votes from the media. Do They have any idea ?

I was looking at votes from the Essendon/Hawthorn Game and an Age writer gave Sam Mitchell 4th best player on the ground.

Votes should be given for influence on a game and not merely stattistics.

And I think Mitchell got 14 possessions for the game and was soundly beaten by Welsh.

And Palmer got votes from the Brisbane/Fremantle Game.

Collect thirty possessions and nearly all were rubbish.

What a joke !

Does the media have any understanding about football ?

welsh did a great job & should maybe take up a tagging role in the midfield each game.. mitchell played half the game he usually does.

Mitchell wasn't 4th best player on the ground.

Palmer was awesome and definately deserved votes.

You contradict yourself in your post. You say that votes should be given for a players influence on a game and not merely his statistics. Palmer's influence on the game cannot be understated. His endevour and attack on the ball was second to none. His courage should have inspired his team and he still kept pushing even after he was absolutely spent.

I haven't contradicted myself.

I look at a players influence on the game when giving votes.

The fact is Buddy Franklin had only 18 possessions but was clearly BOG.

Hodge didn't have big numbers but had a big influence in the result of the game.

Mitchell had no influence on Saturday night.

In relation to Palmer he cant kick over a jam tin, which is exacerbated when he is under pressure. He had little influence over the result.

As an example, Simon Black had a similar number of possessions to Palmer but was far more influential.

Luke McPharland didn't have many possessions but he ' towelled up' Bradshaw in the first half and then quelled Jonathon Brown ( BOG in the first half ) in the second half. McPharland comprehensively defeated two of the inform Power forwards in one game.

He had influence.

Another example from the Essendon/Hawthorn game. I gave Welsh two votes because he quelled Mitchell, who along with Hodge are the 2 midfield generals for Hawthorn.

He had an influence on the margin. It is not his fault that he is basically leading the club in his first season and they do not know how to win. He was definately one of the best players out there and i won't be surprised if he get's a brownlow vote.

I agree with you re: Mitchell.

Palmer had an influence on the margin.

He turned the ball over so much that Brisbane rebounded to score girls.

I am yet to see such a highly rated player have such poor disposal.

bloody hell, i thought welsh may of sneaked 1 for the job he did..Awesome inside mids have killed us for years, if i recall Mitchell has polled at least 2 Brownlow votes in each of our last 4 encounters.

Votes for me

Franklin - 5
Hodge - 4
Bateman - 3
Welsh - 2
Spike/Lewis - 1

You're seriously delusional mate. Palmer is a superstar for that club already and he was almost Freo's best.

His disposal ain't that bad, i would compare it with Stanton.

Yes, I watched the game from my abode in Hong Kong.

Seriously, McPharland, Mitchell Johnston, Ibbotson and Sandilands were better players than Palmer.

The Essendon board is full of posts bemoaning Essendon's poor skill and thre media always talks about skills and turnovers, but yet the media give Palmer votes, whilst acknowledging his skill level was deficient during the TV telecast and in post match reports.

I dont understand it !

Lets look at this issue another way.

1992 GF Geelong VS West Coast

Matera and Bairstow played on each other on the centre wing.

Matera 18 possessions and 4 goals.
Bairstow 19 possessions and 0 girls.

Who had the greatest influence on the game ?

Firstly i can't understand why you even give a rats ass what the media think but each to their own.

I watched the game from the first bounce to the last and Palmer was excellent and his disposal was not as bad as what you are making out.

Either way, i don't care as he is a Freo player not a Bomber.

I'd be pissed off if I were a Brisbane fan. What are they doing scoring girls, when there's a game of footy to be played?

I would love to know how many of Palmers turnovers were actually quick kicks out of packs in an attempt to push the ball forward.

A couple of his goal kicking attempts were not up to scratch but his general field kicking wasn't too bad.

FWIW i totally agree with you in that i don't understand why the OP would even mention Palmer in the first place.
