Vale Matthew Rendall
The wonderful Fitzroy captain and Brisbane Bear player passed away this afternoon after suffering a cardiac arrest on Sunday. Matt was one of my favourite Roy boys and his name and number was woven across my duffel coat. Always happy to chat when seen at any Fitzroy functions. My heart is truely broken today. Gone far too soon. Love to his family.

Matty was a great player and leader and in my lifetime was the best ruckman to play for the Lions. So sad to think he is gone.
Devastating news ,so sudden.

We used to say Matty was the biggest rover in the League. Just had amazing agility for a guy 6'8.

Very sad. Thinking of his family and many friends.

Was at the junction oval when we played North Melbourne and as a ruckman and if my memory serves me correctly i swear he kicked 8 or 9 goals in this game when we smashed north melbourne.
Gave his all everytime he ran onto the ground.
R.I.P
Was talking about this game at the footy last Friday. I thought he kicked Seven, someone said 9. Checked just now , he kicked 8 😁

This is a great read for any old royboys.

There comes a time in your life when the sportstars of your childhood slowly begin to pass away. It makes you sit up and take notice. Unfortunately for me and cricket it was Dean Jones, way too soon. Matt Rendell is my first Royboy. As a young kid, when you saw him, he was giant of a man.
RIP

The club we hold so dear,
Premiers, we'll be this year!

Didn't realise Dean Jones had died - Dean at 59, Warnie at 52, Matt at 64 and all from heart attacks. :(

Really gets your mind ticking over when people around your age start dying.. eg. Rendell, Shane Warne, Andrew Symonds, Dean Jones, Paul Green.

From that game when Matt kicked 8 goals against North in 83 we also have Salty Parish and Garry Sidebottom no longer with us.

Its a bit scary when your heroes from when you were a kid start to go. You realise you're getting older quicker than you'd like to.

Bundy was a ripping player. Gave heart and soul. He played as a gangly full forward in 1981 while Fitzroy's first ruckman in Ron Alexander was still at the club, but that was an eye to the future as he belonged in the ruck and did so from 1982 onwards. If you want to see some highlights, try to find a game in 1983 on youtube where the Roys played North at the Junction. Matt hadn't kicked a goal in 16 previous games. Not one. He kicked 8 in that game, squashing Brownlow Medallist Gary Dempsey in the process. Its actually an amazing game of footy. Apart from being a great player, Matt also got Fitzroy as a club, and the people around it. Happy to have photos and autographs with kids, and say hello to all the supporters. The Club batted above its average, with reduced resources. He was a great leader during tough times. Financially stuffed, but playing finals. That probably couldn't happen today.

His speech at the induction into the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame was a ripper. Hardly spoke about himself.

If you're too young to remember, then to get a feel for him as a footballer, he was very much like Oscar Mc. That has only occured to me over the last couple of days when seeing highlights packages. Similar kicking style in terms of lifting the front of the ball up before dropping it for the drop punt. Gangly but absolutely effective. Runs all days, remains mobile all game - Matt rucked virtually all match, just like the Big O almost seems to do. Gives his all for the entire match. Doesn't give up.

Thanks to Matt Rendell, for what he did for our club back in the day.

In his two best and fairest seasons he would win the ruck contests, mark all over the ground but also play as an extra mid fielder. He was so far in front in Fitzroy's Best and Fairest counts and we had good teams in those years.

Did his shoulder (IIRC) and never quite reached those heights again. Became merely a good ruckman rather then the best in Australia.

A man of football.

We observed a minutes silence for Matt Rendell at the Brunswick Street Oval, prior to Fitzroy’s game against Old Geelong. A sombre occasion.
