eyy just wondering how van rheenan is goin went to school with him and curious on his progress and how use rate him ? will he make it onto the senior list ? just a general overview of what use think really .. thanks

He's a big unit, but still very raw. He played most of 2007 in the Scorps reserves. He'd be a couple of years away from senior footy at best I'd think.

Still, with King, Gardner and Kosi to practice against, and Madden as ruck coach, he couldn't ask for a much better learning environment.

He's a very long term prospect.

He'll be given every possible opportunity to develop at the Scorpions but it would be unfair to place any expectations on him at this stage.

if he and mc evoy develop well we could be set for a good 8-10 years mcevoy will play seniors first out of the two he is better and a better size and can play forward so he is more versitile so yeah can't wait our club is getting on track club has massive raps on allen and they a;so like armitage i am putting money he will be in top 5 for rising star

I hope he succeeds in the AFL, because clearly if he went to the same school as you did, he can't read or write properly.

I believe he was leading the training session yesterday (based on things I half heard while there), so he could be some good leadership material - if he can actually play footy, that is.

Once Gardiner and King retire, and Rix is delisted. McEvoy and Van Rheenen will be 'of age', so unless we draft someone else to be a ruckman, use Koschitzke, retain Rix, or develop Haretuku as a ruck instead of a key forward/back - none of which are ideal, VR will be kept until we can draft and develop someone else.

I'm not sure of the desire to develop a ruckman unless you know they have talent (McEvoy). Collingwood imo have done the right thing and put a decent bid on the table to get a developed ruckman which has shown ability and durability (Wood).

The saints have done well to get Gardiner (even though there were feet trouble) and King, and I think this is what we should be doing i.e. actively targeting seasoned ruckmen. The saints may have to make a decision on Van Rheenan at the end of this year.

Well, we can go that line, and scavange off of other clubs' development of their rucks. Or, we can develop them ourselves with a top-class ruck coach and a good development coach, so that when they DO become good ruckmen, they feel a devotion to the club that has put them there. I think otherwise we run the risk of getting people who either feel mixed loyalties, have been dumped by their club, who have injury concerns, or who are just mercs.

Take Blake and Gardiner as two prime examples. I both see them working out, but that will be IN SPITE of one of them coming from being dumped by his club for drug-related attitude problems and seriously dodgy feet, and the other one coming from being dumped by the club he once captained after just winning the premiership! Both of them are professionals, and I expect they'll do fine... but I'd take a man who has gone through thick and thin within the Scorps'n'Saints to get his spot, and who'll die before he lets down the teammates or coaches who have invested in him.

Apparently their school teaches phoenetics instead of English. I especially loved "use". Made my day.

Jeff Fenech has a lot to answer for.

It seems a signficiant investment (a spot on an AFL list) unless you have some confidence they will make it. There's so many examples of ruckmen doing well when changing clubs - and someone like Ben Hudson I'm sure will also make a go of it. We nearly pinched White and Cox in years gone by - it can be done.

People like Rix and Blake give it their all (as you've alluded to potentially with Van Rheenan), but cop heaps on BigFooty. The big heart doesn't seem to count, but your sentiment is acknowledged (as an obvious preference but only if they have the talent to be No 1 or 2 ruckmen).

thanks for the information fellas.. didnt know i had to use perfect english and sentence structure on a big footy, but i guess your always going to get a few wise guys trying to prove their intelligence..

Couldn't resist :D

Ouch dude, that's pretty cold...

punchon wavos be there!

i went to school with him too!! another naz boy i assume??...my younger bro was in his year, i was with his sisters age a few years up...tall kids those van rheenans!

saw luke a few weeks back, i tell ya what, hes a big lad now -tank...tells me he's been on the weights alot more this pre season! Cant miss him around wavos! what a unit! ;)

Hes a very commited bloke, does alot of work off the track. Back in high school he did the 5am-6am benchpress sessions before school, whilst the rest of us would try get every last bit of sleep we could!

Its ironic, last year in one of his only games in the VFL seniors (matty clarke got injured), Luke played against King, got owned by King and the cats, Kingy walked into a premiership side a few weeks later, come 2008 their team mates!!

Like any ruckman, needs time to develop although it really depends how much the saints want to invest in the kid, could prove his worth, not anytime soon i suspect, prediction is about 2-3 years before he hits the big league IF hes good enough that is, needs to show something this year otherwise i reckon he could get chopped from the rookie list.

Thoughts about the boy from the intra-club game?

Competed in less than a handful of Ruck contests, but played up forward for the Rookie/VFL team and contested very well, can read the play and kicked the intra-club goal of the century. It was a 40m sprint, scooped the ball from the ground, turned and snapped over the shoulder from deep in the pocket. I just hope that isn't the highlight of his career like TS40's goal against Brisbane was.

Plenty of exciting things to come from the young bloke. Watch for elevation in '08 if King or Gardiner go down, or '09 (Rix delisted).

I arrived during the second quarter and missed that goal.

He's still a very long term prospect but it's pleasing to see that he's showing some promising signs.
