with GC having the first 100 picks in this year draft and also getting to hand pick the best 17 year olds from last year before this years draft, the chances of teams finding quality after their first pick is greatly diminished.

with the emmergance of players like barlow, silgagni, podsiadly, nahas and even jammo and sam mitchell, it may be wise to try and nab a few players from the lower leagues who have proved that they are likely to make the step up to the big time.

are there any players from the vfl which may be worth having a look at for a rookie selection, or maybe even a late draft pick?

arrowsmith showed a bit of promise in the intraclub match at the start of the season, and has had a decent season averaging a goal a game playing more a midfielf role. is he worth rookieing and playing as a medium forward to snare a goal or two?

saad has been solid this year and had a few decent bags throughout the season, worth a rookie spot?

and from the sounds of things, faulks is a solid defender with previous experience on an afl list.

do any of you who follow the vfl rather closely think there are any players worth a shot?

I'm rather disappointed we didn't get Silvagni, given the family history and all, he's a goer. The recruiters will definitely have a close look this year from all clubs, so it's going to be tough.

Iccabotchi (not idea how to spell his name) seems to be in the best everyweek. Ex St bernards and Collingwood player is he worthy of a spot?

We probably won't have to be looking to hard for VFL talent though as we aren't losing anyone to retirement.

Seeing as we don't have many decent picks in a weak draft we will probably just pick up the 3 minimum drafees. So we will likely only have around 4 delistings.

The players that look to be definately on the way out are
-Wiggins
-Fisher

Maybes
-Johnson
-Tiller
-Browne?

Sam Jacobs should get a game on an afl list soon. Dominated yesterday.

Arrowsmith and Iacobucci absolutely butcher the ball. Good in some aspects of their game but skills are not good enough for us at our stage of the side's development. Hope Arrowsmith gets picked up in this draft though, remember seeing an article that he has put his name in :thumbsu:

Saad should get rookied at least by an AFL club

The weak draft stuff is a little misleading.

While certainly some top-end talent will be gone before we get a chance at them, taking a look over the BF Trial Phantom Draft will give you an idea about how deep this draft actually runs. If this had not been the draft with concessions we would all be stoked at how much talent is running around

Do you rate Faulks & Kyle Hartigan? What are their chances of making it on an AFL list?

Watched Hartigan today, dominated on a losing side.. Uses it well, and does all the things a defender should do..

I am not completely sold on the under developed Faulks, is certainly dominating at VFL level, but there are not really any tall forwards (AFL listed or VFL listed) that are dominating apart from Matt Little whom is already on his (Faulks) team.

Smith will be the next Barlow because there's just another there waiting to be drafted...

What's the view on Tyson Thomas who is just 20 and reportedly quick?

http://www.northernbullants.com.au/pages/gallery/tyson-thomas513.php

If Thomas is quick and can kick, he'd offer us more as a rookie than Ellard.

Isaac Smith was traded during the season from QLD club Redan and has developed quickly.

An article here about the trade

Any ways, here is a post from the Drafts and Tradings board about the 'young guns game' today from Box Hill City oval..

A chance for some young guns to ply there trade in front of AFL recruiters as a whole..

G'day guys

Just got home from the VFL young guns game in which I had the pleasure of catching up with Wall - e from the Adelaide Crows board.

It was a free flowing open affair in which the states best young players were on show. The red team won the game in a canter with young Jaime Elliot kicking 4/5 and Bendigo Bomber Lochlan Delahunty kicking 3 to run out 50 odd point winners.

Not sure on the exact score, didn't write it down :o

Any ways, here are some players that really impressed me:

RED TEAM:

2. Luke Potts, 183cm, 80kg, 20/21, Midfielder, Frankston Dolphins (VFL)

Young Dolphin Luke Potts was given the captaincy duties by coach David Loader and did not disappoint. He uses the ball so well and is a really strong all round midfield prospect with him having purple patches as both an inside midfielder and as an outsider runner. He kept his feet really well and often, when tackled, managed to get the ball away via hand or foot. When he was on the outside he is a gut running player, similar to Hawk Chance Bateman. He has a very good side step and is very quick in the clinches, expect him to have risen up the rankings of recruiters after today's game. Would love to see him at Essendon as a young developing midfielder, certainly has all the tools to work with IMO.

