VFL pick ups

Hello everyone. Seeing I've made one terrible thread, that the mods haven't deleted despite my request!! .... I'll make another!!

Tomorrow after the rookie draft there will be a number of 18 year olds who feel like they're at least good enough for a club to have had a look at them as a rookie. They may wish to play VFL in the hope that they will get noticed for a future draft.

How do they go about getting on a VFL list. Obviously there is no draft. Is there zoning? Is it more common for players to be invited to play at a club or for players to approach the club? Are their any good "walking in off the street stories" like Meldrum did for Carlton?

There were apparently a few good "walking off the street" stories at Frankston this year, including Leigh Osbourne, who apparently had a terrific year in the VFL, after playing for Ringwood or something, last year. I hear he just walked in off the street and asked if he could train with them and was quickly added to their list.

First thing is that the Player's Managers usually organise for them to train with a State League club. I believe that each VFL club is limited to x number of TAC club players, who are outside their area/zone.

Pretty sure Osborne was a good TAC cup player as well.

I have a nephew from a bush community, Lajamanu, who is thinking of coming to Melbourne to play footy. Super talented, great skills and amazing hands. Is probably close to 190cm and can pick up the ball close to full speed and put it on his boot in a flash, reminds me of a couple of goals Cotchin kicked. He has never worked on his fitness and if a club of that sort of standard got their hands on him and he pulled his finger out he could be anything, I think.

He definitely wasn't.

Was about 160cm tall and stick thin. A trier though.
