To be fair, it would take them another 100 years to legitimately win 6 more on their own.
I think such a move might just push me over the edge as far as following AFL goes.
I put up with the “fixture”.
I put up with the inconsistent on field rules from match to match.
I put up with the week to week tweaking of the rules, confusing us all.
I put up with the bonuses given to underperforming clubs.
I put up with the ridiculous prices to go to the footy and eat.

But should I put up with the rewriting of history?
No. A bridge to far.

P.S. wonder if Port are mounting a case
.

This wasn't started by Carlton, but pushed by that pig of a club Geelong, its been killing them for years that they are way down the premiership ladder and this is a backdoor way to rocket right up there. And leaving it to the Afl commission to rewrite history is perfect for them to give Eddie a whack as he was against this years ago when Geelong first tried to get this through

What’s this about? What are the arguments for and against?
I have a bunch of non -Collingwood mates and what they are talking about sounds reasonable. I need some arguments to combat this attack on our religion. Why are Carlton claiming 22 and the Bombers 20 premiership, how do I counter their arguments. Help!

Can you imagine what footy was like in 1870? The game was barely invented, anyone could rock up and get a game for Collingwood, they probably had different shaped and sized goal posts at every ground and even the footy was probably stuffed with wool. It bears no relevance to the modern premiership tally.

Then they’d have to add all the Collingwood premierships I won playing in my socks with a balloon in my loungeroom as a kid, trying not to make too much noise lest my Dad who worked nights get woken up, and start beating us senseless.

You need to find better mates as there's nothing reasonable to what Carter from Geelong is proposing from a league perspective.

He wants to add flags won between 1870 and 1896 to the overall tally despite them being won a in a completely different competition, one the inaugural VFL clubs chose to breakaway from and one that ran along side and in competition to the VFL to varying strengths until the 1980s. In the paywalled news article (link on this facebook page seems to bypass it) Carter audaciously claims that the current method is wrong - from a club perspective he's correct, but from a league perspective he's completely wrong for the reason I mentioned above.

Here's McGuire's view - he's right.

Non debate really.

The AFL née VFL started as its own stand alone competition in 1897.
Forever more football history was judged from there.

The VFA continued after the breakaway VFL and plugged along sometimes with quality sometimes in a poor state.
But after 1897 it became the lesser competition.

The sneaking agenda by people like Colin Carter is to use the red rag to the public of Eddie McGuire and Collingwood to make his case. Because annoying Collingwood and Ed is their trump card.

And it will allow clubs to add premierships to their number from the non VFL.

Won’t happen. I’m doubtful.

Be a nasty way of re-writing history.

Follow self interest, it’s the horse that’s trying.

To my (biased) mind, there is no way it can get up because the leagues ran parallel to one another. Completely different to say the VAFA which was originally the MJFA, but changed its name (like VFL to AFL).

VFA was a rival competition. For this submission to get up, does that mean the VFA has to not count premierships won prior to the establishment of the VFL - because those flags have been "acquired" by the AFL/VFL?

This is correct.
A name change is one thing as it is a lineal continuation.

But a break away competition side by side, just makes no sense.

That and over turning 100 plus years of history keeping that the VFL / AFL is its own history seems weird in the extreme.

My own guess is their is a naked self interest of a flag count for the proposers. (And they’ll use Eddie as their red rag.)