11. Trent Shinners, 192cm, 89kg, 21, Defender, Bendigo Bombers (VFL)

Shinners was probably the clear standout defender on the ground, with him being a stone wall for the red team. His contesting in the marking contest was superb and put his body on the line on numerous occasions. He used the ball really well for such a big man and even used the ball fairly well on the opposite side of his body. Would love to see him in an AFL enviroment.

12. Jamie Elliot, 175cm, 75kg, 21.8.1992, Forward, Murray Bushrangers (TAC)

Elliot was a livewire up forward for the red team, with his forward pressure keeping defenders on there toes. Did not have much of it, but finished with a game high 4 goals, including 3 in a tense 3rd term. He is a small unit, but does not lack in courage, running into an oncoming pack at one stage. Does not mind tackling either, but his lack of body size often saw him thrown off the player. He is not an overly big kick, but is smart enough to put the kick into space.

15. Russell Gabriel, 200cm, 100kg, 21/22, Ruckmen, Frankston Dolphins (VFL)

Gabriel was the dominant big man on the ground, his tap work opposed the young Tom Campbell gave the red team first use of the ball. His second efforts after the ruck contest was first rate as well and was not afraid to put his body in hard against the smaller guys either. He was very good around the ground, and was very good as a link up man for the red team. A feature of his game was his pack marking and took several of these throughout the game. He used the ball relatively well.

16. Tom McDonald, 194cm, 90kg, 18.9.1992, Forward, North Ballarat Rebels (TAC)

Tom did not do much, however, he took several really, really strong contested marks that produced a couple of goals. He positioned himself well and used his long reach to out mark his opponent. Liked the way he went about it today.

17. Lochlan Delahunty, 192cm, 83kg, 26.10.1990, Forward, Bendigo Bombers (VFL)

Lochlan was a good target all day, he did drop a few marks he should of taken, but he also produced a few telling contested marks. His goal kicking does need to improve despite finishing with 3 (possibly should of finished with 4 - 5 - 6). His marking was good, but did not seem to offer much else around the ground though. Would of like to have seen him improve in this area, and work up to the wing.

18. Ben Duscher, 181cm, 80kg, 29.9.1987, Forward/Midfielder, Bendigo Bombers (VFL)

Duscher is a favorite of mine, having seen him quite a few times for Bendigo this year. Played on ball all day and was super all day despite him tiring late in the day. He is very good at keeping his feet in tight and is very strong through the hips, shaking opponents from tackling him. He uses the ball relatively well and is your old fashioned footballer that "just gets the job done".

29. Pat Liston, 185cm, 84kg, 20.1.1991, Midfielder, Collingwood (VFL)

Liston started the game off slowly, then worked into it in the second quarter. Uses the ball really well and got a stack of it in the second quarter. He is a long kick of the ball and a nice size to who was one of the best in the second half.

49. Brendon Fewster, 198cm, 84kg, 2.4.1990, Forward, Coburg Tigers (VFL)

Fewster played forward most of the game and was a very good target for the red team. He took a few really strong contested marks and was also good on the lead, finished the game with a couple of goals and looks a likely type.

WHITE TEAM:

1. William Martinello, 175cm, 79kg, 15.6.1990, Midfielder, Werribee Tigers (VFL)

Martinello started the game in defence but was soon shifted into the midfield where his straight line approach to the game getting the white team back into the game in the second quarter. He is not the biggest bloke going around, but certainly gives 110%. He uses the ball well and more often than not, makes the right decisions with ball in hand. Think he may have a good future.

3. Ben Maloney, 182cm, 82kg, 2.7.1991, Midfielder, Werribee Tigers (VFL)

Maloney was a player that got plenty of the ball today and was one of the best for the white team. He is another smaller player who runs in straight lines at the footy and loves the hard stuff. Used the ball relatively well by both hand and foot.

