Travis showed plenty last week with his deft touches, but yesterday was very much a repeat of much of the rest of the year. My main qualms have been his very selective use of pace, his lack of urgency at times, his hot-and-cold kicking, and his moments of getting lost in the play.

And the thing about this point is, you could mount an argument for it not being based on injury and fitness. I mean, guys like Kelly, Mackie and Ling, who would have had a substantial fitness base from playing all season, lack urgency and have hot-and-cold kicking.

Chappy, Ablett and Rooke on the other hand, well they'd play on one leg if they had to and still show more than half our list.

One word..... Dud! :thumbsd:

He is an outside player of the worst sort. Great if you want flashy players like Davey, though I doubt he's even half as good. Even then players like Davey wont get the job done on big days.

He's young, but gee he has just so much to learn.... he gets lost very easily in play, has a poor running style (is fast though) which has probably contributed to his injury problems, is a complete outside player almost to the point of looking gutless and just looks so raw that he's probably 3-4 yrs away at least. Given that he is homesick and clearly not comfortable in Geelong he probably wont be with us by the time he bears fruit, if any.

I just think we have a dud on our hands. I'm quite concerned. The only thing I saw during the VFL finals that impressed me was that he has a nice kick.

I think the best thing would be to package him up with Kingsley and hope we can fool another club into taking him., before the truth gets out.

Even a straight swap for Moloney would be good.

Or what about packaging him with pick 7 and trading for pick 3 or 4. Who knows we could even be lucky enough to get Gumbleton.

The first 3 goals (4 if kent hadn't missed from the goal square) that he set up in the semi and the 1 he kicked himself didn't impress you? That coming off an injury riddled season and without any match fitness really impressed me.
If you had ever played the game which you obiously haven't, you would know how hard it is to come into a team and fit in straight away, let alone dominate a quarter of finals football when you are the youngest player on the ground.
Homesick! Haha if he was so homesick why didnt he take the week break like alot of other players and go home straight after the GF, instead of staying in Geelong and continuing to build his fitness. If you belive everything you read in the G addy I would say that you are the only dud we have on our hands and I'm quite concerned about your mental capacity.

Varcoe can play, he needs time and luck. I can tell you that Richmond had him earmarked with our first pick last year but we decided against him and went for Oakley-Nicholls only after our club saw the medical reports for him. The risk isn't that he cant play coz hes rubbish, the risk is he wont play because of the injury.

Thats bull$#!t i know Francis Jackson who was part of the recruiting team down there. He read out the names on draft day. They only wanted Dowler or Oakley-Nicholls they only chose not to go with Dowler because of his medical report. TOOOOOL

lol

you are wrong my friend. the tiges wanted one of Dowler or Ryder and they were gone, they decided to take the a midfielder instead, they had 3 names, 1st was Varcoe, 2nd was Oakley Nicholls and 3rd was Dempsey who went to Essendon. Oakley Nicholls was taken because RFC couldnt risk Varcoe.

PS- Richmond didnt not go with Dowler because of his injury, they missed him coz Hawthorn had an earlier pick...

It was reported on the afl.com.au draft broadcast last year IIRC, they said that Richmond told Geelong that they did well in getting Varcoe at #15, because they were deciding b/w him and Oakley Nicholls at #8.

He's an outside player, great for the 5 sec clip on the 6pm news but you don't win premierships with players like that.

Tell that to Craig Bradley (the consumate outside player and, as much as I disliked him, a champion player). I think this is exactly the type of player that Geelong needs. I for one am hoping that Varcoe becomes a champion outside player and gives us many 5 sec clips AND premierships.

Nathan Buckley is another outside player, whose definition of a hard ball is if the ball bounces in front of him when it's handballed to him. :p Maybe that's why Ling has had so much success on him over his career. They both like hanging out the back of the pack for a cheap stat.

If all our midfielders are in the pack then where does our run come from, are you trying to tell us that Buckley WAS not a damaging player. A clearance comes from a strong in and under player or ruckman passing to a player on the outskirts of a pack that can then either run and carry or effectively kick the ball.

NB: I wish to state that Ling can currently not do either.
