I'm giving you guys on the VAFA Board the chance to rate the best & worst umpires you've seen in the VAFA. It doesn't matter what section they're in or if they're in senior or Under 19 level. I'll start off by rating these umpires:

BEST UMPIRES:

Mark Gibson-In my years following VAFA, I can't recall a better umpire going around than Mark Gibson. If I was to choose two umpires from any league in my lifetime to control a game, Mark Gibson would be the first chosen. His ability to handle 'big occasion' games is better than any senior umpire going around.

Wayne Hinton- Like Gibbo, Wayne Hinton also has the ability to handle big games. He has complete control of a particular game and gets on well with players & clubs.

Steve McCarthy-'Macca' is the other umpire I would choose to do a game for my life, because he can control a volatile situation better than anyone else (Mark Gibson the other umpire who could do the same too).

WORST UMPIRES:

Martin Jackson & Graham Thwaites-Please see the 'Rivalry Round' thread for my thoughts on these two umpires.

Jason McNeice-The thing about Jason McNeice is while HE thinks he's a good umpire, everyone else does not. In the 2001 C Section Grand Final, McNeice had an ability to pay 25m penalties-no matter how small the free kick was, and sometimes I felt that he was a little hard on the Old Essendon team.

Oh dear Jase - to quote one M. Jagger, Feb 1965 off the Out Of Our Heads album:

"Don't you play with me, 'coz you're playing with fire"

For the record, my all-time favorite umpires are Tim Sutcliffe, Albie Firley, Dirk Kramer, Steve McCarthy, Leah Gallagher, Anthony Damen, Mark Gibson, Wayne "Chuck" Hinton, Graeme Thwaites, Geoff Caulfield, Sacha Koffmann......the list goes on and on!!!

Leave this one alone mate - it's not right.

Yeah Jase just leave 'em be old son. Let's all just agree that McNeice was a nutbag and that Jackson is on my list. The worst umpire I've seen was Nuffy O'Dwyer, late of the VAFAUA and the Marquee "cough, cough" nightclub. And Gibbo looked a bit like Peter Brock, at least in the old days

Jas,

We are pretty lucky to have so many umpires that are keen and wanting to umpire. Its threads like this that make kids not want to umpire. How would you feel if it was your name that was being bagged none stopped???

We should be supporting our umpires, not bagging them. Its easy to attack people behind a computer and blame them for winning or losing games.. how about we just worry about players and football what the game is really about.

This is a new low for your jase.. normal you give us all something really interesting to read with some really good ideas. But coming out and bagging individual umpires is just not on.

For umpiring groups retaining umpires is very hard, and people like you make it harder for them.

Not all umpires are perfect they make mistakes just like a football player does. If anything why dont you look back over your games that your all complaining about and look at when your player kicked a point.. or when he kicked the ball to other team.

This is the worst post ever by you Jase.

McNiece is a turkey...Nobody can dispute that. Not even the man himself!!!

Agreed that we should be encouraging umpires but we all know that criticising them within reason is part of the game.

My favourite is Dirky Diggler, loves a beer (especially a free one) after the game and always promises you 3 votes and a few frees next week if you get him one.

Albie Firley is another, his solarium tan, out there hair do and his rumoured night job as a DJ make him one of the more interesting characters of the VAFA. They are 2 jobs that you wouldn't expect to go hand in hand!!!!

Perhaps Albie got Nuffy O'Dwyer the promotors gig at the Marquee Club...? Great network of jobs at the VAFAUA!!!

I am quite clearly the greatest umpire in the history of VAFA football. My 5 A Section Grand Finals are testament to that, and the fact that I awarded myself 5 Jock Nelson medals proves that no one comes even close to me. I was and still am, the only umpire in radio history to found and host his own radio show and I(unfortunately) made Tom ''Crownies2" Brain the man and mega star, as well as alchoholic, that he is today!
If I had to name another umpire that has been nearly as good as me, it would have to be Chris Donlan, one of my VAFA protigee's(is that how you spell it?) who has gone from B Section reserves to AFL field umpire, followed by Kevin "Chilli" Segota.
Somewhere in there as the worst umpires in history would be a draw between the Caulfield 2007, Old Scotch 2005 and OMs 2006 reserves field umpires...
By the way, I will instruct my VAFAUA Umpires to make sure that Hampton Rovers go 0-18 this year.

Lloyd who umpires the Reds twos week-in week-out gets my vote. Always fair and more to the point, gives up his Saturday mornings to come and run around with our lot when many others wouldn't.

Strangely enough, I think some of the Clubbies umpires are great. Once played a game where only 6 frees were paid. They like to set the tone early, and only pay the free kicks that are really there. None of this "tiggy touchwood, it's-all-about-me" rubbish.