5. Jonno Nash, 188cm, 85kg, 30.6.1990, Midfielder, Sandringham Zebras (VFL)

Nash was another player who started the game slowly before getting into the game later on. He is a nice size who uses the ball extremely well and is a hard tough player. Not an explosve player but one who tries to bullock his way through a pack. Really liked the way he goes about the game as he tries to take the game on.

7. Nick Bolland, 190cm, 83kg, 27.8.1991, Defender, Sandringham Dragons (TAC)

A rangy type who was very solid in defence. Cut off numerous attacks and used the ball really well. Like the look of him as a third tall defender.

13. Kyle Hartigan, 194cm, 90kg, 11.7.1991, Defender, Werribee Tigers (VFL)

Hartigan was the second best defender behind Shinners today. Was a rock in defence today and did all the team things, spoils, blocks, sheppard and tackles. Used the ball really well and hardly missed a target all day, one player who is certainly right on the radar of AFL recruiters, surely.

27. Shane Tregear, 180cm, 74kg, 27.4.1988, Forward, Sandringham Zebras (VFL)

Tregear was the class player on the ground, with ball in hand he did not miss a target all day. Kicked a couple of long rangy goals to show off that lovely left foot that has been likened to Crow Chris Knights. Played in a variety of positions today, including on ball, wing, and up forward. Went to ground too often however and was the only knock on his game today.

29. Paul Seedsman, ??cm, ??kg, 18?, Forward, Eastern Rangers (TAC)

Seedsman is a rangy third tall type who kicks the ball really, really well. A stick figure of a kid that will need to bulk up to make it at AFL level. Like the way he presents and seems to be a decent mark of the ball. Not sure if he has all the tools to make it as an AFL player but looks a likely type.

Overall, was a very open free flowing game that saw some players put there name forward for AFL selection. The VFL guys were really a class above the TAC guys, however some of the TAC guys grew into the match as it wore on.

Really like the idea, and hopefully it will grow again next year. A lot of recruiters there as well as AFL coaches, had a nice laugh with departing Essendon assistant coach, Ashley Prescott about how well the Bendigo guys were going.

Thanks to Wall - E for the catch up, was a good day out, just glad that I am home now and out of the cold wind.

Thanks guys, any questions, ask away..

Geez, totally forgot about Kyle Hartigan. I really wanted him last year at pick 43 I think. From reports here it sounds like he's doing alright, worth a go?

Funny that this thread was posted today, the same day that I learnt Michael Hibberd is every chance to play for Carlton next year. Carlton have contacted him on numerous occassions and apparently promised to take him in the Draft. Just a waiting game to see if the info is correct i suppose.

I have watched 'Hibbo' plenty of times over the past two years..

Super player who reads the play really well, uses it well and is pretty quick..

Fremantle pretty keen on him to also.

Why quote my post if you have nothing to say about Smith?
Because everyone will be looking for and expecting another Barlow to pump into the tyres of your recruiters. Even Fremantle didn't rate Barlow ahead of hrichton, Bollenhagen and McPhee. The Dockers grabbed Barlow because Essendon selected Hardingham.
Nice dig at Ellard, btw.
Comment, not a dig.

Will be off our list like Luke Blackwell who had as much ability.

Or Brett Backwell.

Luke might actually get Rookie'd this year, so it can't be all bad.

And I didn't say anywhere that Smith could be the next Barlow. He played a good game in a final, showed some good speed and x-factor. I just wanted to know what his deal was.

Whether other clubs had an interest or whatnot.

Arrowsmith is a big game player. He shows it consistently, both at TAC level (winning BOG honors in the GF) and this weekend's 3 goal (should have been 4) haul, 20 disposal game.

Goal kicking midfielders are hard to come by, and he has shown the ability to push forward and play that medium forward role, but equally capable of winning ball and running lines. He is a 80 metre player.

He deserves another crack and a spot on an AFL list. Gives 100% every time I watch him play. Was played out of position in the WAFL and has really found his place with the Bullants this year.
