I like how he read packs and knows where the ball will come out but
If he is taken out of the team it should only be for Chapman because Stokes also deserves his spot. Varcoe should never be dropped for H or Charlie!!

Varcoe's better than Ronnie Burns could ever wish to be. Don't think Ronnie had a defensive bone in his body.
yeah l hear ya and Varcoe can kick with both feet unlike ronnie

That comment is horse shit. He is getting a game on merit and is borderline for our best 22. Chapman is a star so obviously he comes into the side. I can't see a fringe player like Byrnes taking his spot.
Don't really see why a comment would be horse manure because it doesn't agree with yours DanA.
I actually agree with most of Sir Rooke's post.
It is great to see some of the stuff Varcoe does and I think it augurs well for the future of the club. If he was playing for, say Richmond, he would be a stand up start. That would apply for a few other teams as well.
However if you are a fair dinkum top 4 side (and we might well be), then all 22 have to do a bit more than "apply great defensive pressure in the forward half and kick the odd goal". We are finally in the position that we have good depth at the club and some pretty handy players are missing out on a run in the ones on a weekly basis.
As promising as Varcoe may be, he is in the early stages of his apprenticeship and will still spend time in the twos honing his skills and developing his strength.

I would go as far to say that Varcoe has contributed to, on average, around 5 goals a game through goals kicked, direct assists and pressure causing goals.

If he is to be dropped, tell me how those 5 goals will be replaced.

His likely replacement is Chapman. Do you really think he's worth more goals to the side then Chappy? I mean, Varcoe's filling a very niche role at the moment, one that (arguably) no other player in the side or indeed the list has shown they're capable of filling, but I would think that Chappy's skill and hardness all around the ground would make up for Varcoe's absence.

He ain't doing too bad for a 19-year old. Enough said. Seems like some folks are expecting the world out of these kids, but they're still learning. Trav does a lot of great stuff in the forward line even though he might be a little light and outmuscled in contests at times. No cause to start calling for his omission, really. He is playing his role very nicely.

To me it seems rediculous and an insult to Varcoe to say he has not earn't his spot in a team looking to make finals if not the top 4. Why is Geelong not playing there best 22 every week? Can you honestly say that there was someone that Varcoe was keeping out that should have been in the team?

I also agree with some of what he said, I just thought that partuclar line was, as you said horse manure. Do you agree with the line I highlighted?

Have to agree with SirRooke unfortunately, a lot of very poor efforts mixed in with his better ones. Tackles well when the opportunities there and puts pressure on at times but some of his "efforts" in body on body situations is well below the accepted level.

I commented on it a couple of times during the Eagles game, one in particular where he had a chance to tackle an Eagles player who had the ball but virtually gave up the contest and turned his back on another player who came in to shepherd, nowhere near good enough if he wants to be playing at the elite level.

I realise he's only young, and lightly framed, but you can't pick and choose which contests you're going to go hard at. Could probably use Davey from Essendon as an example of a similar type player, and Varcoe is so far behind him at the moment there's no real comparison.

Having said all that I still believe he has a lot going for him as others have pointed out, going to be a very good player when he overcomes his bad traits, but with Chapman, Harley and Mackie to fit back into the side, plus Hawkins sooner rather then later, think Varcoes going to find it very hard to keep his spot.

Chappy will walk straight into this side when ready. That doesn't mean that it's Varcoe that has to make way.

Hunt, Selwood (rest), DJ (unlucky) and Rooke (inj) are all a chance to miss.

I think Varcoe has done everything asked of him....he add's a spark to our forwardline (along with the inclusion of SJ). The defensive pressure he provides - running down the defense in the style of Aaron / Elwyn Davey, Pearce etc - is exactly what we've needed especially now that we've got several KPF (of which we've been screaming for for years!). We have one of the most potent forwardlines in the league...when, in the recent past, have we had so many selection dilemas in our forwardline? Let alone our whole team! Chappy will walk staright back in...he's all class. Unlucky for the one that he replaces! Good signs though for GFC!!

My first BF submission!! Have been reading the threads for a year or so now and thought it time to commit my thoughts...Good to be here, and good to see the boys performing!

I will fess up to being one of those tools who didn't think Varcoe wouldn't make it - didn't see anything much in the VFL that reflects the skills that we are seeing this year - particularly the defensive pressure.

Very glad to be proved wrong and will wear my VDT ("Varoe doubting tool") status in shame.;)

Think he needs to build stamina, as his best stuff has been in first halfs, however you would expect this of a 19yo. Hopefully can play in the middle, off wing in future.

Looking forward to having derka derka out on the field with varcoe, they both seem to be really exciting players.

Varcoe played a great game on saturday, his pressure and attack at the ball and man are excellent. Saying that if chapmans in, then he might have to sit this week out. Not fair on him or prismall.

That line was "Frankly, he is only getting a game atm on potential and for investment, nothing more."
Yes DanA, I think that comment is spot on.
