Very sad to hear that.
have a brother who is a North Melbourne supporter and was a big Daryl Sutton fan back in the day; by extension so was I when he lobbed at Richmond in '82-83.
Magnificent kick of a football.
Will always remember him presenting me with a footy at a clinic at Punt Road.
Sad to hear.
Tough life ... if I recall he had dementia in his later years.

Just reading my Community Newsletter for Swansea, Tasmania, where I have a place. The following article is in this week's edition from a resident.

"VALE – Darrell Sutton Some Memories of a Former Tasmanian Footy Great Travelling during the past week or so in country NSW where one doesn’t necessarily get a lot of AFL news and the Internet can be variable, I have been slightly out of touch on the AFL front. It was therefore somewhat belatedly, upon my return to Melbourne, that I learnt with great sadness but with fond memories of the passing of Darrell Sutton. In 1969 and the early 1970s, as young public servants, Darrell and I worked together in the registry section of the then, Repatriation Department in Battery Point, Hobart. At that time I was playing with North Hobart U19s (with Fenton Jones, Percy’s younger brother, and Lee McConnon, formerly Triabunna, North Hobart, Carlton and Fitzroy) and Darrell was with Glenorchy U17s. He was a good player as a junior and had a reputation even back then for taking spectacular and very good high marks, most often against much taller opponents. I remember it was pre-season training time around February/March 1970 when Darrell announced to his colleagues in the office that he was going to try out for the Glenorchy senior team. This created much mirth in the office with several of our work colleagues telling him to get off himself and that he had a big head. Sitting next to him, I queried why, given his age (17), he was going to bypass the Glenorchy U19s at least for a year. Darrell replied that he thought he was capable and ready enough to get a game with the Glenorchy senior side. Anyway, ignoring the frequent office jibes Darrell persevered, trained hard and played reasonably well in the practice matches to be eventually picked to play at full forward in the Glenorchy senior team for the first game of the season – he was not quite 18. This naturally set his office critics back a peg or two. I saw him play his first match and he played pretty well. Needless to say, he was somewhat of a celebrity in the office on the following Monday morning. I also remember when Darrell and I played social footy together for the Repat team on some Sunday afternoons against other government departments. This was after we had both played on the previous Saturday - Darrell with Glenorchy seniors. We had a strong office team at that time that also included a few good amateur and Huon competition players. I don’t recall ever losing a match. I remember Glenorchy very quickly putting a stop to Darrell’s involvement though, once he had become an established senior player. When I left Hobart in the early 1970s for other places on the Northern bigger island, I followed Darrell’s career with interest, as I still do for all Tasmanian AFL players. I once worked for a short time in Canberra with Gary Cowton a former North Melbourne hard man and 1977 premiership colleague of Darrell’s. Gary commented that at times he used to marvel at Darrell’s capacity to mark over and spoil other players much taller than him, a skill of course that he became renown for throughout his career. Thanks for posting that KiwiTiger it's always nice to read these types of memories (although under sad circumstances). It helps me to remember the humanity of the players, which is easy to forget at times.....
