It's a sad day for the Collingwood Football Club with the great Ron Richards passing away at age 85.

RIP Ron.:(

The Collingwood Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing today of one of its most revered figures, Ron Richards.

The 1953 premiership star, who went on to serve the club as a coach, match committee chairman and director, lost an extended battle with illness in the early hours of this morning. He was 85 years of age.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire described Richards as a Magpie royal, a man who was able to step out from the considerable shadow of his celebrated older brother, Lou, by helping to guide Collingwood for decades.

“In the rich history of the Collingwood Football Club, Ron Richards will always be known as one of its greatest servants,” McGuire said.

Shattered, arguably our greatest clubman, he gave so much of himself to this club in any capacity we asked of him. Thanks for your service & passion.

A truly great Magpie & condolences go to his family.

Vale Ron Richards.

Truly a great servant to our wonderful club who played 143 games and kicked 114 goals including being an intregral player in the 1953 premiership. Also an assistant coach, match committeeman chairman and board member.

Part of the greatest football dynasty of any VFL/AFL club - the Pannam/Richards families who contributed 930 games/1125 goals/8 premierships.

Vale Ron

Was lucky enough to sit with him on a couple of occasions in recent years at Collingwood matches. Fantastic bloke very friendly. Asked him about his career which he didn't mind discussing at all. When I asked about the coaching he said he had wanted to coach the seniors and if he had there was no doubt we would have won a couple of flags. Said he was a lot better than Rose, Mann , Hafey et al. Said it with a twinkle in his eye but definitely meant it at the same time.

Great character and a great life lived

Onya Ronny

My sincerest condolences to the Richard's family at the passing of Ron. A great clubman that proved his worth in every aspect of CFC, from playing to coaching to administration. And special wishes to Lou, whilst it will hit him hard, lets hope he has many more seasons with us yet. Vale Ronnie.

RIP Ron, such a sad day for his family and the Colligwood FC. Condolences to all, side by side.

Will always remember Sandy Roberts piece of commentary in 1990 "Ronnie Richards who's been involved in so many of their tragedies (the Colliwobbles) is almost in tears".What strength of character he had to keep the club going in such dark times.
