miami Heat play which was a good experience.

I stayed there too. Pub crawl took us to a nightclub called story which was expensive as ****. Power went out for like 15 hours so the rooms had no ac and sleeping was impossible. Our room was also tiny as, barely 1m sir of floor space to walk with our bags on the floor

Haha that's a bit unlucky with the aircon. When I was there I was travelling with two mates. We decided to pay for a room that slept 4 people and paid a bit extra to keep the rooms to ourselfs so we didn't have some random with us, it gave us a decent amount of space

6 of us traveling together so it wasn't as bad as it could've been

I guess I'm not a fan of big cities or touristy things any more - and for some reason SF has never grabbed me - altho I have visited there many times as I have family who lived there for 40 years (but now live in the Napa).

In my defense, I did actually provide a list of SF tourist attractions earlier in this thread - so OK, 2 days;)
This is a fair point.

I've been to London 3 times now and spent about 2.5) weeks there over the 3 trips. (10 days, 3 days and 5 days)
I'll tell you, the city itself is a little stale atm, would only go back anytime soon for either
A) Sport
or
B) Day trips to Stonehenge and Portsmouth (HMS Victory)

If you've been going to SF so frequently, I would get bored too. I'm also at the point that I only get keen looking at unique architecture, different cultures, more country and relaxing environment and stuff of that ilk.

Other than Boise for the outdoors and LA for the theme parks, and sports in general, I doubt I'd do anything in America west of Chicago. Having said that, the different culture (maybe a bad adjective) I think would get me into Texas. But other than that, idk.

Can easily do a week in Orlando if going to all theme parks. Did a week back in 2012 and spent 3 days do the 4 parks at Disney, 2 days doing the Universal parks and 2 days doing water parks.
I did 4 days in Orlando

Probably needed 5-7 (5 if rushed, 6-7 if you just want to lounge around for a day.

We have got 9 nights in Orlando in October and we will hit all the parks plus Kennedy Space Centre. Main purpose is take our daughter to Disneyworld for Halloween.

Also have 4 nights in Vegas, 4 nights in NO and 3 nights in LA.

I will hopefully catch some NBA games as we are in the US for the first week of the NBA season.

Would have really liked to go to the Superdome in NO but the Saints are playing away when we are there.

If your daughter is 3-8 - 4 Days Disney (1 day Animal Kingdom, 2 days Magic Kingdom, 1 day Epcot/Hollywood Studios)
If your daughter is 9-11 - 3 Days Disney (reduce that to 1 day Magic Kingdom)
If your daughter is 12+ - 2 Days Disney (probably go 1 day Magic Kingdom + Hollywood Studios, 1 day Animal Kingdom + Epcot)

Then throw in 2 days Universal Studios (daughter will be exhausted too much to do it all in 1 day, so spread it out)

Need to do Kennedy Space Center (I didn't do it, but is on my to do list)

Then outside of that, there's other stuff to do, water parks, seaworld, LEGOLAND is just down the road halfway to Tampa too I think.

I think we have 7 days at the Parks (1 at Magic Kingdom, 1 at Animal Kingdom, 1 at Epcot, 2 at Universal and 1 at Seaworld and one spare day for Mickey's Halloween party at Magic Kingdom where they close the park at 7pm and only people with tickets to the party are allowed in the park)

I will be exhausted by the end of it

TBH, I'd maybe change Epcot to Hollywood studios, but go to Epcot every day for dinner.

I wont pretend Im an expert on Epcot, was the one I didn't do, but locals told me there's nothing great there apart from 1 or 2 things and the food.
I think with a child, Animal Kingdom will be more enthralling than Hollywood studios, so maybe do that 1-2 things on the Hollywood Studios day so you do what's worth doing.

But there's a huge range of food at Epcot. Around the lake at the back there's different areas with food from different parts of the world. Canada, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, American, Japan, Morrocco, France and English. So I'd go there for dinner.

Was planning on doing that myself, but cbf doing EPCOT in 2 hours, just went to Hooters for dinner and ALOT of beer.

I went to both cities. Miami wasn't really my thing--they love Aussies and are super friendly but it's really just a party town. It was good for me to relax there at the end of my trip though.

Orlando was great but I preferred Universal over Disney. Have you booked accommodation yet?

Univeral is heaps better than Disney, unless your a little kid

SeaWorld is pretty crap. If you are heading towards Tampa you might as well go all the way to Busch gardens, hands down the best park

Yep do this. We got a pass that got us into SeaWorld (which was crap), Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove (nice to relax) and the water park in the area (names escapes me, but its very Australian themed)

No not yet been states before but just wanted advice on a few different places

Looks like my trip will be a short one

Vegas

Might throw somewhere else in as well

.

Take your kids to Gatorland when you are in Orlando. It's pretty good and the price isn't too steep. http://www.gatorland.com/

Perkins is a good family restaurant if you are looking for a nice home style place to eat.

Animal Kingdom is cool and the safari is good value, it only goes for like 12 minutes. You have to travel on a boat to get to Animal Kingdom. Pity you are not going to San Fran as the Safari West is awesome and about 10 times better than Monarto Zoo in Adelaide.

There is so much west of Chicago to enjoy - I am talking mainly about the awesome scenery and the small towns - not big cities. My earlier posts on this thread give some suggestions which I won't repeat here.

Re TX - I lived in Houston for many years and love the Don't Mess with Texas mindset, but you have to live there as a resident to appreciate Texas and the Texas folk. It is not really a tourist state, although Houston has some nice museums and art galleries. But when I retired I left Houston as the summers are way too humid, plus the floods and hurricanes (I survived Katrina, Rita and Ike). Ike really trashed Houston and Galveston.

Off topic re your London comment - I got posted to London for 13 months some years ago - not one of my favorite cities to live in, but great for business. On the weekends I enjoyed getting out of town and driving up to Oxford and so on, exploring the country villages, market towns, old graveyards, and having lunch in the old country pubs. By way of contrast Tokyo/Yokohama is my all-time favorite city - lived there for 3 and then 2 years [I lived a roving expat lifestyle and was posted to many countries and cities around the planet due to my work in oil and gas project management based out of Houston] - love the Japanese culture and language and could easily have retired there if I cooda gotten a permanent residency visa.

Anyway - as a travel tip under this thread you should go west of ChiTown, for sure.
