Won by a goal, but were hardly impressive at all from a side which had around 285 games of AFL experience in it.

Thought the backline played pretty well throughout the game particularly Callan, Hunt, Spencer & Lonergan. Others who impressed somewhat were Blake, Koula & Stokes I thought.

Mackie - Did some good things but were often cancelled out by poor kicking. Needs more desperation

Ablett - 2nds all season. Please don't entertain any thoughts of AFL this season for Nathan. He wasn't helped by our midfield or gameplan but he is still no where ready.

Steve Johnson - Kicked 4.2 or 4.3 I think, but still wasn't overly impressive but will probably be brought back anyways.

Harley - Played probably half a game, mostly in the middle and did pretty well.

Our style of play was just ridiculous. It consisted of bombing to ball long to McCarthy, Ablett & Grima who were always severely outnumbered with no crumbers in sight, absolutely ridiculous but we somehow pulled it out of the fire after a poor 3rd quarter.

Varcoe virtually played the last 10-15min of every quarter. Twas my first look at him and was very impressed. Looks to have good foot skills, pace to burn and is very desperate. Always chases hard, had a couple of smothers. Played really well when coming onto a wing in the 1st quarter, but then mainly spent time around half forward & in the pocket which didn't suit him as much.

Yeah, Varcoe also impressed me, I liked the goal he kicked.

Where did you see the goal from, I was behind those goals where he kicked it. Looked Aaron Davey esk. I think McCarthy or Nathan knocked it over to him. Great play.

I was so excited at the start of the game. I got there at the start of the 2nd quarter and went to the Wade Stand and I saw the two Abletts sitting together - God and Jesus. At one point Snr yelled out at S. Johno for some reason (had a go at him), but I couldn't make out what he said.

If anyone from the VFL to come back to the AFL, it'll probably be S. Johnson. He's still not playing a team game, but that's just how he is. 5 goals last week and 3 or 4 this week.

I liked Grima's goal in the last quarter, but other than that, he didn't do much. McCarthy took a few good grabs and a few goals and I only saw Nath kick the one goal in the last quarter from 50 out.

I was trying to sit on the side where we'd kick to because I wanted to see how the forwards were playing, so I didn't see much of the defenders. I think Spencer and Koula were out best down back.

That's my view and it was great to see a win.:thumbsu:

Exactly the same as last week then.

Agreed. Every second person will still call for his inclusion this week.

Steve Johnson - Kicked 4.2 or 4.3 I think, but still wasn't overly impressive but will probably be brought back anyways.

Keep him in the VFL for as long as it takes to get him motivated. It is the only way he is going to learn.

Callan should come back in for Slade this week then.

Disagree with you Unwritten Law. Steve Johnson kicked 5 today, did what he had to do. How many goals should he kick before he gets recalled? 10? or maybe at least 12? He was manning up and chasing when he had to, and also gave the ball off to others in the forward 50 in the last. He's done his time in the VFL, now time to be recalled.

Callan was good on the defensive side but time and time again turned the ball over after doing really well to win it. Not good enough at the moment. The seniors win the contested ball but are not doing enough with it, so the team doesn't need another player who'll do what Callan was doing today.

Nathan Ablett. Still learning, but for f's sake they have to start kicking the ball better to him. Exhibit one, first quarter: Shannon Byrnes runs off half back and has a bounce. NAblett leads and has a break on his opponent but Byrnes doesn't see it cos he decides to take another bounce and in the end kicks long to the forward line. From memory Frankston brought it out. Exhibit two, last quarter: Callan has ball at HF and Nablett leads with his opponent at least 5 metres behind but Callan kicks long to a pack. And even generally, there is a skill when it comes to kicking long to a one out forward, eg. kicking the long ball to your teammate's side of the contest etc. I agree the kid needs time in the VFL, but the delivery to him has to improve.

Hunt and Kelly are lucky that no one in the VFL played well enough to take their spots. Real lucky.

Goals are irrelevant.

I watched him kick 5.3 last week and his direct opponent in the second half was BOG.

People complain about him being lazy and disinterested in the seniors, applaud his dropping to the VFL, and then call for his immediate inclusion after he plays one quarter of lazy football in the two's.

He was manning up and chasing when he had to, and also gave the ball off to others in the forward 50 in the last

Now that is what I want to hear. He refused to do that last week. I still think he should be given another week and 4 quarters of solid commitment before he is recalled. Yes, he is a mile above VFL football but without the correct approach the circle of AFL/Mediocrity/VFL Superstar/AFL/Mediocrity/VFL superstar continues to turn. He needs to prove his head is where it should be and not just in one game.

Could Callan and Koula be the ones to take their spots? What about Harley - did he look fit enough to come in yet?

Callan no, turned the ball over too much/kicked too ineffectively. Callan's performance today was good, ie. he did the hard work and won the ball but let himself down with his disposal.

Koula was ok but not dominant enough to deserve a promotion. That's why Hunt and Kelly are so lucky atm.

Harley did some good things, had good presence, but he isn't match fit and if he's promoted then he, King and Playfair will all be underdone. Don't think he'll come back yet, maybe one or two more weeks.

If Callan was dropped ahead of Slade after the Sydney match, Slade won't be dropped for Callan this week. I thought Slade was pretty good against the Dees.

Good to see Harley back on a park, and i'd like to see SJ back in the 1's just incase he does something great because we know he can.

Was a shocking match today. I thinl you will find King and Harley in because they are pannicking, out Egan and Gardiner... Would like to see Stokes play, good both sides, quick, hard tackler and better than Byrnes maybe for Slade?

Nah I don't think Brynesy would come in for Sladey. Will is a defender and Brynesy is more an attacker. I think if Sladey was dropped it would be Callan to come in. Like Ricketts said, I don't think Slade will be dropped. He didn't have a whole lot of game time last week but I think he is a good tough player for the cats and we need that to play against the Saints.

On the GFC website the article says Cook: No panic Well I think that Geelong need to panic! Time is running out. Something drastic needs to happen if we are going to win a game especially in the next 2 weeks.

Callan for Slade IMO

Anyone for Slade, as long as Gardiner goes with him. The sad thing is I would love to drop James Kelly - send a loud message through that waltzing around in the seniors isn't good enough. Why not reward Stokes, he seems to be in good touch. Callan can't be any worse than Slade, and won't give as many free kicks away.

We need a couple more talls in the team. Bring in Spencer and possibly Ablett I say.

No point bringing in smaller running players that we have plenty of stocks of.
