Maybe not known to most of the younger brigade but I can remember vividly, Dad allowing me to stay up on a Friday night to watch Dave Allen after Pot Black.

Dave was one of my all time favourite comedians and is one of the standard "5 people I would most like at a dinner party."

I reckon Dave was a breath of fresh air and would still be a standout in the politically correct times of the 21st century and one wonders whether he will be welcomed at the pearly gates after his wicked portrayals of the hypocritical catholic church?

We're going to miss your sense of humour Dave - the comedian with 9 and a half fingers! :(

Dave Allen To me was the epitome of a great comedian.
We've all got to go some time, but it's a shame when the really great ones go,
and geez 68 aint real old either.
Vale Dave, you made me laugh when there was nothing in my life to laugh about.
Regards,

Fogarty.

Geez he was good

Dave Allen, on stool, with a *** & a scotch, he could rip taboo subjects to ribbons, no swearing, all innuendo

RIP Dave

I was walking home the other day and we walked past a pile of stuff left out for hard rubbish collection. On top of an old desk was a box of videos and damned if one of them wasn't the best of Dave Allen At Large. I'm glad I decided to give it a new home now.

RIP Dave Allen you funny bastard.

Yep - 1 funny bastard. Don't make 'em like they used to.

Can only hope UK TV can re-run some of his shows in the near future. Been many years since I last saw him on the tube.

When asked what he had in his drinking glass (he always has a "high ball" next to his chair) "Is it whiskey, rye or scotch?" He simply replied ... "Yes."

RIP

One of my all-time favourite comedians - very sad when I heard of this tonight.

At least we can expect some re-runs on the ABC or UKTV - it's been far too long since his classic shows were on TV.

What a comedian - just a guy spinning yarns in a chair without saying one ********ing rude word; what a legend! He has joined our Frank Hardy in Heaven

Fantastic comedian and I religiously watched Dave Allen At Large when it used to be on the old TasTV here way back. The last episode I saw of it was back in early 1987.
A very simple style of comedy that always made me laugh.

RIP.

I actually hadn't thought about him in ages, then last week I saw a review for a best of DVD in a paper, can't remember which one. Was released on Feb 3. I'll be watching when I get it with a touch of sadness now. :(

I can't really add to what has been written here. Dave Allen's show had been a regular feature in our house when I was a kid, so I join those who are saddened by his passing.

Several years back my brother gave me a "Vintage Dave Allen" video for Christmas. I will give that tape a run again in the next few days. :)

I'll add my R.I.P. to those of the other old bastards in this thread ;)

Have the vividest of memories of dave, sitting there on his stool, or in his chair, one leg crossed over the other, *** going, and his nub sitting in his half-glass of whiskey. The golden age of comedy.

He had some damn fine sketch comedy too. Some of his mexican firing-squad sketches were great stuff.

Vale' indeed, Dave!!

RIP Mr Dave Allen.

He was the one who was never missed. My dad loved him and never drank or smoked. My mum was religious but drank a bit. But we never missed his show.

Absolutely fell about laughing with the comic stuff. I hope the ABC put him back in some ways. But is that going to be on the new digital channel.

Isn't it funny who we miss when they haven't exactly been mainstream but we are reminded of how great they were.

I remember someone saying that he never was really rude but the innuendo was fantastic. I would love to see him again or his shows.

I am playing my Vintage Dave Allen tape now.

Talking about the self-evident signs he sees in England -

I mean I go through Soho and I see a sign which says "live girls dancing".

What do you expect - "stiffs on a piece of elastic"?

:D :D

Great delivery, which made the jokes work, and I had forgotten how good his sketch comedy was too.

:(

I remember a show where he discussed such a thing (time, where does it go) about where he wanted to go.. "and it aint Heaven, no booze, no sex, no fun.. HELL, that's for ME!".

Reckon where ever he is that those around will be being entertained regardless.

It reminded me of one of his Jokes.

A hunchback dies. Its hard to get him into the coffin so they get a few guys to straighten him out and the undertaker puts the lid on.

Later at church, the vicar is a fire and brimstone type and is soon admonishing his parishoners.

"Youa r all here ! Hypocrites ! You all called him Humpty, everywhere I heard Humpty this Humpty that -Humpty back ! Humpty back !"

He goes on and on but the dead guy starts to curl up again in his coffin, putting strain on the lid. the bolts start to pop out and some of the congregation start to run out.

"There you go you can't even stay and face up to how bad you were to him" the vicar shouts.

Then the lid comes off completely and the dead guy sits up with eyes wide open looking at all those left.

(You can imagine Dave Allan telling this with the lights down lowwww)

The people all stand up and leg it, the vicar following them. as the vicar goes through the church goor it closes and catches his robe at the back. he cant move even though he is pulling as hard as he can

" Let me go, Im on your side, You Humpty back bastard !" cries the vicar.

RIP Dave Allen you funny bastard.

Very nice collect there, yokel. One of life's little bonuses. Score one for the good guys.

Yes indeed, what a funny bastard. I was wondering the other day if it was just some sentimental or romantic notion that makes my perception of those many belly laughs Dave Allen afforded me as a 10 year old in the late 70's so much funnier than they actually were. But the many wonderful tributes to the great man by a bunch of people on this board whose opinions I greatly respect makes my side-splitting memories of Dave Allen At Large seem truly authentic.

If ever he pops up on payTV or even free-to-air any time in the future, would someone do us all a favour and immediately bring it to our attention.

RIP Dave.
