I have a stereo that is capable of playing VCDs but I have never used this feature. Are many VCDs available for hire or do they need to be purchased? Also can I connect the stereo to an input on the TV directly?

Not many VCD's availiable.

If you into Anime (cartoons from Japan, my brother watches them all the time  ) there are plenty.

Some CD's that include video clips come in the form of VCD, such as Foo Fighters Nothing To Lose w/ Michael Klim on the front has a VCD, but apart from that, there not too many about...

vcd's.. i got plenty...
they are bountiful in most asian countries...
pirated.. legit...

quality is a little less than VHS... very cheap...

u mean connect the tv output, so sound comes out of your stereo speakers?

What output device do usually use do display VCDs (i.e. TV like you would with a playstation or do you use a computer). I have no idea about how VCDs work. Also what is the capacity of a VCD? Can you watch full length movies or just short video clips? Thanks for your replies.

ah, sorry.. should have read your Q properly..

output device.. not too sure..
i watch my vcds on my computer.. others use a DVD player, or a VCD player (looks like a fat cd discman)..

i'm pretty sure it would be similar to a VCR connection...

VCDs i've got.. (in my latest batch from malaysia, got harry potter, the others, spy game, the one, original sin, oceans 11.. all video cam pirate jobs.. as these are pirate ones, quality can vary.. this batch is not too bad).. one full length movie comes on 2 cds... so, gotta do a disc change halfway thru the movie...

in asia, most HMV, eg. music shops sell the legit VCD's...
cost around aud$10 compared to a pirate copy for about aud$2..

Never bought any VCD's. I just download the movie in AVI or MPG and let Nero convert them to either SVCD or VCD. Depending on how it's compressed some VCD's are better than the **** that is VHS.

As for capacity, most I've got go for an hour per disk. Same as audio cd.

coxon, I don't kno how you can stand watching them when they have been taped using a handy cam. I'd rather wait for it to come of DVD!

I haven't ever bought a VCD but I am looking to buy the STARS WARS trilogy as DVD reportedly won't come out until 2006:(.

Really? I thought I saw it in Myer late last year. But that might have just been Episode 1. I've got all 4 eps on video, so I didn't pay that much attention. Why would they be delaying their release that long?

Lucas says he is too busy filming Ep.II and Ep.III to do the Original Trilogy DVD's. He wants to put in lots special features and deleted scenes, interviews etc, so he needs time to do that.

hes also reportedly filmed some extra scenes for the original trilogy that will be added later which will tie up a few things being done in episodes 1 to 3.

so lethal.. have u made any dvd rips yet?
i better do a search on the info... hire some dvds... rip the dvd info from disc... encoding to divx.. then burn to cd's or store on hdd... (eg. like an cd-mp3 process)... but, heard it takes hours... 7, 8 hr process.. ah fook..

i havent really thought about it, i find it hard to get much free time lately, and then when uni goes back in march then ill definately have no time
this might sound funny, but i prefer to buy dvds rather than watch burnt ones, just the way it is i guess:) :)

VCD's pretty much don't exist. Except the ones that are just cheap pirated flicks with s**ty pictures!

DVD has taken over! Superior in every way!
