Sad to hear that Jack has passed away. Great North man who was a TV football pioneer as a commentator and expert on World of Sport. RIP Jack and condolences to his family.

Ah the good old days of World Of Sport - The North connection now gone. Ron Casey and now the sad news about Jack Edwards. Watching the Big League on a saturday night and listening to the dulcitones of Jack will forever be remembered by me. RIP Jack Edwards - a shinboner to the core

You know that Jack sat in the Com Box during the 1977 Grandfinal Draw and never said a word on air.....loved his commentary during North games......one in particular when North came from Nowhere in the last qtr to beat Carlton at Princess Park under John Kennedy....you could tell he was a North man...ha...Peter McKenna was also pretty keem to see North get up that day too.

That's right. You wouldn't know he was there until Peter Ewen says at the end something like "I'm sitting between Lou, a great Collingwood champion, and Jack Edwards, a great North champion. I'm completely unbiased. We're all even....it's a tie!!"

Vale Jack.

IIRC, Michael Williamson used to call him Bones. Tall for his day and slim, with very neat hair.

He was a terrific defender and iirc, captain-coached Coburg in the VFA too. Maybe he coached and didn't play for Coburg. It was a looong time ago.

From the AustralianFootball website:

Although it would probably be fair to suggest that he would go on to enjoy somewhat greater fame as a TV football commentator, North Melbourne's Jack Edwards also enjoyed a by no means inauspicious career as a VFL footballer. Recruited from West Brunswick Juniors, he made his league debut in 1951 and, after struggling to carve out a niche for himself at first, went on to total 115 senior games over the next nine seasons. By 1956 he had developed into a fine full back, whose ultra-reliability more than compensated for any perceived lack of class; he won North's club champion award that year, and went on to round off his playing career in style by representing the VFL for the first time in his final league season. In 1961 and 1962, Jack Edwards coached VFA 1st division club Coburg, getting the side as far as the preliminary final in the latter season. He later spent the 1969 to 1971 seasons coaching Brunswick.
