Is he a chance for round 1? His NAB Cup form, so far, seems solid. For those that saw either the lightening carnival or the Adelaide game is he ahead of the likes of Schammer? Comments please.

didnt see the game, but i have seen him train, has skill, speed and composure, i wouldnt be suprised if he did play round one, especially with the injury list we have. i think we picked another good one there :thumbsu:

Light years ahead of tequila - played a couple of different roles in the opening games and didn't look out of place. Kept his composure in traffic and had good disposal efficiency. I'd be suprised if he doesn't get a gig early.

I'll be surprised if he plays round one. Shows plenty of potential but there's only 3 or 4 players below Schammer in the batting order and there would be 25 guys ahead of Michie at present.

Ok so assuming we have 10-12 players coming back into Round 1, that would mean we need 10-12 players to fill out a bench and he was easily inside the top 10 players on the weekend. One of the rare players who could hit a target, while under pressure. Unlike some who couldn't hit a target while not under pressure.

I know Barlow was his mentoring buddy when he first came over from Vic. I am hoping Mick advised him of the quietly quietly approach which he took when he came to the club. In that I mean he let his footy do the talking.

Don't go expecting him to be some midfield revelation this year. Any debut will likely see him playing the Fyfe role - half forward and roaming outside the packs. Only spent a bit of time in at the centre bounces against Adelaide, and is definitely behind Crichton, Lower and Mzungu in that regard.

He'll play this season though, and everyone will realise how much of a steal we got.

Also would bet the house that he will play. Just can't see it being in R1.

He would have to have a better claim than Faulks, Grover, Silvagni, Duffield, McPharlin, Broughton, Mzungu, Hill, Palmer, McPhee, Sandilands, Mundy, de Boer, Pavlich, Fyfe, Ballantyne, Anthony, Mayne, Crowley, Suban, Roberton and Johnson. I can't see him surplanting any of these players.

He will also then be up against returners in Barlow, Ibbotson and Hayden. I have him on the next line with van Berlo, Walters, Lower, Bradley and Crichton as very probable and credible fill ins for injury/form loss.

I would agree with this but
a) Not sure if Grover, Faulks, Silvagni and McPharlin will play in the same team so maybe a spot there early on at least. Griffen/Clarke may come in but may also just be the sub.

b) Question marks over Hill and Ballantyne early days as well so may miss round 1. Walters, Lower probably still marginally ahead of him to replace these guys though.

Have not seen him train but the reports on BF sound good.

It'd be nice to see him play in round 1 but I'm having a hard time trying to fit him in.

Everyone needs to settle down a little bit in regards to the injury list. It hasn't really changed since Morabito went down at the start of December but everyone is freaking out over it.

Ballantyne and Hill will play in round 1.

Houghton wouldn't be considered best 22.

Ruffles and Sibosado are both rookies.

Ibbotson might miss the first couple, but HB's are hardly in short supply at Fremantle. Given he completed 90% of the pre-season he shouldn't take too long to get back up to speed either.

Take a look at the team that beat Hawthorn in the elimination final last year. Add any combination of Palmer, Ballantyne, Mzungu, Anthony, Clarke, Bollenhagen, Michie and Bradley to replace the 3 players who are missing (Hayden, Ibbotson and Morabito) and IMO we'd still win that game.

Like I said, I just think everyone needs to calm down. The injury list is improving as the season draws closer, not getting worse.

For me it's not so much the injuries as the interrupted preps. In this way you could add Ballantyne, Hill, De Boer, Walters, Roberton and to a lesser extent Mundy and Fyfe to that list (although the last two could just have missed trainings due to tapering programs and illness). Interrupted preseasons seem to really hurt player output these days.

But I think these concerns will be dismissed in the next couple of weeks as the club ramps up preparations for the season proper and these players get a couple of preseason games under their belts. Here's hoping most of them are selected this weekend*.

* Walters of course played his first game last week but typically needs a lot of work to get his match fitness up to requirements.

yep, this is the way i feel. on top of that, last year we were most successful when we had micky b playing centreman, when he went down, we started losing. well we arent going to have him, or atleast a fully flying mick barlow untill atleast round 16 i wouldnt have thought.... he is such an integral cog in the freo machine.

Absolutely. Micky B is crucial - he's the only goal kicking ball magnet we've had for years (except maybe Palmer in 2008. I don't count Hase on account of his dodgy back). I've got all fingers and toes crossed that he might actually get back to 90% by round 10 and onwards from there.

Hopefully his absence can be offset by Rhys getting back to his 2008 form. Plus more midfield time for Broughton, the injection of Mzungu and even Lower who could surprise a few people by being that hard in and under player we often lack. Lower also seems to be a player who easily finds a lot of the pill.

Someone needs to step up to take the load and extra attention away from Mundy and Hill until Barlow's back in full flight.
