Am interested to hear peoples thoughts on this bloke. People gave him big raps when he was drafted but watching him in the VFL he seemed very soft and possibly a little lost. Thoughts?

He has been well discussed in this forum but what you have to remember about travis is that he came into the season this year after missing a whole year of football and had no preseason at all. Some people have been critical of him but given where he has come from his year has been respectable. All the coaching staff woul have wanted from him was to get some football under his belt this year. Now he has an opportunity to get a full preseason training behind hime and come out next year and play a bit more like we think/hope he can. I wouldn't say he is soft, he is too small to be a in the pack type player, but he should be the player that gets the feed off and uses his speed and skill to devastating effect. The talk about him before he did his ankles was that this boy can really play and is a bit like Davey. So I hope we can all just get off his back and give him the chance to prove if he has the goods or not. 2007 is his year to show some marked improvement with hopefully at least half a dozen games in the seniors by the end.

I agree. He is too much of a front runner.

Umm, exactly.

I can see Varcoe either going two ways. He will either be a genuine star for the cats, or he will not get a game and will be chucked out at the end of the season. Let's hope that he can prove himself this year. I saw him kick a few freakish goals and showed a bit of promise, but if his 1st year had to be weighed up, he would have to be considered a bit of a failure.

Has not shown anything near his potential, and is soft. Too many times I've seen him just hanging around packs. We don't need any more players like that. Even if he is just a midget, he should still put his body over the football. It seems to me that he has got into the habit of being merely a front runner and is milking his 'ankles' for all they are worth. If, as I suspect he has fallen into the habit of, and it has become second nature for him to pull out of contests, then his days are numbered.

Show something this year, or pack your bags and start planning ur next NT fishing trip.

I think he has at least 2 more years on the list before even being considered a failure.
1. He is at the bottom of his age bracket for his draft year. So young compared to most that were drafted last year. Body and confidence will take a little while.

2. had his foot trodden on in his 2nd SANFL seniors game and missed the rest of the season and some of last preseason (almost a year out of the game) so was lacking fitness. The injury I think was to the ligaments in the foot (maybe tore away from the bone?). So hopefully doesn't have long term affects like an ankle might (SJ)

3. lack of preseason caused him to pick up a few soft tissue injuries in 2006 so was restricted a little there as well.

Full preseason and should be a much better player next year. Even if he doesn't push into the top 22 everygame I would expect him to show glimpses of what he is capable of. He will be fighting S.Johnson, P.Chapman, G.Ablett and M.Stokes for that small forward role so it isn't going to be easy for him.

agree asty,
how can this bloke be a failure when he hasn't had a pre season and was no where near the fitness levels required to play at the highest level, he isnt going to be a pack type player and like alot of the freakish aboriginal players will go missing at times but in 2-3 yrs i feel we will be seeing a very exciting player, are we all going to say Hawkings is no good if he plays only a handful of games next year, give these kids are chance esp the ones that have had injury and pre season problems, i really like varcoe and believe he has some magical talents

I am glad you are not on the selection panel. Varcoe is really young and has the potential to be a great player. Given how he has come into this year and the fact that he has had some soft tissue injuries along the way (from being under-done) then rating his year as a failure is simplistic and shows a total lack if understanding of the process involved into getting a 18yo to become an AFL player. Varcoe has at least another 2 years before they would consider delisting him (an unlikely event IMO) and he has to spend the next few years working on his fitness and body (ie bulking up a little) and then we might begin to see a champion emerge.

Some people get disappointed if they don't see instant stardom from a "rated" draftee. But it often takes about 25 games of senior footy before they begin to make their mark and that can take 2-3 years to achieve in the beginning of a career. Give the kid a go, he is the future. He was playing senoir SANFL footy at 17. This kid has talent.

Spot on. Injured young kid. Geeze Im sick of knobs on this website describing young up and comers as failures. At the same age Davey was in the twos in the VFL or perhaps that was the following year.

Lets have a look at TV at the end of the 2008 season, that will be 3 years half the time that Koula, McCarthy and co have had to prove their worth or lack of. God I am worried that tools are gunna expect the tomahawk to kick 70 goals in his first or second season

Same old story, build the kids up before they've even played a game, then tear them down before they've had a chance to succeed. One of the things we geelong supporters do well.:D

True he's young, and true he's injured. But a lot of people on this site have pencilled him into our best midfield in a couple of years, while he has shown absolutely nothing so far. While I'm not saying they should cut him, he still has to improve markedly next year.

The Kid missed a season and a pre season
Was only ever going to get experience this season. When fit was earmarked as a top 10 pick. Too many tool son this site expect our picks to be walk up gods EG Nabblet and Tom H.

The sooner some of you are out of Nappies and learn wht the real world is like the better.
