What were u going for? Vet? Medicine? engineering? Physio?

I know in WA Physio is 96, Vet 98 etc, yet u dont CLEARLY get in with 98.3??? gees!

well, to get into medicine in UNSW or newcastle uni its like 99.6 you need. i myself got 98.0 UAI and got in the course i wanted with a few marks to spare luckily. pretty stoked since my estimated was 93.

That's dumb. Somebody on 70 would not excel as a doc, lawyer etc than somebody who got 99? More full fee spots needed.

thats right, lets reserve all the top jobs for the rich

As opposed to a system that discriminates b/w 99 and 96 ?
I said "more" as opposed to "only". There are things such as deferred loans etc.
Deregulate.

why should someone get a place over someone who works harder simply because they are rich enough to afford it?

Likewise, why should they be denied a spot if they have the means. Your use of "rich" is too flippant. Many parents from working class families send their kids to private schools. Why should this door close at the tertiary level? Full fee students also create local positions, as happens with OS students now. You can have both. They don't take any positions nor do anything "over" students who work harder.

schools are quite different. private schools may offer more in terms of extra curricular activities etc, but everyone has the opportunity to do well in the VCE/HSC if they are willing to work hard enough. fee paying at uni is totally different. here, education is denied to those who work harder than the guy who can afford to get in the the course.

Not if a non-fee posi is created for every fee paying posi. Demand for fee paying would be so high that there would be many that miss out regardless, and the cut off will probably be in the 96 range. Not denying those who choose not to pay (as opposed to "poor"), they can still excel and go in through the normal process. Mind you if the cut off is at 99 now, it would suggest that either the education standard has dropped or less posis are available. Full fee is the saviour.

the 99 is directly linked to the popularity of the course mainly. a subject like latin might be just as hard as veterinary science, but is less popular. hence a lower VCE score is required coz less people want to do it.

i had the misfortune of doing latin right up until year 10, until i realised there were really one job that had any use for it, and that was a latin teacher.
