I may as well ask here...

I have Foxtel IQ and want to burn to DVDs. Would buying a standalone DVD burner work in the same way the old VCR worked in recording programs from Foxtel? Ie recording whilst program running

IQ is getting full from Corws games and Movies..Need to make some space and want DVD quality.

Any Tech Heads out there???

I have a combined Hard drive / dvd and IQ. I play what I have recorded and copy to my hard drive. From there I edit it, if needed, and then burn to dvd.

We have a dual VHS and DVD player/recorder and all we do is tape to DVD When we record the disc can tape for 1 2 4 or 8 hours HOWEVER if you go for 8 the quality aint that good 2 or 4 is the way to go.

what brand. I have heard some brands not compatible or is that an urban myth?

I'd say it is an urban myth.

IMO the Panasonic DMR - EX87 is comfortably the best one available on the market. Records FTA in Standard definition and if you connect to a HD TV it will upscale DVD's or recordings on the hard drive to near HD standard. It has a 250 gig Hard Drive which gives plenty of storage capacity.

See link below

You should be able to negotiate the price of this one down to somewhere between $700 and $750

Sony puts out a fairly similar model for a fairly similar price. It has a weakness though in that its native recording is not in widescreen although it plays back in widescreen. If you burn to a disc it will be in 4:3 and depending on your TV may or may not play back in widescreen.

The Panasonic - which is the one I'd recommend - used to have this problem but this model does what it should - record in widescreen if the telecast image is in widescreen.

Yes it definitely works.

But thge problem some...er.....friends of mine have come across...

A typical DVD recorder has settings to record

one hour
two hour
four hour

etc

With the quality stepping back pretty steeply as you go.

With (as an example, not suggesting I would do it..) games in iq lasting more then 2 hours, you need to record it on long play (4 hours) so you definitely lose some quality.

Good enough for watching on a pc/laptop but as a keeper to watch on TV comes out a bit grainy.

PM me if u want a hand.

JB hifi used to be the only place that sold the 8.5gb DVDr's but I have now found them at Big W. They can record a full game on the highest quality for my little machine.

Thats an myth, basically foxtel is a non encrypted signal (except for the box office movies) that means that you can send a signal to anything (even to your pc) without any issues.

The other thing to keep in mind and they might have improved a lot since I bought mine is that the recording quality isnt fantastic and for my machine (pioneer about 3 years old) you would have to have a to spread a footy game over 2 discs to get reasonable quality as anything over 2 hours especially with a lot of movement and detail like a sporting event can get a bit pixelated.

Thats awesome that your recorder supports dual layer discs, I thought the only people buying those were people who "back up" XBox 360 games like myself :p

This is only the case for some of the cheaper recorders, I have a pioneer machine and it starts from 30 minutes and you can icrease it in 10 minute intervals all the way upto 6 hours, so instead of recording 2.5 hours in 4 hour mode you record 2.5 hours in 2.5 mode which the bit rate isnt that much different from 2 hours.

I would say from experience to get a pioneer machine that have been one of the better dvd player/recorder manufactorers around and all of their stuff comes region free straight out of the box.
